I put together and ran a SN2 reaction with three nucleophiles at once to confirm that iodine would be the best nucleophile
1-heptanol + Nacl, NaBr, NaI ---(conc H3PO4)--> 1-chloroheptane + 1-bromoheptane + 1-iodoheptane + H2O
My GCMS results confirmed this. I had two major peaks,1-iodoheptane and leftover 1-heptanol. I calculated there was a 1:1 ratio of 1-iodoheptane and 1-heptanol. The peaks for the other two products were so small they hardly showed up.
Now I want to balance the final equation. I got 3 1-heptanol and 3 H2O, but I don't know if this is correct. What about the 1:1 ratio between 1-heptanol and 1-iodoheptane? Does that matter in the final balanced equation? Did I just do this wrong? haha
Any explanations or tips would be greatly appreciated.
