But that's just it...a large majority of threads that get migrated to P&S are ridiculous. It's easy to conjure up a load of nonsense, with no science backing it up (hence there's so much of it). For the most part, it's an exercise in critical thinking, e.g when somebody proposes some flaw in relativity, and it's up to the respondents to give constructive feedback. On occasion, you do get the 'is it possible that' type of questions, and the poster has the sense to know they're speculating, and have no qualms posting in that section. If the person is not willing to accept that their idea isn't speculative or pseudo-scientific, that's their problem. Personally, I think a large number of threads that get moved to P&S, should be moved to the official jokes section. You'll get the same retorts, whatever you name it...'my life's work, moved to a science fiction forum...what is this !?!' It is a shame, that there's so much drivel that finds it's way into P&S, and not speculation that has, at least, a level of rigor behind the arguments, which could include a mathematical model for instance.

However, you're probably right, and the UK do refuse entry for more peculiar reasons. Errr, I also mentioned this law earlier, and neither I nor Klaynos stated if we agreed or disagreed with it. Paranoia wanted clarification of how the UK could legally impose this decision, and on retrospect, it seems pretty obvious that it's tied with the Incitement to Racial Hatred Act. I mentioned the revised act of 2006, when somebody mentioned Savage's views on Islam. We're just confused as to how this can be imposed, if somebody might incite hatred on entering a country, rather than has incited hatred in that country. Which terrorist attacks are you referring to? If somebody wants to orchestrate an attack, a flood of people into the country isn't going to make the slightest bit of difference...case in point, the London bombings of 2005 were carried out by British Nationals. This also has little, if nothing to do with the discussion.

I voted other because, although we've discussed getting rid of our landline, the customer service, <cough> Virgin <cough> is so horrendous, that we fear we may have our broadband downgraded or some other hiccup may occur if we attempt to get rid of our landline. Plus we're charged for contacting customer service, at one time my housemate was on the phone for nearly an hour and a half ! The only people we contact (landline to landline) I think, are our close family. It is far cheaper that way, but more often than not, we will phone mobiles (cell phones) from the landline, if we're low on credit (so it's just laziness) and end up with a reasonably hefty bill at the end of the month. The main motivation for cutting the landline, was that (after asking) we still don't get itemized bills, and we're rubbish at keeping a record of who we phoned, and for how long et.c So, we just wanted to ditch it. IIRC, we did try to get disconnected, but alas, it's still connected, and tempting us to use it, rather than go to the shop and top up a mobile. (none of us are on contracts.)

I'm assuming in this case, it comes under the Racial and Religious Hatred Act. However, surely he has to incite hatred within the UK, and then face deportation...as mentioned earlier. I'm not entirely sure how the act works in this instance (presuming I'm correct.) I honestly don't know enough about Savage, to know what prompted the decision (or have time to research it.)

Unfortunately, I'm getting over sized thumb nails, when I try to embed the images. I've tried uploading the pictures in different formats, size et.c, but they're still producing thumb nails when I try to stick them on SFN...what am I doing wrong ?

On a related note. My attachment folder is nearly full, and I don't want to delete the images that I have stored...yet, so I tried starting a thread last night, to share some pics from imageshack. However I couldn't get the links to work. Initially I just used the code the images come with, for message boards, but I just got a small box appear, with no image when I previewed the post. I tried a few other alternatives (where I can't remember exactly, what I tried) but they failed as well e.g I got a link to the image, rather than the image itself. What's the right method for imbedding pictures into a post, via a url that I'm missing...specifically for imageshack (if that makes a difference.) I did a quick scan of the FAQ's, the BB code list et.c so maybe I just missed something obvious...any ideas ?

Gutz's suggestion was actually suggested by our vet, when our cat injured his leg after a fight with nextdoor neighbours cat. The nextdoor neighbours cat, lay claim to our back garden as territory before we got our cat, and it's persistence to keep coming into the garden, means our cat is getting so stressed, it's licking the fur off his legs. However, the flaw in a super soaker is obviously you have to be there when the cat is doing it's business. My parents have one of these for their pond, and it works a treat. It sounds like there's no reasoning with your neighbours waitforufo, so the appliance of science seems the only way forward. I think your actions were justified, you made them aware of the problem, the cat is their responsibility, and they didn't take any steps to remedy the problem. The fact that the problem was persistent, despite you being reasonable (although we do only have your side of the story) then more drastic measures had to be taken.

Why would that be then, because it's a perfectly good example ? The use of negatives in physics, in the most part, is for describing relative quantities, i.e if we picked an origin to start modelling the motion of a particle, and it passed back through the origin in the opposite direction it came (assuming it was a straight line for simplicity), that will be a negative quantity. Negative and positive charge is just convention, relative to the proton, an electron does have negative charge. What AO2012 is asking, is if the converse of a black hole, is a big bang. You can't apply Newtons 3rd Law in these situations, but it's certainly not a stupid assumption. You may want to grab a copy of 'Life of the Cosmos', as a similar idea was proposed back in the 90's by Lee Smolin aka the Fecund Universe approach. It's quite an old book (by pop sci standards) plus this has been discussed quite a bit, so use the search function. I havn't been following this field much at all recently, so maybe hunt around to see if there's anything more recent out there.

You can't directly observe Dark Toast, but I've managed to detect it's presence, via an elaborate piece of equipment, that I've spent many years developing. It's roughly the size of a two story house, but I think, in years to come, owing to the rapid advances in modern technology, that my 'smoke alarm' will be the size of a shoe box. Well if you have personal experience of this, then it's anecdotal, and therefore you certainly can't apply that to the entire scientific community. Also please try to not veer this into a religious discussion, chances are this thread will get locked, but this certainly has nothing to do with keeping an open mind about such things. Well luckily that's just your opinion, but anyone who questions the validity of something, because they fear it's smarter than them, is being an idiot. The validity of alien spacecraft will come under the same rigor as anything else accepted in science, hard evidence.
