  1. It's a really horrible documentary because it eludes that the LHC will answer a 'theory of everything' which simply isn't the case. The narration says one thing, and is completely contradicted by some of the interviews. There's a young physicist on the programme who can't even remember the fundamental particles and forces...rubbish.
  2. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't and I'm living testament to that I completely agree with Atheists post...it's a learning experience for 'everyone' on here. You answer a question, you're almost guaranteed to remember it, and if you're corrected the same applies. And lack of education is 'not' lack of of intelligence. There's no harm in asking what you may seem is a stupid question. If you're in an interview for an academic career for example, the following will not happen... 'Well Mr Smythe, we would offer you the job, but unfortunately you said something incredibly stupid on a science forum' It really doesn't matter.
  3. I was procrastinating...but the axolotl AFAIK isn't in larvae stage, like a larval tiger salamander, which are. They do metamorphose to a salamander if there are dry conditions.
  4. Funnily enough I used to own an axolotl called 'Henry', *her diet was mainly chicken heart, and they have the strange behaviour of eating each other, through competition...chunks from a leg et.c. I have no idea of the mechanics behind the regrowth of limbs, but axolotls have caused much activity in the study of stem cells. *My axolotl was female, but I was eight and wanted a male
  5. How did you find that out ? Nevermore, as YT said it's impossible to work out until you set it up, due to location. A friend of mine (this was many years ago) used to record at home, and then stick a DAT player in a tree with a mini-transmitter...you could pick up signals on the south downs (higher altitude) but it was nonexistent in town. Out of interest, is this for audio or video ?

They died when fashion was reborn...the end of the eighties Pensions and specifically pensions are threatened globally, but I think you'll find the situation in the UK 'is' more severe. And I agree, it was poor judgement on our future PM's part, that corporate businesses would be generous with their subsidies on pensions. However, these are profit for profit companies, and it doesn't take a genius to realise their rationale means they are forced into a position, whether you agree with that ethic or not. It's a tough one, but I can't say I'm a fan of Gordon Brown...I still think it was shoddy reasoning, whether there was a global influence or not to the pension crisis, taxation on output and reward doesn't make sense to me, it doesn't create revenue or interest for the sub-populations which are not at work, least of all revenue from the working population. I might be missing something, but I'm not impressed...maybe you know something I've overlooked.
  7. That sounds like something he would say I think it's due to the fact we don't have many degree level math questions / students on here...their predominantly high school / GCSE level. So I think it's a little harsh basing the problem on intelligence.
  8. Unfortunately for Atomicpsycho, he wasn't aware of Ctrl C, Ctrl V Now do us all a favour and go outside and play.
  9. abskebabs, sorry for going off topic, just wondered what course you were studying...I know it's a physics course, but who's it through ?
  10. It is needed, I've refrained from a few questions due to lack of response, but I think the number of maths experts that are regularly active on here, are few and far between. There's a few that spring to mind, but I think if there's an expert handling questions (regularly) in the maths forum, it will keep the forum more active. I realize it's not that easy, but give someone status, and they may feel obliged...just my humble opinion.
  11. That's poor, sorry for staying off topic, but the gripe I have with ADHD is that it describes normal to disorderly behavior in children. It's perfectly natural for children to find school work boring, to fidget and not pay attention, this can even be through peer pressure where it's not cool to do well in class. Rather than changing teaching methods, or tackling learning difficulties on an individual basis, and/or trying to find the source of the problem, drugs such as Ritalin are administered. Ritalin is administered for hyperactivity, aggressive behavior, lethargy, it goes on and on. I realize ADHD has been discussed to death, I was talking with my parents a few days ago about ADHD, and my Mum (ex teacher) described a range of symptoms that were treated with Ritalin, that were at such far ends of the spectrum (including what appeared to be bi-polar) I was amazed she thought ADHD was a true condition...I'm deeply skeptical. Sorry again for staying off topic.
  12. Or perhaps a 'name and shame' tactic is in order...you know who you are, what harm can it do, and think of the warm fuzzy feeling you'll be giving to certain people on SFN, as their efforts have been recognised.
  13. Ummm, are you addressing me or Nickt...this thread was raised roughly 2 years ago. Would a friendly mod please delete my response to YT, although I was grateful, it's utterly cringe making
  14. Are there any other alternatives or developments concerning MOND, I'll try and find a link, but I swear I read that the modification was a little ad hoc i.e it's only applicable for large systems, and breaks down when applied to smaller systems (e.g our solar system.) I'm wondering if the 2nd law needs a radical revision, or a whole new set of equations where the 2nd law only becomes applicable to smaller systems...if that makes sense. My physics is a little rusty by the way. EDIT: sorry if this is a little off topic.
  15. Indeed, over a week in, and only eight members have nominated...pretty feeble. Perhaps it's a really tough decision for most, or maybe a little gentle persuasion is in order...GET NOMINATING DAMMIT !!! Incase of lack of response...I tried.

No need, and note I didn't say I supported the Tories. The pension crisis was 'not' Tory spin, this Guardian article sums it up...
  17. I'm surprised your specialist is brushing your ear condition off as tinnitus if the problem has become more aggressive...as with most medical advice on here the best thing is to go see your doctor, especially as you have only one ear, I'd get that sorted asap. The circumstances as to why high frequencies have been muted are clearly different, so I can't say the symptons will eventually go, as they did with me, perhaps you should see a different specialist ? Just to add, I was suffering with concussion with my last post, clearly heavy blows to the head turns me into one cheezey git.

The taxation on small businesses is a joke IMO, and don't even get me started on pensions...a topic that's really hit home, as my Mum is recently retired and my Dad can't retire. The UK is awaiting a change, whether the Tories will deliver is questionable.
  20. Right, thanks YT, at least I'm not the only one. I've obviously told my friends about this, and they thought it was rather bizarre, I just took it as I'm easily excited...but I'll look up stress hormones.
  21. Well, I've had this for several years now, possibly longer...and I wondered if this is actually a condition. It doesn't really bother me, but if there's a particular event or something I'm looking forward to i.e getting home from work on a Friday and looking forward to a few beers with friends, I feel physically sick. I've been known to get home on a Friday, and rush to the toilet and vomit, just out of pure excitement. If I'm leaving work and I know I'm off abroad somewhere, or off to a festival, it's really bad...and I can feel nauseas for up to a day, have no appetite et.c Am I just too easily excitable, or is there something else going on here ? Obviously it's natural to get butterflies in your stomach when your anticipating a long awaited event, but not to the point that you have to be sick. EDIT: Just to add, this happens a lot...practically every week.
  22. I've noticed that the IRC 'who's online' on the main forum index, doesn't seem to change...or at least not recently. Just wondered if anybody was aware of this ?
  23. Oops, I meant hitamines attack...i.e a defense mechanism, sorry rushed post. Interesting, so an allergy (or in this instance hay fever) could be a combination of a rapid change in environment (increase in hygiene) i.e rapid relative to any evolutionary change, and a heavy exposure to a substance (in this case pollen) that promotes that same reaction, even at lower levels. I wonder if there's a correlation here...I know the farming of rape seed (in the UK anyway) has risen dramatically, just as an example. But, I'm probably jumping the gun a little here.
  24. I'm not sure if this is confirmed, but isn't the rise in hay fever due to cleaner living, where way back when, most people carried parasites and this balanced (for want of a better word) the immune system...take away the parasites and the immune system is over active, and attacks histamines. Somebody correct me if this is wrong though.
  25. Hmmm, the plot thickens. After trying to whittle down the likely suspect to a ginger bloke called Dave, I thought my detective work was complete. However I found out a couple of days ago that he was merely playing along when I sent the jovial prankster a message, simply stating 'knickers', but apparently he had no idea what I was going on about. Watch this space for more knickers shenanigans.
