  1. Absolutely, I cook pasta and tomatoes alot just because it's so versatile, and there's so many ingredients you can add that work...in fact I'm having minced lamb with pasta tonight. I can't believe I missed garlic out of my recipe earlier, utterly essential. Mmmm, I melt cheese on the top, have you ever tried a tuna melt (usually in a baguette) damn they're good. /me grabs a mop to clean up all the saliva. If anybodies wondering about the title of the thread, there's a programme in the UK, called Can't Cook, Won't Cook where people who never cook compete, with the help of a celebrity chef. Watching cookery programmes just before you about to prepare a meal is great IMO.
  2. Telecommunications, defense, energy (as in nuclear energy, electricity et.c) finance and economics, space missions...a friend of mine works on satellite communication or something similar, havn't seen him in ages.
  3. Doh, sorry Paranoia, I forgot to stick 'being' on the end...which screwed my argument up a bit. But again it's just a matter of definition...if one of my relatives ashes were on the mantle piece, I'd refer to the ashes as 'my great grandad' for example, if somebody found the ashes scattered on the ground, without prior knowledge of the source, they'd refer to them as ashes and nothing more. My point being (no pun intended) is we humanize pre and post human stages, but it has to be a specific stage in development to say, that's a human being. I think it's important to make such distinctions, especially on topics such as abortion et.c
  4. Of course not, your vulture food...remember we 'know' your brain has been removed so we know you have no feeling capacity whatsoever, the only reaction to stimulus you'll have is decomposition through exposure to oxygen. Now, although you keep denying it, you 'are' arguing the potential of an organism, we don't 'know' what's going to happen tomorrow, so if an embryo has the potential to become human, or has the potential to die we can't tell so they end up cancelling each other out. Until the fetus has developed into a living, breathing human...and we know it's human, due to it's unique reactions to stimulus, and displaying behaviours such as communication et.c, then and only then is it human. Not when it's a fetus, not when it's a corpse.
  5. Ecoli, the article seems to of dissapeared from wiki, here's a link from answers.com... http://www.answers.com/topic/gochujang Did you also make the paste yourself, it sounds very, very good indeed, though anything with chili rocks IMO. I must admit I havn't tried much Korean food, I'll be on the lookout for it in future. Great responses so far, certainly more exotic than my humble dish...keep 'em coming. Think I may do a detour to the supermarket on the way home tonight.
  6. Gutz has got the meatball rolling (sorry), so heres my simple recipe that makes me suitably salivate... You will need : Pasta of your choice 3 rashes of lean bacon Half a courgette Red Pepper A can of cheap tomatoes (not stodgy Napolina...need to be watery) Tomatoe puree Vegetable gravy Dried Rosemary Fresh Basil A cheese of your choice for topping Pepper Extra Virgin Olive Oil Boil some water in a saucepan, add Pasta and simmer. Dice the courgette and red pepper, or chop into thin slices, then place the bacon under a moderately heated grill. Dribble some olive oil into another saucepan, and pour in the can of tomoatoes, and rosemary...heat gently. Bacon should be cooked now, so remove from grill, chop into bits (I use scissors for this) and add to the tomatoes, then stir in the vegetable gravy until you get a thick sauce...turn heat right down, then stir in the red pepper, courgette and basil. When pasta is cooked, drain water and remove from saucepan. Put a little oil in the same saucepan, retain heat on the hob, then add pasta and a bit of a pepper and stir quickly. Stick pasta on a plate, pour on the sauce, then grate the cheese over the top, sprinkle on some pepper, and place under a moderate grill until cheese has melted. Not incredibly exotic or difficult, but it's similar to something my Mum used to make, I just made a few additions. EDIT: thanks for the link YT !
  7. If you have any of your 'own' culinary delights to share, post them here. I know for a fact there's some budding chefs on SFN, so if you have any special recipes you've conjured up, however simple, it would be great to hear about them. I'll post a recipe soon, bit busy at the moment.
  8. Ok, thanks. I realise it certainly isn't full proof, and when probability is thrown into the mix as well (with regards to Gildeds statement), I was just wondering if the process needs to be revamped in some way...but like you said, best to let peer-review take it's course.
  9. Is there the possibility that natural systems could effect decay rate, I was just wondering if decay rate isn't constant under certain conditions...it would effect the results of radiometric dating ?
  10. Helioseismology has taken another step, and could have benefits for communications and future space missions. I watched an interview on BBC breakfast whilst having a day off work, the UK involvement was why it was mentioned, very interesting, please see the BBC article below... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/5217080.stm
  11. Well I'm not sure about the US, but in the UK I find it cheaper to eat healthy food, than unhealthy food if I'm cooking for myself. Buying produce in a supermarket is a hell of a lot cheaper than eating at McDonalds everyday. For the price of a steak, I could get a large bag of pasta, a few cans of tomatoes, basil, prepared salad, and some low fat cheese...I think if people are going to use the price argument, then they should get off their butts and learn to cook, I really don't see it as a good excuse.
  12. Wouldn't large masses put a stop to that i.e a tsunami on earth will have no effect on the gravitational pull of the Sun...with chaos theory, shouldn't large masses be associated with cause. Chaos theory, relativity and now newtonian mechanics, sorry about that. I realise that a chain of events could stem from a small action, I just think there is a limit. You can only really apply it to small systems, which seems a bit meaningless with what chaos theory wants to imply.

    Red Savina

Well we have some hydroponics equipment lying around in the garage, but it is only one small plant, so I'll keep it going and wait till next year...if I decide to buy some more chili plants, I'll set the equipment up. Thanks for the advice.

    Red Savina

b*gger, it was a late b'day present...and the weather has only just started getting cooler, pitiful timing...ho hum.

    Red Savina

Couldn't find anything through google (that specifically answers this) for some reason, very simple question, my red savina chili plant has been flowering for nearly two weeks now, does anybody know when it'll start bearing chilies...yes, I'm being impatient.
  16. Behold... http://www.seedmagazine.com/news/2006/03/prime_numbers_get_hitched.php?page=all&p=y
  17. I actually thought the recent downtime was due to some changes being made i.e philosophy forum et.c, nevermind, I'm sure it'll be worth the wait.
  18. Well hurrah and huzzah, the cold sweats and shakes have finally ceased
  19. I'm common as muck with A RH +, AB negative means you can receive any negative blood group including O IIRC, but O used to be considered a universal blood group for donation, so that's probably changed. I'm not sure what's not to trust if you're giving blood, what do you think they're going to do...bleed you dry ?
  20. I can't vouch for all message boards...but generally it's a place for like-minded people to chat, debate and 'learn'. The latter, especially true of SFN. In fact, if it wasn't for me joining SFN last year and being inspired by some of the people I've chatted to, I would not be studying towards a degree in physics. SFN has helped me immensely, and I thank anyone who has helped putting me on the right track...it's also been a pleasure sharing what small amount of knowledge I have to others and getting feedback (Paranoia I promise to send you some links for origins of life...and Gutz I will post more on the Quarks / Leptons thread, been quite ill the last week.) So as cheezey as it sounds, SFN has shaped my life, and given me direction towards the goal I was seeking as a kid. So to anyone that's shared their knowledge with me, I'm incredibly grateful.
  21. Yeah, but thanks for clarifying anyway, I was only half way through the post...if Gutz is interested in the rest, I'll carry on.
  22. Right, around 5 x 10-44 seconds after the big bang, the universe reached the planck epoch, very hot, very dense...light could travel a mere 10-35 m at this time (planck length) travelling at 3 x 10^8 m s-1, and the mean energy per particle was 10^19 GeV...so time, size and energy are all proportional with each other. To put things in perspective, an atomic nucleus is roughly 10-14 m, so the planck length compared to an atomic nucleus, is the equivalent of an atomic nucleus compared to the earth ! Around this time gravity became distinct from the other 3 forces (the strong and weak nuclear forces, and electromagnetism.) So a theory of quantum gravity is needed to understand gravity at this time. It's thought matter and anti-matter were spontaneously being created from energy (photons) so... photons<--->particle + anti-particle. Where two photons are produced when matter and anti matter annihilate. A theoretical particle (X Boson) was responsible for converting quarks to leptons and vice versa at this time. So the X Boson, is the quanta of what is know as the grand unified theory (unification of the strong and weak interactions, and electromagnetism) though unified really means that the forces are not distinct from one another. All flavours of quark/anti-quark and lepton/anti-lepton were created at this time, where the matter or anti-matter X boson could decay into either matter or anti-matter particles. Roughly 10-36s after the planck time, the strong and electroweak forces became distinct (electroweak being the weak nuclear force and electromagnetism being combined or really non-distinct...the Higgs boson is thought to be particle that unifies (for want of a better word) these two processes) The universe had expanded and so cooled down to 10^28 Kelvins...think of it as a gas, when it's condensed more collisions, more energy, as it expands the mean energy drops. In fact between this time and 10-32 s, the so-called inflation period caused rapid expansion, which explains the size of the universe today. The 'desert' period came after this, where no new processes arose until about 10-11s...Gutz I've just realised I have to be somewhere, but I'll carry on late this evening.
  23. Paranoia, if you don't mind waiting till tomorrow, my work is in a heap in my bedroom, and I've already started celebrating the start of the weekend.
  24. They tested these teen repellents in Britain, shops that were regularly vandalised et.c I think the two examples are separate...a sound that causes discomfort, compared to a sound that distracts, irritates. My Dad used to be a security engineer, and one of the sirens used with the alarm at my parents house (it had a special name...can't remember off hand) was at such high amplitude and at such a specific frequency, that it was actually unbearable for anybody downstairs...believe me, I've heard it, and it was a real struggle to think straight even to press a couple of buttons to turn it off. I'm not talking about extreme amplitudes and frequencies (despite my comment on scratching a blackboard), but thanks for the link...nice hat !
  25. Hold that thought, but I'll promise I'll post you an order of events tomorrow sometime...just had a beer, and my essay is strewn about my bedroom somewhere. I won't be able to do it from memory without making the odd mistake or three.
