What happens to photons when producing latent heat...they get absorbed, the kinetic energy stops rising, the bonds break to change state...then what. What happens to the photons after this point, or do they literally get fizzled out when breaking the bonds, or do they eventually get released through some other means ??

Didn't think of that...you may find students that wear black socks do better in exams, than ones that wear navy blue.

Thanks for the response Ryan J. So if the Sun is getting hotter because it's fusing hydrogen from it's own reserves, is it safe to say that the Sun is not gaining luminosity through obtaining energy externally...pulling in matter from space. Again sorry if this seems obvious...it just struck me as odd at first...that it gets hotter, then cooler.

I've just been learning solar radiation distribution and it's effects on our environment (as infrared transfers) however it stated the solar luminosity is 70% 4600 Ma ago to what it is now. I guess that a lot of energy is being absorbed due to the strong gravititational field of the Sun, but why doesn't it just keep gaining energy. Is it due to the half-life of the Sun's core...I'm really not up on nuclear reactions et.c so that might be nonsense, but what kick's starts the energy depletion to warrant the demise of our Sun into a white dwarf...why is it that it's gaining energy to sustain itself, and then the reverse happens ? Sorry if this seems a daft question.

I didn't say they couldn't - I was just throwing some ideas in response to the findings YT2095 had heard about. There's obviously something in it...I'm confused as much as anyone, as to why smokers would achieve better results.

I accessed it just fine this morning (UK time) it looks like they're upgrading the site at the moment.

Thanks for the link Illuminati, this game is almost serene, very relaxing...good game to unwind. It's so simple as well, I'm going to have another bash at it tonight.

This seems quite odd, because the effects of nicotine last roughly half an hour. If the cravings set in (especially for heavy smokers) after this time, then surely there would be a lack of concentration. If you had to sit an exam for more than an hour, surely concentration would be effected. The only thing I can think, is that like caffeine, nicotine is a stimulant, and so possibly this extra alertness would help through the majority of a long exam. Or it's simply that smokers achieve better concentration whilst revising, and so increasing their chances when it comes to an exam.

Thought I got that wrong...thanks for the correction, I'll look it up.

Just to add, it was originally developed to aid in weight loss...not for psychiatric purposes.

No that's because it's an amphetamine based drug...nothing to do with emotional response. Ecstasy can make people feel aroused, it's just the physical side effects that can cause problems. Ecstasy or methylenedioxymethamphetamine (mdma) was first developed by a company called E-merck, and later a whole bunch of designer sisters of the drug were synthesized by Dr Shulgin. It was outlawed in the states in the mid eighties, and was even used in marriage counseling to increase empathy to squabbling partners. Apart from the flood of seratonin it inhibits, and noradrenaline as well as the release of dopamine it's distinct because it releases a neuro transmitter, called (I think) 5ht, but correct me if that's the wrong name. This is responsible for repetitive behaviour, as though you're stripped from curiosity, and could be the reason why people dance whilst under it's influence. Seratonin as well as oxytocin is released when you're in love, but I think the empathy side of mdma is still a mystery, as ther are many psychoactive substances that release seratonin that don't display this effect. Seratonin levels can fall dramatically if mdma is used, and can lead to depression, and has been blamed for a number of suicides.

Estonian folk music rocks ! Can't believe I soiled my pants the other day...at least it was on the train to work. So does SFN stand for 'Stupid Fundamentalist's Network'. I was going to take that pottery course, but quantum mechanics is soooo much easier.

That's odd...I've had a referral for a few months, but I have no idea who it is ?

now you mention it...

Everything has been thoroughly disinfected, and your right it is over...I was just curious I guess. I can't imagine an elderly person putting up with that. I'll take your carpet cleaning tip..thanks !

Do you have something against bacon and brie, or are you being serious. Because I'll chase it up if you are...the bloke at the deli's a pretentious toss pot as well, so it would be my pleasure to shop him for food poisoning. Thing is the illness went on for nearly a week...so I'm not convinced it was that.

On Saturday I went for a walk across the South Downs, just 2 minutes from where I live, we walked so far we decided not to turn back and walk back down and through a neighbouring town, I scraped the muck from my trainers (trying to make sure I didn't get any on my hands) with a stick and famished went to a deli to get a bacon and brie on ciabatta...mmm. 12 hours later I woke in my bedroom with the worst fever, and cramps I had since travelling, I rushed to the toilet...but was so delirious I collapsed off the toilet smacking my head on the sink and erm done my business on the floor, I was then violently sick...for some reason I decided to go back to my room because I was so ill I just had to lie down, I then done my business as I went through the door, and carried on being violently sick for the rest of the evening ( I actually thought I was going to die ) I slept for about half an hour woke to clean up, but was too ill do anything...it took me a couple of hours to muster myself to clean up (I really appreciate what nurses go through now.) Needless to say I heard 'Oh my GOD' from the first house mate who woke up. Unfortunately my entire house came down with the illness (probably due to the mess), so it was a good few days of a chorus of vomiting and such. The illness lasted just under a week. I really had no control of my bodily functions when the illness 'peaked.' Two questions... 1. I realised I had acute dysentery of some sort, but what strain could I pick up from the countryside that could make me so ill. 2. What can I use to kill the rest of the bacteria in my carpet with out something that's going to bleach or discolour the carpet...I can't seem to find a carpet shampoo that deals with parasitic human faeces stains. I've washed it thoroughy several times but I just need to be sure.

Server went down ? This is explains why I've been so ill for the last week, must of had withdrawal symptons.

Sorry for the late reply everyone...been pretty ill up until yestarday. What Gcol said makes sense, though I think their policy doesn't, and needs updating maybe. I'm going to talk to my house mates tonight and suggest we go on a water meter. This is what we were told we had in our last house, but Southern Water we're doing the usual monthly bill, as if we weren't using a meter. We had a letter a few days ago saying we were due an adjustment because we were paying too much. This is where I got the £10 extra from our last monthly bills from...well it's actually more, roughly £ 30 per month when living by the beach (this would of been the normal monthly charge) and now £ 46 a month, I think the bill will be reduced due to the adjustment from the last place...I guess it's up to our landlord if we can go on a meter, but we'll most certainly ask.

This is what I don't understand, why is it treated in the same way as council tax...it's water, you don't get charged more for using gas...you'd probably use more if you had a large house, but that's besides the point. Why and how are council tax and water rates connected ?

I presume they were going by the size...but that's equally irrational, unless they own the very clouds themselves, so I'll take your support, and take the matter further with the OFT.
