I could turn it into an ethics question by responding to the first quote. Like is it more ethical to marry than sleep with random people? But I don't think that's what the OP meant...

Funny... I thought he was talking about ydoaPs. I think ydoaPs is mostly right, but I don't think he should speak to people like that and think that a civil discourse of ideas will ensue.

IS GRAVITY ONLY A MANIFESTATION OF MAGNETISM?
A Tripolation replied to rigney's topic in Speculations
I believe in a supreme creator deity, yes. But that falls strictly out of the realm of what can and cannot be tested. If there was provided conclusive, factual, tangible evidence that God did not exist, I would cease to believe in him. However, when you make claims that science can test, and those tests show that your claim was false, then you have to accept that. Continuing to believe those claims isn't skepticism. It's dogma. -
IS GRAVITY ONLY A MANIFESTATION OF MAGNETISM?
A Tripolation replied to rigney's topic in Speculations
How can you question that which you truly do not understand? I do not understand even the basics of Quantum Mechanics, but I'm not going to question its place. I'll listen to the people who spend their lives researching it. If they say it's accurate, and hundreds of other scientists agree with them, I'll listen to them. -
IS GRAVITY ONLY A MANIFESTATION OF MAGNETISM?

An intimate understanding of mathematics is needed if you wish to understand the fundamental forces of nature. Then why are you asking? Swansont gave you a very good explanation as to why your assertion is false. -
Quantum Mechanics and Transcendental Medition

If you already have a strong opinion, then why ask about the science? You obviously just want to argue. -
Quantum Mechanics and Transcendental Medition
A Tripolation replied to Psycho1990's topic in Quantum Theory
Unfortunately, I watched it. How he goes from the four forces in the universe to a transcendental meditation, I'll never know. He talks about a unified source of everything, which I thought we were decades, at the very least, away from figuring out. It was word salad. -
At 0:32 is the only quote that you will ever need for any argument you may find yourself in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpNPw4H6_tU#

Just for the record, I do not subscribe to the belief I am about to answer with. Your acts of good are petty compared to an omnibenevolent God. You have still sinned. The only way into heaven is to accept that Jesus died for you, and that through Him, and Him only, can you ever be redeemed from the lake of fire, which is your rightful punishment for being a fallen human being. The soul thing is more because the Bible never says anything remotely close to soul power. Only the power of The Holy Spirit to help you overcome sin and temptation. Wordly judgments have nothing to do with it. The Bible, however, says that Mr Skeptic is spiritually dead. That's what I was referring to. It is considered the Word of God.

According to many verses in the NT, every soul is precious to God, and He loves every single one of them. Spirituality has nothing to do with it. It does not make you stronger. You are still a sinner, like every other human, according to Christianity. I don't see what weakness has to do with anything. Everyone is vulnerable to the same sin. The Pope is not a better, or worse, person than I am. Isaiah 64:6 - All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags. You are viewed as dead spiritually, as I'm sure you well know. Indeed. An apparent contradiction between being lost, and your salvation always remaining. I more think that the verses in the Bible that support this basically say that if you loved like this at one time in your life, your soul is pure. It doesn't matter if you got lost along the way. That's how I see it anyways. It's more in line with the NT.

Position, in mathematical terms, is [math]\overrightarrow{r}(t)[/math], at time t. It is usually a parametrized function. It corresponds to the displacement from the origin to your point. It itself is not a derivative, but it has two frequently used derivatives, the velocity and acceleration expressions. From these things, you can compute all sorts of interesting tangential and normal components, and the magnitude of the velocity derivative is the speed of the particle at time t. But it is off-topic somewhat.

Yes. There is a possibility that Satan was lying at that particular moment. I think that school of thought isn't as simple or elegant, though. Spiritual death is more commonly meant that your soul is tainted, and bound for eternal damnation. Though your interpretation is quite valid. Just speaking as a lifelong Christian. I don't understand quite what you're saying. I, along with quite a few theists, believe that the lake of fire is a very real place. Unlike most theists however, I do not think billions of people will be tossed into it. I don't think souls have power levels. I think that people have different will-powers, and ideologies. So yes, in a way, the immoral are far easier to lead astray than those with pure hearts.

Thanks. Being a physics major, your equation for kinetic energy was quite frightening. Can't say I've ever seen anything like that. The Newtonian Model works quite well for most everything laymen need, and his three laws form the basis for the fundamentals of structural engineering. Bridges are built using a Newtonian model, not a QM model. We know it's flawed. We saw that when modern physics came into existence. And we see that modern physics models have some discrepancies. I don't see how our incomplete models makes the math that we used to build them incorrect. And no, classical mechanics models do not need to account for time dilation. They need to account for forces in the x,y, and z directions. Modern physics models need to account for time dilation. And whaddya know. Look at that. They do.

You must have done something to anger the Gods of Fountain. They are quite simply the best writing implements in existence. You know it's awesome when your pen costs more than your laptop.

Maybe one time you got drunk off of a few bud-lights, were captured by an evil overlord with access to sumo wrestlers with M16s, a penchant for thought games, a door that was capable of killing anyone that passes through it, and its not-as-cool-as-the-death-door-twin, and escaped?

I dislike the Trent Reznor bandwagon. I'm not saying that you're a part of that, but there's something disturbing about listening to the same music as a 13-year old girl.

It seems to me that most advanced math is a form of, or heavily relies upon, differentiable geometry. Is this the case, or am I mistaken?

Apparently someone filmed me dancing to Ne-Yo's "Closer". Awesome. I see no way to avoid the inevitable extortion.

That'a an oversimplification. If you read Job, you'll see that Satan is convinced that humans only follow God because of the rewards. "Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.” The LORD said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.” Satan then attempts to break Job. It doesn't work. He wants to prove to God that His way of rule is wrong. Satan openly challenges God's rule many times throughout the Bible, in front of the host of Heaven. It is implied that he is moderately successful in planting doubts in some of the angels minds. But he doesn't care about people burning in Hell. He doesn't even rule the lake of fire. That will be his punishment one day.

He can't force them. He can't force anyone to do anything. The Bible defines temptation as anything that separates you from God, that pulls you away from him. Casual sex with people you don't care about, partaking in excessive drinking or eating. Not helping others. Vitriol and hatred and curses coming from you. I think the Lord's prayer is more about praying to God for help in not wanting to do all the things that God doesn't want us to do. Sin is not Satan's property. It's intrinsic in the absence of God. A half-truth: I tell you that if you go through the door on the left, you'll die. You would conclude that the right door is the safer route. What I have failed to mention is that you'll die if you go through that door too. Did I lie? No. I told you nothing but the truth. I just didn't tell you the entire truth. In Christianity, only God can bestow spiritual life. Once someone sins, they're dead spiritually. An acceptance of God brings their soul back to life. The Bible also says the Holy Spirit then resides in you. So every time you sin, you're broken and dying. But the Spirit mends you and cures you. Adam and Eve had a connection no other living human has had. They had an Eden. By choosing to ignore God, they sinned. They died. They were more God-like, with free will and a knowledge of all the choices they could make, but they were no longer pure. God is quite destructive throughout the OT. Anyways, hatred is in opposition to God in that it's not love, but it's not as bad as selfishness. Jesus preached two rules. Love God more than anything, and love your neighbor more than yourself. Not caring is the worst thing you can do. Satan was the highest archangel, and the most beautiful angel in all of heaven. He never explicitly states that he desires destruction and Hellfire. He simply wanted to be above God, to be higher than God. My opinion is that he didn't think that humans deserved God's unconditional love. He thought they needed to be tested. And he tested them. They failed. And Satan also failed God because he looked for faults, instead of loving and nurturing God's creations.

Satan didn't trick them at all. He told nothing but the truth, even if they were half-truths. They did have God's knowledge in a way. Before the fall of man, they only knew good, they only knew the perfect relationship they had with God. After they disobeyed, they knew what the rest was like. They had an idea of good and evil afterwards. They wouldn't die physically. They died spiritually. The fruit would make them like God. It did. They know what the world is like outside of utopia. Only is so much as them being "worldly", and Christians succumbing to the id-driven ways of men. The Bible says nothing about Satan possessing people and using them to make Christians falter. And I personally believe Satan tempts no one. He is simply an opposing force to God, driven by pure selfishness, not hatred. Selfishness and indifference-to-others is the opposite of God, not hatred and sin. Indeed. The banishment of Adam and Eve from Eden is an interesting topic.

EM waves can travel through space!
A Tripolation replied to Zarnaxus's topic in Modern and Theoretical Physics
The following is a concept that is based on Maxwell's Equations, most notably, Faraday's Law, and Ampere's Law. Say you have a changing electric field. You will generate a magnetic field. Let's say that this electric field oscillates, going back and forth from positive to negative. That oscillation will generate a magnetic field. Because the electric field's rate of change has to change in order to allow it to oscillate back and forth, the magnetic field will not be constant and it will change over time. Then, Faraday's law states that a changing magnetic field (which is what we have so far) induces an electrical field. So, the changing magnetic field creates a changing electric field. The electric field generates a changing magnetic field. And the process starts all over again. Electromagnetic radiation, of which light is an example of, is electric and magnetic fields, self-propagating through space. It can be seen as a car that runs off if it's own exhaust. Self-powered, and no need for a medium or aether. Hope this makes sense. -
I've also never heard of souls having any power. Power is God's alone, glory is God's alone, ect ect. Those who have never believed are just presumed to be lost, according to Christianity. Thus, they are already aligned with the Devil. He doesn't have to tempt them. Though I personally feel this is ridiculous. It does make for a good story that Lucifer and God have a wager for the souls of humanity. Whoever has the most wins.

In my opinion, nothing beats chalk and a chalkboard, though I don't know if this counts as an implement. For my everyday writing, I use the Pilot Precise V5. It's a rollerball tip, a fine .5 point, and it doesn't bleed through your paper like uniballs do. I try to do my math in fountain pen whenever I have the chance. It's just a 3$ disposable one, but I still think it looks nice. Does run out awful quickly though. My pencil is a .5 Pilot SideFX that I've managed to hang onto for two years. It's sturdy, has a twisty eraser, and a nice rubber grip. And I prefer laptop keys to anything else. I hate raised keys. And I dislike spacing between them. I thought I was the only person who cared about what they wrote with. Glad to see I'm not a weirdo.
