I'm also a huge fan of firefox. Everything Capn, said is spot-on. It's secure and has amazing things called add-ons, that make everything so much easier. For example, one makes the load progress appear behind the address bar, Safari style. Another is SecureLogin, which makes having psuedo-random passwords feasible. I could go on and on, but I invite you to take a look for yourself.

How to become a physics/math/engineering professor?
A Tripolation replied to HamsterPower's topic in Science Education
I'm not sure if this is the norm or just something at my school, but all of my professors, the ones in the Engineering department at least, had experience working in the field before they started teaching. The most "inexperienced" was Dr. Goble, and even she had worked for an engineering firm for about six years. So that might be something you would also need to look at to be competitive in academia. Maybe. -
What would it take for you to worship a god?
A Tripolation replied to A Tripolation's topic in Religion
They were prideful, Lucifer mostly so, for desiring a seat higher than God. And pride is considered a sin to the Judeo-Christian God. And sins are classified as evil. It's quite a radical shift to view the fallen angels as entities to be respected, if that's what you're implying. -
What would it take for you to worship a god?
A Tripolation replied to A Tripolation's topic in Religion
That's a dam good question Mr Skeptic. The typical answer is that they're evil and want God's power no matter the cost, but I feel there may have been other reasons. What if his moral alignment were never revealed to you, and this god would never allow you to know? Would you still worship it? -
What would it take for you to worship a god?

Ah. I didn't see the Paradise Lost reference. Thank you, Sisyphus. And that's what I'm talking about. What worship would you refuse? What Hell would you avoid at all costs? -
What would it take for you to worship a god?
A Tripolation replied to A Tripolation's topic in Religion
Traditional Christian theology (the only one that Lucifer plays a large part in) has Lucifer being no more omnipotent than the other Archangels. Powerful, but not capable of damnation. So I'm not sure what you meant. But I appreciate your second sentence. That's what I was after. Thanks. -
How should I present a talk on an article?
A Tripolation replied to Genecks's topic in Science Education
I can't say I'd be at all interested but in the most basic tenets of the methodology. Do you think they want to hear about it, or are they like me? That's one of the major problems I have with medicinal seminars and such. I'd rather hear about relevant connections to current research and how this study furthers understanding. -
What would it take for you to worship a god?
A Tripolation replied to A Tripolation's topic in Religion
So you're saying that since the idea of a deity or deities exists outside your logical thought process, you can't answer? Apologies if this statement is incorrect. -
Say you die, and you are confronted with this entity. Let's presume it has the omnipotence and omniscience like many gods of various pantheons do. It didn't care whether or not your worship was sincere, but it demanded it, or eternal punishment was the consequence. Would you worship it, or accept the punishment? What I'm asking is if anyone could logically accept eternal punishment that will never end over something as finite and subjective as pride or morals. BTW, this question has no ulterior motives and is not setting anyone up for anything. I do not believe in a Hell. So. What would you do?

September 11th; does anyone else think it was suspicious
A Tripolation replied to Fanghur's topic in Speculations
Wait, there are actually people that think it was a nuclear detonation? Now I can see how you would maybe entertain C4, but nukes? Why have I never heard of this craziness before? -
Continuous Frictioned Motion Machine
A Tripolation replied to christopherkirkreves's topic in Speculations
Energy cannot be created. If the sum of all energies put into a system is n, then the output cannot be n + k. Doesn't work. -
Continuous Frictioned Motion Machine
A Tripolation replied to christopherkirkreves's topic in Speculations
Imagine if all the creative energy that goes into trying to bend or destroy the laws of thermodynamics went into discovering new ways to implement renewable energy, or finding new sources of energy? *sigh* -
Something about the little bible banger club people.
A Tripolation replied to MR. Science's topic in Speculations
I'm a Christian. You're doing a grave disservice to Jesus by being so rash and hateful. You should be ashamed of your tactics. He would. Creationists simply use dishonest science. That's why biologists get fed up with them. -
Basic Science is Duller than Basic Humanities
A Tripolation replied to Marat's topic in Science Education
I was utterly bored during my social science courses. They were mind-numbingly easy. I never studied for a sociology test. It was all common sense, with the exception of some foreign terminology. I am a Physics and English dual major. I see the beauty in both. However, I accept that it would be immensely hard for me to become a good research physicist or engineer without sitting through all the maths required. I can go out right now and probably contribute some useful analysis on Waiting for Godot or some other piece of literature. I'm even in the process of writing three different novels. But I can't go and make contributions to the theories of electricity and magnetism, or construct an efficient heating system without a great deal more training and education. So yes, it may be duller to be an undergrad physics student, but I would argue that it's entertaining to be a liberal arts major because it is so easy. You can start contributing immediately. Only a mastery of words and some critical thinking is required. Almost anyone can do it. The same is not true of physics, engineering, or mathematics. -
I'm surprised that this hasn't come up. This is an excellent resource. It's called MIT OpenCourseWare. It's actual lectures put up online for free. I used it to teach myself Linear Algebra because my professor sucked. It should help you immensely.

Indeed. I meant to italicize "at this moment" but for some reason did it to "implausible" instead. It's fixed now. My mistake.

You do realize that D H is an Aerospace Engineer, right? Probably one of the most qualified persons in this forum to discuss this topic with you? If he keeps insisting that other ideas are implausible at this moment, it's best to meet that with some belief. By all means research his claim, but he is most likely correct.

I think it's interesting. It probably is a lost cause.

If they try claiming physics or other religions are a scam, then yes, pretty much.

Well, if it would drastically hurt our economy, I'd say it would be a negative thing to regulate it. I didn't think there were many negatives. I just wanted to check with the members of this forum to see if they could think of anything. So if regulation wouldn't be a big deal, why has it not been done?

Dear Water Balls. That guy was a frickin' genius.
