The Technological Singularity: all but inevitable?
A Tripolation replied to dr.syntax's topic in Computer Science
Really? I wasn't aware that nanotechnology posed a threat. Could you elaborate for me? -
Wonderful talk. But, right around 51:50, when he starts talking about how "Cosmology will end" in the future, and other advanced civilizations will develop a "false" picture of how the universe looks, how do we know that this isn't already happening to us? How do we know that our picture is the true picture of the universe?

Man arrested for being naked in his own house
A Tripolation replied to bob000555's topic in The Lounge
What's it saying Snytho-sis, when almost everyone here agrees that he has the right to do whatever non-harmful thing on his property that freakin' wants? And notice how it WAS dark out, and they WERE trespassing on his property. Kids today see more sexual stuff on 8:00 shows than what that "heathen pervert" was doing by walking around his own kitchen. You have no case whatsoever, Syntho-sis. And that was a good point (to whoever brought it up) that minor, unintentional "sex offenses" are out in the same category as rapists and child molesters. -

No, Syntho-sis, your logic is completely wrong Manslaughter [math]\ne[/math] unintentional flashing in your own home while someone trespass on your property. What it would be equivalent to is you driving in the middle of night and someone just jumping out in the road in front of you, and you killing them. The man was in his own home, at an early hour. I seriously doubt that he was trying to expose himself. Well see, that's whats great about the law. We all don't have to feel the same way as you. Just because you feel that way is not grounds for punishing someone else for feeling differently about the topic. She was walking through HIS yard, looking through HIS windows. If the situation were reversed, he would probably be charged for...attempted rape or something by this woman. As a child, I was more "harmed" by people yelling in public (I come from a family that wouldn't scream if they were on fire), than I would have been to see a naked man. -
Dam...why are all your videos an hour long... Is this accessible to those inexperienced with modern comsology and theoretical physics? If so, I may have to take time out and watch it.

But Fox News is all...news-y. Just because you disagree with their bias automatically demotes them to a...not-news organization?

The Technological Singularity: all but inevitable?

So the benefits would be great, but then they outweigh the possible risk of the AI wiping humanity off the face of the Earth?- 144 replies

The Technological Singularity: all but inevitable?
A Tripolation replied to dr.syntax's topic in Computer Science
So, if almost everyone recognizes the potential for an AI to get out of control (in an evil robot overlord type way)...then why do people still want to go through with it? -
Ha. Thank God for JillSwift. I was about ready to...uhhhh...drink beer and do...manly things.

Coberst, that's not graffiti. When Mooeypoo writes in purple it means she's speaking as a mod and about to do something mod-ish, ie, closing your thread, suspending you, crushing your hopes and dreams, ect ect.

Well, I sincerely appreciate your support dr. syntax, but I most likely did leave the impression that I was a deist in some PMs I sent him. My mistake for being vague. And I consider myself to share many beliefs with deists. Again, thank you.
-
ACTUALLY, I'm a deist that believes in Jesus Christ...but I'm just being pedantic. And yes, those two beliefs are compatible. And if they're not, well I MADE them compatible.

Well I have a dual boot with linux and Win7 already. The lovely JillSwift helped me with that a month or so ago. But linux has never looked as good as that. What am I not doing right? Edit: I have Kubuntu 9.04

That is freakin' amazing!!!! I wants it... Any help?

Well those are all incredibly good points. My rebuttal is that I don't believe in those Gods because I've looked at the writings that are respective to those Gods' existence, and I found them to be...wrong. Don't ask me why, because I couldn't tell you. I just know that I think Jesus was awesome, and I like the way he saw the world. Of course, it's much more complicated than that, but I won't go into all my mushy feelings here. And I don't think skepticism is arrogant, I think the absolute REFUSAL of the existence of a god is arrogant. It's saying, "Humans are able to understand anything and everything. If we haven't observed it, it's not worth our time, and it probably doesn't exist." That's not how I want to live. If someone told me that there was a unicorn in the pantry, and I find a book containing some beautiful messages that was de facto-ly written by the unicorn, and the unicorn had hundreds of millions of believers, I'd at least look into it. Then, I would see that there is no harm in me believing in this unicorn since he tends to make things better for me personally. I would then be subjected to attacks by unicorn haters, but I would pat them on the head and tell them that my unicorn loves them, and make them all the more angry. There, there, iNow. My unicorn forgives you.

Hey, I would use linux if it was just as pretty, but not even KDE has graphics on par with Windows Aero (and I was PROMISED it would lol). Meh, I couldn't mod open-source-anything anyways, so I guess windows really is best for me. But can't we all come together and hate on the elitist mac-users? They think they're so great, when in fact, all the cool kids use freeware.

How does it contradict reality? I'm not adversely affected by my belief in a deity. My sucking at math is ALL ME. It's worth holding onto because it is something different than humanity's perpetually violent and hateful nature. That's my reason anyways, I won't be presumptuous enough to speak for all theists. You can say that's just wishful thinking, but then I would disagree with you, and then beat you down with my anti-atheist Bible that I reserve for beating people down.

Ha, I guess I'm the only one here who values a pretty gui over performance. I love me windows. And 7 actually ain't that bad. And I can play ANY game I want.

Most of science isn't wrong. But must scientific rigor drive you in every way, shape, and form? Must you believe that all to life is what humans are capable of measuring and seeing and observing? Think about how arrogant it is for us as a species to disbelieve something because we cannot see it or understand it. While it's true that we have no proof whatsoever, and that God is highly illogical, I just don't think it is right to dismiss it based on those facts. And no, I don't believe it fair to equate religion to the tooth fairy. One of my favorite quotes is that "Science and Religion are not at odds, Science is merely too young to understand", and it pretty much sums up my feelings on the subject. You need not reconcile your beliefs for science or vice versa. I also find it interesting that it also says in the Bible "A day is a thousand years and a thousand years a day to our Lord". Seems to nail in the fact that he is beyond our understanding as of yet.

Don't listen to iNow, he founded the Evil Atheist Coalition....he's pure concentrated evil. Well if he chooses to believe that, then ok. But I don't see how believing in a God would not make you "enjoy your life". True, religion causes stress sometimes, but so do a multitude of other voluntary things/beliefs. I'm just wondering as to the OP's original concern.
