This calculator will be very beneficial to you, especially when you're doing a tough integral and don't have a Table of Integrals handy. But as mentioned above, DO NOT let it be a substitute for learning derivatives or integration techniques. Just use it for annoying algebra or to simplify messy problems. Note: This calculator may not be allowed on some exams because it is a CAS. Also, you can't use calculators like this on most standardized tests.

I've only very briefly skimmed through some of the posts in this thread, but I'm going to answer the OP with my own opinion. Apologies if they have been hashed out over and over again. 1. Healthy food is NOT cheap, unless you grow it yourself. It's safe to say that many poor people cannot get a self-sustaining garden going/ 2. Taxing junk food more heavily would work so long as there were healthy foods to buy at the same price as the junk food. (I eat junk food in college because it's so freaki' cheap. I buy clementines whenever possible, though. It's not cheap.) 3. This is a blight on personal liberty and free market. But they do it to cigarettes and--though not as heavily--alcohol. So it only seems fair to do it to something as unhealthy as junk foods.

Does quantum theory really undermine determinism?
A Tripolation replied to John Salerno's topic in Quantum Theory
This was already given to you. It is accurate. -

He helps people a LOT more than he calls ideas rubbish. And, trust me, everything that he says is rubbish IS rubbish. -

I evened out your neg-rep, DrRocket, because you've always taken the time to help me when I need it. Though, I am curious, why aren't you helping to address the misinformation in this thread? I understand that questionposter may be a tad stubborn at times, but, in this, he seems deliberately trying to understand the HUP without the requisite knowledge of probabilities, wave packets, etc. Isn't it better to correct him with a few good links or books or explanations than to call his posts rubbish? -
...that's it? That's all there was to it? Sigh.

So, I had my first Mechanics II exam. There was one particular problem that drove me absolutely insane. I had no idea how to tackle it. Since I won't get the test back for another week or two, I decided someone here might be able to help me. The question is (roughly): A particle is moving in an elliptical orbit. The ratio of the maximum angular momentum to the minimum angular momentum of the particle is 'n'. Prove that the eccentricity of the orbit is [math]\epsilon = \frac{\sqrt{n}+1}{\sqrt{n}-1}[/math]. So, what should I have done to start this problem? I'm thinking it has something to do with the relationship between the r0 or r1, but I'm not sure.

If everything in the universe adds to zero, why do we need a God?
A Tripolation replied to morgsboi's topic in Religion
A nucleus is a massive part of an atom that contains protons. How is this in any way comparable to radiation left over from the rapid expansion of the universe? -
...is this guy for real?

Also, you can't just "grab tobacco leaves" and start using them for your experiment. Tobacco goes through an extensive cultivation and curing process. And deviation from that will result in an erroneous sample. It's February. Most tobacco farmers have already sold their cured tobacco by now, but you still might be able to find some that are ready for processing.

I don't but I'm hesitant to say that a documentary that is so one-sided is a 'good documentary'. There is no antagonist in these conflicts. Each side has committed atrocities in the name of land that is their by divine right or original claim. And if I recall correctly, the Six Day War was a result of several nations plotting to push Israel to extinction...and then Israel smacked them around. I know from your tone that you seem to be pro-palestinian or whatever. But to me, they are both wholly at fault for their troubles.

This entire thread seems like Swansont trying to teach owl relativity and owl responding "Nuh uh!!!"
-
I follow this thread off and on, so I don't know if this has happened or not. Has anyone actually showed owl the math that falls out of SR leading to length contraction? It's pretty simple algebra once you get past the derivations. Maybe that would help him to understand that shape is frame-dependent.

I believe in the Judeo-Christian God with alterations reminiscent of deism and some flavors of forgiveness-for-all. I have no evidence to support this belief. Current hypotheses, as I best understand them, lead us to believe that the universe was created due to quantum fluctuations. This was then followed by a rapid expansion of spacetime known as the Big Bang. This expansion is still occurring based off of recent astronomical observations. Our best model, and it is still in its infancy, is known as abiogenesis. After this, we use the observable fact known as evolution to show species divergence and such. Random mutations arise as a result of imperfect replication at the cellular level. Some of these mutations are advantageous. Others are not. The ones that adversely affect the organism are "selected against" because the organism doesn't live long enough to reproduce sexually and pass along its mutation. If the mutation is very beneficial, it will be "selected for" as the organism will have better access to resources and partners based off its mutation. This mutation will then be passed along. After many (many) years have passed, the organisms will no longer be categorically identical to their predecessors. They will be a new species. This is an incredibly simplified explanation and you should research the topic from actual biologists. The Earth is approximately 4.5 billion years old. This link contains the reasons why we know this to be true. Life on other planets is a statistical certainty. By "aliens" I presume you mean highly advanced civilizations capable of interstellar travel with ease. This, I do not know. I believe so, but I have no evidence to back this up. UFOs exist. They are simply unidentified flying objects. I presume you mean alien spacecraft? If I'm right, then, no, I do not believe in those. But then again, if they were capable of coming to our planet, they are probably capable of cloaking their craft as well. Who knows. Evolution will always happens so long as life exists and life will always find a way. There is no "end result" to evolution. Evolution does not have a goal. It does not have a direction. It is the accumulation of random mutations over a period of time. Yes. I believe in the Christian concept of a soul and heaven. It doesn't affect me at all because it is irrelevant. I try to live a good life and I want to leave this world a little better than I found it. Yes. If you are attending "Bible School", I'm certain that your instructors will dismiss any responses you get here as the secularist rantings of liberal nation. I urge you to not believe everything you hear without questioning it. Science is the empirical methodology by which we are able to explain our observable universe. It is not evil. It is not lying to you. Science is amoral. Science has no ulterior motives. Science does not seek converts. Science does not wish to punish those who lack "faith" in it. Science simply...is. Science does not seek to invalidate your God. Your God, if he is a transcendental God (most are), exists outside of science and logic. Remember that. I hope you stay and enjoy your time on this wonderful forum.

Dude, you need math. Bignose and others have been trying to tell you this for a very long time now but you won't listen. Words ain't gonna cut it. I'm sorry, but that's just the way it is. Mathematics is the language of the universe.

I'm sorry. I don't understand this post at all.

I would love to see the records that state that Puff the Magic dragon existed in reality. If you really are not aware of the roman records pertaining to Jesus, I suggest you read up on them before dismissing the existence of a highly political and influential human such as Jesus Christ.
-
They are a possible answer if you are to believe the holy texts. I really don't understand what is so confusing about this.
-
No need to address the rest since your basic premise was incorrect.
-
Yes, it does. If the answers are not to your satisfaction, then you should seek answers elsewhere. I don't think he knew that.

I agree that science is great. I wouldn't be suffering through Introductory Quantum right now if I didn't think it was great. I DO CARE if it's true. Maybe I'm not being clear enough. There are a certain set of questions that often arise that science cannot currently address or that science will never be able to address, due to the nature of those questions. To me, that doesn't mean that those questions are without substance or truth, just that we may never be able to have the answers to them. Religion provides those answers for people like me. Some aren't satisfied with those answers. That's cool, whatever. As long as you don't run around hurting people, I have no problem with your beliefs, be it Hinduism, Atheism, Wiccan, etc. Yes, unfortunately that's not possible for every question. I greatly respect people that have faith when tragedy befalls them or something that should destroy their faith in God does not; in that instance, their faith is quite the virtue. You are either misrepresenting what I said, or I wasn't being clear enough.
-
Because I like the notion of some overseeing-creator. This quote displays quite a disgusting militant stance on atheism and I'm surprised to see it coming from you. You know I'm a theist. And you're surprised I have faith in that which cannot be seen or proven? Please refrain from further usage of such negative adjectives when discussing my faith when I am trying to discuss it in sincerity with you. I almost reported your post, but decided to give you the benefit of a doubt based on the fact that I consider us friends.

Not that it's better suited. Just that it can answer pretty much everything science can't because it has no discernible method of verification. It's all faith.
