  1. That is quite impressive if it is indeed true.
  2. I appreciate that you guys are so safe in storing you chems (you definitely do a better job than I do), but I don' believe that it's the best way to argue against chem restrictions; it wouldn't be accurate to say that most people with chems store them as well as you do, especially considering all the k3wls out there.
  3. agreed
  4. The fact remains that if someone wanted to blow up an abortion clinic badly enough they'd find another way to procure the materials.
  5. Way to go guys! Spread the word to your fellow scientist friends! I for one care enough about chemistry to take some action, and I'm glad to see that there are others out there who share the same feeling. This is not bogus, this is real. No efforts can be in vain.

    Weed

I agree. Self control is the key to smoking habitually or to using it periodically.

hmm... this is all subjective... the whole athlete drug testing thing is just protocol due to the bad image that marijuana has. People don't like to see athletes as "stoners." It's just not the "right" image for the role models of society. Personally, I think the choice to smoke marijuana in the privacy of your own home should be a right and how it affects you physically or mentally is a consequence you should be prepared to accept. Also, there is no need to be outspoken about smoking; it shouldn't rule your life, and the smoking should stay in your home. And now that I think of it, I don't think "enhanced performance" should justify the use of marijuana because for the most part (marijuana affects people differently) it detracts from your performance. It should be used as a relaxant and nothing more.
  8. This is a longshot, but every American home-chemist with a passion for science should consider writing their congressman about this absurd topic. We should definitely voice our opinions. The funny thing is that most of the people who replied to this thread do not live in the U.S. (sigh)
  9. These are sad times for me... I wish there was something that could be done...

Don't forget that a lot of the greatest jazz musicians/composers who ever lived, ie. John Coltrane, Philly Joe, Cannonball Adderly, were all "stoners." Weed isn't necessarily bad for you in small doses, but, obviously, being a chronic smoker is detrimental to one's health.
  11. I'm quite pissed myself; for one thing I own almost all of the chemicals on the list. Does this make me a threat to the country? Another thing is that there is no logic in banning chemicals. Is the ATF really afraid of terrorists, or are they just making a futile attempt to reduce petty crime? This is an infringement on our rights, and I really hope that these restrictions don't go into effect. I really love chemistry, but now it looks like I may not get to explore this beautiful area of science.
  12. Everybody take a look at this! http://www.unitednuclear.com/legalaction.htm If what it says is true, then this could mean the end of chemistry experiments for a lot of people at this forum! This cannot happen! Let me hear your opinions.
  13. you know... I like the smell of kentucky fried chicken, whatever the chemicals are the give it its smell
  14. Three things: 1. Aluminum powder ranges from bright silver to dark grey depending on the mesh, but the overall color shade is grey. 2. The sodium hydroxide test is probably the easiest way. Just get some lye from your local hardware store and then make a dilute solution of it. Drop a dash of the powder you have in the solution. If you notice an immediate and rapid reaction, then you most likely have aluminum. 3. Also, Al doesn't burn unless strongly heated. Think Mg burns easier, but I could be wrong.
  15. Sorry but you won't have any luck getting answers to these kinds of questions. And I don't think there is an acid that will "burn" a hole through cement.

    Soap?

actually, you should just go to your local hardware store. They should have Red Devil lye, 100% pure sodium hydroxide. Peace.
  17. What exactly are the advantages of DC current?
  18. I've never fully understood the difference between alternating current and direct current. What is the difference? Could someone explain in simple terms and then maybe in more detail?
  19. Thanks for all your input, guys. I really appreciate it, BUT what goes on chemically in your body/brain? I've seen a post that says, "we don't know yet." Is this true?
  20. I was just curious as to what exactly happens chemically when you go to sleep that makes it so important. I mean, what goes on when you sleep that it takes up a fourth of your lifespan?
  21. Neodymium's pretty nasty stuff from what I'm told. United nuclear sells magnets that can pull objects from more than 10ft away. I'm guessing it would be futile to attempt to demagnetize these magnets.
  22. I've always wondered what goes on inside our bodies (chemically and mechanically) while we sleep. What is happening at the molecular level that makes sleep soooooo important that it takes up one-third of our entire lifespan? Why is sleep essential to most all lifeforms?
  23. Come on! NAZIS! I'm sure they used the most horrificly unimaginable torture methods possible. That included incinerating alive and gassing and much more....
  24. I don't think that books should be banned unless they are truly harmful to society and morality in a genuinely threatening manner. By this I mean that books should only be banned if their focus is to openly and plainly advocate and promote such immoral atrocities as racism, genocide, murder, sex offenses, etc...... If people dislike a book to the degree that they feel it should be banned, they should simply dismiss the book and not read it anymore. They shouldn't try and get it banned at the author's expense of not being able to express his ideas and people not being able to read the book. Both reader and author should have the feedom of speech. Thus, readers should be able to criticize a book (or burn it if they absolutely hate it), but authors should have the security of exemption from banning unless their works are in violation of the above stated. People can think for themselves and don't need other people banning a book to say that it's bad. People should formulate their own opinion about a book before joining a book-banning-bandwagon. Books should not be banned because a few people got offended or disliked it or took it so literally that they wanted to ban Harry Potter because they believed it was blasphemy to Christianity.
  25. I meant without completely destroying the magnet itself.
