I think Gabriel on Swordfish (movie from 2001) he suggests Mis-direction, at least in the case of Houdini.

So what are some solutions to this?, it seems change is needed on both sides. -
Should Police Departments Be Given More Money?
paulsutton replied to Alex_Krycek's topic in Politics
It could be that is because as civilians you expect if you get pulled over you will be met by an officer with gun drawn or at least one of them can open fire at a seconds notice, hence you show hands at all times. so the situation is tense from the start, where as here, and watching police programs where they pull people over the situation is a lot less confrontational. On the other hand look at what has happened here with PC harper being dragged for over a mile by 3 people in a stolen car, only for them to be charged with manslaughter, what is worse they got what was it <10 years and they thought it was funny when arrested and were smirking I am no expert but quite how 3 people in a car, didn't notice what was happening to the police officer is most disturbing and makes me wonder how someone came to the conclusion. -
Should Police Departments Be Given More Money?

It does seem in a lot of cases these people are 'known' to the police which does raise the question of how well the Channel /prevent programme is funded, or maybe more to the point how well partner agencies are funded. Anyone referred has to give consent but also can be referred to say youth services (if under 18) to provide more positive activities, of course funding for which has been cut right back. I sort of understand the process from undergoing the online awareness training for prevent and channel processes. -

Indeed as with the case in the Westminster bridge attack, which I have mentioned elsewhere in this thread. I am guessing your from the UK, I watched Dom (Dom Littlewood) Does America this morning, ( 18/8/2020 ) he was working with the Texas police department, they carry spray, taxers and guns of course, but go in to every situation as if it is hostile, even a routine car stop, and they expect to be shot at and maybe killed. -

In the UK we have what was called the IPCC independent police complaints committee it is their job to look in to situations if a police officer opens fire it can be referred to the IPCC or the police can refer the matter so it is investigated and the facts gained as to why. Even with the Westminster bridge attack last year, it was the people that held down the terrorist and the police shot him dead, he had already stabbed two people to death. I think the police referred themselves. -

The police here in the UK try and diffuse situations, very rarely do the police open fire and kill people, a very low percentage of UK police carry Guns. Those that do are specialist units. Police carry Tazers . I think most have access to CS gas (or is it pepper spray). -
Astatine as an anti cancer treatment
paulsutton posted a topic in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
I found an article on this via twitter which is at https://cen.acs.org/physical-chemistry/Astatine-chemistry-puzzle-shows-anticancer/98/i31?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=CEN I am just interested in science here so tried to build the molecule from molecular model kit. I am not sure if I have built it correctly though, mostly between the C6H4At – and N2 portion, i have had to put a carbon to allow for the bend so assumed that is taken up with a carbon and perhaps 2 hydrogens, (based on my limited understanding of this) there is a molecule diagram on the above website, I made a video (granted not very good with a webcam) of my effort and would like any feedback on if I got this right or nearly right please. https://diode.zone/videos/watch/06179a75-3e87-4955-9f1d-b2b93fa6d8f6 This is posted to my peer tube account so i can share here and on my blog. Just interesting to build stuff to try and learn more,, The silver coloured atom is meant to represent At (Astatine), I may have got away with using a green atom which represents halogens fluorine and Chlorine for example. Thanks for any help on this, Paul -
Hi Just been watching a video on PBS space time (you tube channel) on black holes (well building modelsi a lab which is also interesting) this is really interesting with Hawking radiation being apparently responsible for black hole, mass loss . This got me thinking if white holes are the opposite to black holes as they emit energy rather than pull it in, and a white hole is possible at the other end of a black hole, are these also perhaps responsible for mass loss. I think the two being linked is some sort of theory or idea anyway, but would it need a model where we take a black hole and a corresponding white hole would emit mass = to that taken in by the black hole, minus the hawking radiation escaping from the black hole and minus any energy created as IIRC energy and mass are interchangeable. I am not a theoretical physicist so just interested in these topics. I do understand a little about matter conservation, so just interested to work out where does all this matter go inside a black hole ? I have shared the video on my blog post so sharing the post here, to help answer this included my thoughts on if white holes are possibly responsible for mass reduction. https://personaljournal.ca/paulsutton/building-black-holes-in-a-lab Sharing my blog is in not meant to be self promotion, it is a place to put my thoughts so to help me share on forums such as this and a place to add extra resources relating to the question. . Thanks Paul

Are people that do crime really responsible?

I agree, while as you say we as a society we need make it clear they have done wrong, the rehabilitation could be about teaching them the skills they need to contribute to society in a positive way, which is what we want. There is no point taking someone who can't read and write, who commits crimes, to one side, put them in jail, releasing them only for them to go back to what they were doing before, because they lack literacy skills for example. Surely this is a barrier to them getting a good job, decent accomodation and adult education courses may not be available or there could be other barriers. So yes, jail needs to send a strong message, but also perhaps help people back on track but not be seen as a free ride to a free 2nd chance education you are till locked up in your cell, still denied freedom to come and go, and still subject to rules. Lets find out why that person in jail, clearly there are some crimes that warrant locking up for a very long time, but it seems for many, prison is a revolving door, we also need to perhaps fix the system so ex offenders can actually work in certain posts, perhaps having been on the wrong side of the law, been in jail, but took the chance and to work hard, and gain a good set of qualifications to turn their life around, that person could mentor people and steer them away from jail which from experience they would not want any one else to have to go through. Jail should not be the only way to turn lives around, we need proper funding of adult education and homeless / addiction / other groups who take people who have fallen off the radar and actually help them, that may stop them falling in to the revolving door mentioned above. Also no reason really why some ex offenders should not be able to say join the army, police or other services, for the same reason, as a community officer you perhaps are there to prevent and help people to stay on the right track. -

I agree, we would have to use any resources we find, maybe if we cant tra If we can't travel faster than light, would we have to develop ship automation and find a way to put people in stasis so they are asleep for the journey or most of it. Of course there is no prediction as to what could happen and yes by the time we get there, humans back on Earth will have moved on technologically., I think we need to look at having a base of exploration closer to home, learn more about the outer planets, how to extract minerals from Asteroids before we even think about interstellar travel. -

Surely even if we travel via a spaceship to other worlds or between worlds, we would need to stop off places for resources etc. I would assume our desire to explore the universe would include contact with other worlds. I don't think the idea would be to take over and colonise other worlds, Maybe we need to adopt something like the prime directive in Star Trek so there are sets of rules and values. Given we have quite a lot of the things that appeared in star trek e.g video conferencing, Padds (tablets / phones) communications (well the old nokia phone was a flip phone ), then this would surely also include a legal and value system. -
I am not a legally trained or career guidance person either. There is the rehabilitation of offenders act that covers this in the UK. However are you not assigned a mentor or given access to advisers who can give proper guidance on this. ? Everyone makes errors, it is how we accept those mistakes and move on, I don't think you need to put on your CV you are an RSO, you may have to account for gaps in employment or training (but this may be more for school posts, which would not be relevant here). Your university should be able to offer careers advice too and will probably have study mentors. Even as an Open University student there is still access to study and careers help. Maybe hang around here, ask questions , answer questions and build a good rapport with the community, even that can count towards something Hope this helps Paul

So having built Polyethylene and Polyethene from molymods I am left with 2 free Carbon bonds which I an use to chain them together. Just tried to build PolyPropene and just have 1 free carbon bond, so I can attach to a 2nd polypropene (included the info graphic for reference above) Am I doing something wrong or does polymerisation work differently for different types of monomers. I am kinda learning as I go along and making blog posts, the end game is to gain a basic understanding of this, enough to help in schools, it just seems interesting what I am finding. After posting an initial video to Peertube ( like you tube but decentralised ) it was suggested I use Molview, this works but I think I am discovering far more about this above with the actual physical building. So am I doing something wrong. I need to look in to this further as putting two polypropene molecules together just looks like there is an Alkane chain of 6 Carbon and 14 Hydrogen C6H14

There are such things as mitigating circumstances. If behaviour is learned then a child who is abused may go on to abuse others as an adult or even as a child, while clearly this is not acceptable it can be taken in to consideration. On a similar note a person who is a victim of say domestic violence may kill in self defence or maybe poison their abuser, is this murder (even if planned) or is it a sign they want to get out of a situation and feel killing their abuser is the only choice they have. Each case should be treated as an individual case. -
Hi I am trying to write some tutorials on molecular modelling and making some videos to help me. Looking at Polystyrene do i build a benzene ring for that part of the molecule then attach the rest to that As in six carbon atoms e 3 double bonds and 3 single bonds and 5 hydrogen atoms as the sixth is replaced with the C2H3 component.? As part of this series I am linking to here so people can ask for help on science related issues. So fingers crossed we will get a few more people on the forum. Thank you in advance for any help . I am on your side on this, I was just trying to speculate as to what they meant by risks. Can someone provide more information on what is meant by "because of the potential dangers of nuclear accident?" In the mean time, this is from 2011 but may be interesting https://www.space.com/13702-nuclear-generators-rtg-power-nasa-planetary-probes-infographic.html Paul

Well going on "because of the potential dangers of nuclear accident? " I am guessing someone is worried about a rocket exploding on launch and spreading radioactive material over a wide area. It would be useful to have more details. I am sure any reactors would be encased anyway. Paul

Surely rights go along side responsibility, I have the right to go out and walk in to my local town centre, but the responsibility to act safely, obey the law for example. In a similar way have having a drivers license gives people the right to drive, when a person reaches 18 or 21 (in the US) they can buy alcohol they they have the responsibility to drive safely and are considered able to make judgements, if they choose to drink and then drive, and end up killing someone they need to be held accountable. Granted the seller also has some responsibility to refuse to sell more to someone who is clearly intoxicated. --- On a side topic, I get notifications of replies here, if I click on the link I get the following. I logged in and then tried to follow the link a 2nd time, and got the same error page. Any idea what is causing this? -
But we use elements such as plutonium to power space probes, surely the risk is the same when launching from earth if people are on board or not. Paul
