Well I am all stocked up on Dettol in case I come down with covid 19, and I have a couple of UV-C germicidal lamps just for good measure
  2. I'm no expert, but I would put it down to evolution, its just the way things happened. All living things are carbon based, so it was bound to have a carbon component of some sort. There probably are better materials but evolution is a slow process and it will take a long time before nature "finds" a better alternative, and since calcium carbonate has been the material of choice for so long, I don't think it will change ever to be honest. Most living things are at the chemical process level more complicated than they need to be with several processes needed to carry out a simple task, its just the way things evolved.
  3. Same, since i switched over to linux 3 years ago I have been using GIMP I also use RawTherapee which is a great program considering its open source, but it is nice if you can get a perfect shot, but it is not always possible to get that perfect shot every time. I have a Nikon D5600 myself and a few lenses. Its funny the first thread I start on a science forum turns into a discussion on photography, mind you I suppose the two subjects are related in many ways, optics, chemistry, electronics etc.
  4. Depends on the laser. Solid state lasers will generally have just one line (and perhaps a line from the pump laser if it uses one, but pump lasers are usually in the infrared range, therefore invisible...and they SHOULD be filtered anyway) Gas lasers, on the other hand will have several "spots" because of the mix of gasses used. Wavelegths can be measured using a diffraction grating and measuring the amount each beam is refracted, the amount the light is refracted is dependant on the wavelength and frequency can be calculated simply using the formula... f= c/w where c equals the speed of light w equals the wavelength
  5. Just thought I would say Hi and introduce myself. I have always been interested in pretty much all sciences. My main interests are with electronics, computers and photography the style of which I am having to adjust what with the current lockdown. Since I am spending pretty much all my time at home at the moment, I find myself sat at my computer a lot more, which gives me time to edit some of the photos I have taken.
