According to Stephen Jay Gould, we already have been evolving for earlier birth. We're born 6-9 months before we reach the stage of development at which other apes are born. Maybe this will continue further than it already has; maybe not.
The medical problems of our premature babies show the problem with shifting the timing back any earlier than it already is. If we were all born earlier, we'd all have the same medical problems of prematurity, unless other changes were also made to get around those challenges. For example, one problem is potential suffocation because the lungs aren't ready for air, so faster lung development would be needed. Solve all of the medical problems that can come with being born premature, and we could be born at least as early in development as marsupials are.
