the cloaks you see on youtube do not use the same principle, they are more like sheets of cameras and lights, an active cloak. http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/19/duke-scientists-build-theorized-invisibility-cloak-sort-of/ a similar method is used for cloaking sounds infact, there are plans(if it works) to use the technology to prevent tsunamis from hitting small islands. (anything large like a continent is still buggered though.)

there isn't a character map. thats on the computer. all that happens in the keyboard processor is that it picks up a key press and then sends out the corresponding binary code for that key. this binary code gets interpreted by the computer which determines whether it becomes a b, shift, capslock or one of those little n's with a ~ on top. it'll be the same code no matter what the current character map is. but the computer takes this code, compares it to what it THINKS the keyboard looks like and then displays what it thinks it is sending. obviously it is advantageous to use a character map that truely represents your keyboard but it is not a necessity. i once remapped my keyboard to dvorak to try it out, if i took that keyboard to another computer it would work as normal. there isn't much to it. a signal in gets translated to a signal out. it handles the key combos as well. you could do it without a processor too but you'd need some more wires.

there are 'cloaks' that allow the sound to pass around you as if you weren't there but it'd still be possible to determine the location if either a wide range of frequencies were used or they had sensitive equipment which could pick out the small anomalies left. not to mention that these have never been built large scale only small and would have to be custom designed for each object and cost a fortune in modelling alone.

So, why aren't we travelling at light speed yet ?
insane_alien replied to The Clairvoyant's topic in Speculations
its not a matter of working out how to do it, its a matter of things with mass cannot travel at the speed of light. this is why particle accelerators cannot achieve the speed of light even though with classical mechanics they should have enough energy to be going several hundred times that speed. -
yes, you do have to be objective in research. but really, some things have been done to death and still people keep on bringing up the same old arguements that have been disproven and shown to be wrong thousands and thousands of times. it gets annoying and eventually leads to frustration and anger at the peopl who still keep doing this despite overwhelming evidence. the nub of this is, we are human, not robots. annoy a human and they will respond, robots do not get annoyed.

it always both a wave and a particle though. there really isn't a difference in the quantum world.

like you've never called someone being ridiculously stubborn stupid. if someone kept claiming that water was dry and made of pink leprechauns wielding abba CD's despite all theevidence to the contrary then i think you would be inclined to call them stupid too. same scenario, different arguement.

could do. i'd give it a shot before trying it in class to make sure there won't be any embarassment over some decidedly nonicy icecream.

egg drop immediately springs to mind. you can show the difference between crumple zones and no crumple zones. or airbags. and it has lots of nice equations(acceleration *cough*) for you to go on about to keep your teacher happy (not much you can do to keep the janitor happy though, maybe clean up the worst of it yourself)

i wouldn't have said the yield was a third, maybe a tenth. but you should get enough for a demonstration.

so... where does the energy go?
-
photo electric effect is NOT the only evidence for photons you know. i suggest you go and learn some science before you carry on.
-
with a resonant system you have to put in energy faster than it is taken out of the system. the only thing with resonant systems is that you put the energy in in controlled little bursts which eventually build up to have a larger effect with respect to the amount of energy you put in at a time. no energy appears from nowhere.

quantum entanglement does not transmit information.
-
why are you laughing at that statement? you can have massless particles. matter without mass and hence no gravitational field.
-
as bob says. the problem is you are trying to apply physics to something that is inherintly physically impossible. so any answer is neither right or wrong. just completely irrelevant. assuming that the rod is a stiff as physically possible(which is still far stiffer than any known material even some hypothetical ones) the signal will travel at the speed of light.

its not matter that affects space-time but mass. and science isn't in the business of why, thats philosphy. science is in the business of 'how' it affects space time. at the moment there are several hypothesised ways that mass affects space time but we have been unable to create an experiment to determine the true cause. the LHC will shed some light on it but further testing is required.

should be as safe as using a fire extinguisher for the task. just wear some gloves to prevent cold burns and take the usual safety precautions when dealing with high pressure and very cold temperatures and it should be fine.

lucaspa, remember who you're talking to.

unfortunately accurate.

not 4.1GHz, its a pentium 4 clocked at 1GHz. you probably have a beefy enough processor. -
okay, here's an experiment you can do that is a little more refined than Mr Skeptics(but the principle is the same). get youself some conductive bodypaint. paint youself with it. everywhere. now, obviously you won't be going outside wearing this so just stay in the house doing whatever you do in your house. on of two things will happen. 1/ you stop getting shocked 2/ you continue getting shocked if 1 then it is an external phenomenon (static) if 2 then it is internal (nerve damage, trapped nerve, psychosomatic) nobody is targeting you with any sort of directed energy weaponry for the following reasons: its already being well tested with volunteers in the army. its bloody expensive at the moment they're doing a piss poor job of it. no point in just annoying an enemy slightly why the hell are you so important?

he isn't saying time has mass. he is saying that it is the proximity to the large mass(black hole) that is causing the timewarping effect. and time is a dimension, not a measurement. seconds are the measurement of time just like centimeters are the measure of distance. they are not equal though.

i know you can make codec is both so yes, it should be able to make sense of a video file given suitable add ons
