i agree that it is totally bunk. anyway, if everybody turned into ghosts when they die then the ghost density would be 541 ghosts per square mile (including oceans) so seeing a ghost should be something everybody has experienced on a regular basis yet it is actually a rare event. if we extrapolate this to other organisms (there have been claims of dogs and such) then sightings of ghosts should be even more common and vary from ghost bacteria to ghost veloceraptors. as these never happen i think we can chalk it up to overactive imagination and/or drugs. EDIT: source for ghost density: http://www33.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=number+of+people+who+have+ever+lived+on+earth+%2F+surface+area+of+earth

i don't think folding@home will do what you want. with F@H you don't get to choose what is folded, you get sent a work unit by the central server, your computer works through it and then sends the results back and gets another work unit.

what is this functional group called?
insane_alien replied to onequestion's topic in Organic Chemistry
it has plenty of people, you either just edit your post to say 'ignore this' or answer your own question by googling before anyone can reply. -
you still haven't answered the question about isotope separation. pleas answer it.

I have some questions about light.

alex, please be more coherent in your posts. i'm not even sure if what you are typing is english. -
How can I cheaply remove calcium carbonate residue?
insane_alien replied to Justonium's topic in Inorganic Chemistry
acids attack bases. it forms calcium acetate and carbon dioxide. the former is quite interesting as it easily forms super saturated solutions, plenty of videos on youtube featuring it. and there doesn't have to be anything slow about it. the only reason household vinegar is so slow is that it is very diluted, concentrated acetic acid would work quite fast. -
combustion chamber by the looks of it since it is above the nozzle. or what looks like the nozzle at anyrate.

Recommend a PC Configuration for Heavy Excel Calculations
insane_alien replied to dima777's topic in Mathematics
either of those will be much better than the pentium M. the desktop would be faster but the laptop will give you portability. but you have to remember that with a lot of calculations, it is still going to take a while to get through them all, don't expect either of them to manage to do it instantly, especially if the spreadsheet is going to expand some more. -
Latin Language Class over Spanish/German for Future Scientist?
insane_alien replied to bbrubaker's topic in Science Education
if you are going into the medical profession some latin may be useful. if not, then learn something else although it is not a necessity. the only latin i have seen in science is species names and there are some holdovers in chemical elements as represented on the periodic table(the symbol Pb is from Plumbum, the latin word for lead). -
How can I cheaply remove calcium carbonate residue?

vinegar should work fine. -
the first part of his question also mentions the separation of isotopes explicitly. also, see your graphs, why don't you label the damn axes, i can never tell which bit is supposed to be which, what the units are and so on. if you did this then you may get more replies. so again, answer his question and stop trying to run away from it.
-
elas, that has bugger all to do with isotope separation. answer his bloody question instead of skirting it like usual.

don't look in general discussion for one. general discussion topics do not need to be science based. pretty much everything bar this section has something to do with science, not hard to find.

agreed, that means my first nomination doesn't count as he never posted anything. I agree with Phi. the proposed changes to energy infrastructure are improvements on what is quite frankly antiquated technology. an aspect of it we can all agree on is that pollution=bad. the proposed changes to infrastructure would drasticly reduce said pollution and hence are a good idea whether you believe global warming or not. the fact you can take global warming out of the equation and still find these changes a worthwhile thing shows that it is a non-issue and your arguements to the contrary bear no effect on AGW or energy infrastructure. they have no relevancy here.

German anti-terror law affects online forums?
insane_alien replied to CaptainPanic's topic in Politics
would it also include highschool chemistry textbooks? there is sufficient information in those to construct an IED. while it does not explicitly give all the information in one continuous section, it would only require putting the appropriate sections together to have all the required knowledge. -
So, anyone who regularly uses the IRC channel knows that a lot of new users log in and then log out if nobody says anything immediately. The average waiting time seems to be about 1 minute. So, why don't we have a cometition to see who can find the most impatient IRC user. i'll start, and its going to be a tough one to beat. Username: geistkiesel Join time: 11:36:32 10/07/09 (GMT) Quit time: 11:36:49 10/07/09 (GMT) Total time in the chat: 17 seconds. answers should be in a similar format so we can look at the logs to verify. maybe some of the people we name and shame will come back on and stick around for a while.

Expanding universe versus galactic collision
insane_alien replied to buzzinfinity's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
space is expanding everywhere. its just that local forces are able to overcome the pseudo force generated by the expansion. in your fingernail, the electromagnetic bonds between molecules hold you together. in the solar system, galaxy and galactic clusters, it is gravity. there is no hard and fast boundary, just a gradual change of dominant forces. -
what? have you ever even seen a magnet before? you will still end up with a dipole sphere, if you don't believe me you are welcome to try it yourself. i have several compasses with symmetric needles, infact, i don't have any with nonsymmetric needles. and using the old trick of turning a sewing needle into a compass i can make the heavier end go north or south without much trouble. you can do this to. no really, go try it and realise how much bull**** you are spouting. link, i want to read the experiment and possibly try it myself. not sure how this follows. you can just say thus and make it so. ...what ... i think you need diagrams for clarity. this information is already part of your post, stop posting it, it gets annoying.
-
you will not make a magnetic monopole this way, you will end up with a dipole spherical magnet. as it is a dipole the field strength will decrease with proportion to the cube of distance while gravity strength decreases with the square of distance. they are not fundementally the same, they are fundementally different in their action.

you'll have a greater concentration of formaldehyde in your system after a night of heavy drinking than you'd get from a vaccine. put simply, do you A/ inject a cocktail of chemicals that will have little if any risk due to low concentration and one off exposure. or B/ risk potentially life threatening and/or permanently crippling diseases. also, that site you linked to rates baking soda as a chemical hazard. and links to material safety data sheets(MSDS). the average person would run a mile from anything after reading a MSDS, they are notorious for appearing to overestimate risks drastically. examples include respirators gloves and goggles for handling table salt, gloves and goggles for water and IIRC you should avoid the inhalation of oxygen according to them. of course, these precautions are silly in normal day-to-day use of such chemicals but they can be appropriate under certain conditions which the MSDS doesn't list. salt can cause skin, eye and lung irritation if you are handling it constantly(say working in a salt mine) long and constant exposure to water can cause your skin to rot and damage your eyes(but this is uncommon even among divers as it takes days of this without being dried off inbetween) and oxygen is quite toxic at higher concentrations than atmospheric and can potentially kill you in hours. vaccines are safe, if they weren't we would have noticed since they have been in use for over a century.

i get this too. i think it is possibly interference as with the speckle pattern but i have found no references for this so cannot be sure. i'll be following this thread to see where it leads.

sounds like it might have become infected. go see a doctor.
