  1. DrDNA, gas turbine. actually. it used a mini jet engine supposedly. the actual car used in reality though used a good old otto engine.
  2. i would have went francis turbine but that probably wouldn't work so well at such a small scale. attaching a nozzle to your water jet would improve energy recovery by giving the water more momentum. try to minimized the friction on the turbine shaft, it whould be able to spin very freely when it isn't connected to the generator.
  3. only the human part. but luckily that is easily replaced by a machine. doesn't even need that much intelligence either. you can often replace humans with a large rock and nobody would notice the difference.

    monomers

monomers don't need to be organic at all. although you'd be hard pressed to find many inorganic ones, silene(silicon analogue of ethene) would be one. and i'm pretty sure sulphur can form chains. organic means containing carbon although not all things that contain carbon are organic. simple is a bit of a vague term, if the molecule involves secondary structure then it definitely isn't simple. IIRC simple extends to a medium length chain with a few branches and/or functional groups attached. macro molecules are typically proteins or large lattices such as diamond or graphite along with extremely long chain hydrocarbons like plastics. rule of thumb would be if its molecular weight is a few thousand daltons then its probably macro.
  5. My own rules on doing stuff with potentially dangerous substances(explosion hazard in this case) is do them outside, even if the operation is percieved as safe. The thought process should follow the lines of 1/ For some unknown reason reality has contradicted the sheer force of my awesomeness and the damn thing is on fire(or whatever the worst case scenario is for whatever you are dealing with), what are the consequences of this. 2/ If the answer of this is, explosion, fireball, noxious fumes, sprays stuff everywhere etc etc then do it outside.

only people with special priviledges get custom titles (mods, admin, experts etc.)
  7. you messed up your unit conversions. how can 2.2 lbs of aluminium be cheaper than 1 lbs $1.30 per kilogram
  8. all, including the none option have been worshipped as gods including a few others. thhat does make them gods, however, this bears no relevance to the question 'does god exist?' which i think is the question iNow and John are answering. personally, i don't believe in a god of any shape or form.
  9. you'd end up with N2 CO2/CO and H2O anyway
  10. does gparted pick it up at all? its entirely possible that it has died.
  11. don't accuse member of something people can clearly see they did not do. there wasn't a single bit of 'bad' language there at all. he only aknowledged that he is free to leave the discussion at his discretion but wishes to remain for the time being and reiterated his request for the proofs that you offered earlier in the thread. I second his request for proof and will remind you that if you fail to provide said proof that you will be in breach of the rules to which you agreed when you signed up for this forum and may move the moderators to remove your right to continue this discussion and access these forums either temporarily or permanently.
  12. probably because i am not carrying out research in this field. and am unlikely to ever carry out research in this field. i do not know the enzyme pathways all i know is that it takes alkanes and uses them as a carbon source for making cell material and energy and that it was genetically engineered somewhere(germany i think). and i am unaware of any reversibility of this. i'm pretty sure that it is fairly irreversible, enzyme or no enzyme.
  13. did i say they were grown on sugars? no. you can grow them on pretty much any organic waste, i'm currently writing up specs for an aerobic digester to handle the effluent stream of guess what? an ethylene plant. the effluent stream mainly consists of longer chain hydrocarbons that didn't get converted C4-9 along with water, and other impurities. no sugars involved except in the innoculate. the bacteria involved(i'm not sure of the name as someone better versed in biology than me is handling that, but she assures me it exists) was initially grown on a sugar medium and was adapted to digest alcohols before finally moving onto alkanes via a alcohol/alkane mix. the end product is a bacteria that can digest alkanes with no problems. just need to give it the right supplements to keep it alive and ensure adequate dilution(addition of emulsifiers so the alkanes don't seperate out before anyone thinks i'm claiming alkanes and water are miscible). but it handles 300g/m^3 fine. This is a hypothetical project though and it will never be built but the mechanism is there.
  14. it already does, happens all the time in waste treatment plants albeit with more digestible hydrocarbons but the bacteria used first adapt a tolerance to the presence of the hydrocarbons and then theyend up using it as a carbon source for cell material and energy. so, after an earthquake and several millions of gallons of crude bubble up from the sea floor something will end up feasting on it. of course on land it is somewhat harder to do as the concentration is immense
  15. bacterial digestion? geological activity would likely bring it to the surface at some point where bacteria could get access to it.
  16. google borked, it was listing every sight as being dangerous to your computer including if you googled google.
  17. i think you overestimate the amount of nuclear wast fissioning eveything we can would produce. also, there is speculation on running fission waste around fusion reactors. not only to block the hefty amount of neutrons fusion produces but to get some useful energy out of it and transmute the waste into stable isotopes.
  18. its actually really easy, we just have to look at the oklo site. natural nuclear reactor, more nuclear waste than we'd produce in 100 years if we fully switched to nuclear for EVERYTHING including mobile phones and stuff no special containment, full contact with groundwater and.... safe! step 1/ make cavern deep in mountain/geologically safe area 2/ line with concrete 3/ fill with waste 4/ seal it up and make it really obvious going in there would be a fatal idea. a half kilometer of concrete in the access tunnel should do.
  19. the liquid wast produced by the machine will make an exceptional beer.
  20. graphing calculators are used in scientific contexts all the time. i use one. and you are allowed to use them. they just have to be checked for stored information upon entering an exam. they are extremely useful tools. and you couldn't use one if you didn't know mathematical rules.
  21. it was hydrogen iirc.
  22. maybe try a humidifier, if the air is humid you are less likely to build up significant charge.
  23. there is no requirement for a belief to be reasonable for people to act upon it. believeing that medicine does not work despite the frankly astounding amount of evidence that it does IS unreasonable. just as the belief the sky yellow with luminous green polka dots would be considered unreasonable. medicine does not require belief as there is plenty of evidence for it, it trancends the problem of belief entirely.
  24. nobody likes big 20 acre radiators that make it uncomfortable warm and windy due to convection currents in their back garden.
  25. yes because they should be allowed to prevent medical attention getting to anyone because of their religious beliefs. perfect sense. we aren't talking about a cure, she wasn't cured(except in a really morbid sense as she techinically no longer has diabetes) but we were talking about a treatment that would have allowed her to live a healthy and normal life. not die with parents refusing to get help until it was already far too late. grieving parents who LET THEIR DAUGHTER DIE! do not forget that part. what you do to enforce it is if you get a report in from someone where they suspect a child/otherwise incapable person need medical attention and it is not being sought by people caring for them then you send out a doctor and if it is necessary, take them into care.
