yes but you are arguing that a photon is the smallest unit of energy. this is clearly not true as photons can have a vast spectrum of energies. for instance if i have an electron(mass energy equivalence of ~500keV) and a 1MeV then clearly the photon has more energy than the electron. this is the point klaynos is trying to make. ...well he did make it, you just never picked up on it.

some of the science on the discovery channel just makes me cringe. especially if its about some chemical process on 'how do they do it?' i realise they are short on time but it can be simplified quite far without being utterly meaningless.

i think you need an energy density of 1MJ per cubic centimeter to get plasma formation. once it starts it should be able to be maintained with less lasers as the plasma will absorb a significant amount of energy from the beams. also, pet peeve of mine, LASER(Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation) not 'lazer'.

so what has this got to do with gravity waves? and not having enough time isn't an excuse you can compose your reply in a word processor(or even notepad) over a period of days and just copy paste the final result. we are patient, we can wait.

foam covered lead balls. the lead will allow you to build up kinetic energy and the foam will keep the collisions inelastic. it will be particularly good at producing heat(good as in efficient in transforming kinetic to heat).

global warming: salvaging fact from heaps of BS

you do know that Capn can see the IP address you posted from in the logs right? i'm assuming it is the same otherwise he would not have have said it. -
Site Claiming to Sell Parallel Universes - Based on Genuine Science?
insane_alien replied to mj_495's topic in The Lounge
only on a vague and wrong drastic oversimplification of real science. what they are actually selling is a bit of paper saying you own something that is not only un-ownable but you will never be able to interact with, ever. -
Most cost effective way to produce H2 gas
insane_alien replied to San2006's topic in Inorganic Chemistry
what sort of scale? if i was to design a plant to generate H2 for lab scale it would be very different to the process for industrial scale production. -
how does an object actually achieve motion?
insane_alien replied to paul's topic in Classical Physics
in newtons third law, the reaction force is not on the same object. so, in the overall syystem the forces are balanced but if you only look at the forces on the object of concern then the forces are unbalanced. -
help me with this evolution experiment idea
insane_alien replied to drdanger's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
i think you mean 'its not speciation...' evolution occurs everytime there is reproduction. -

you can get HCl from most hardware stores. its sold under the name 'muriatic acid' -
have the search and rescue team emerged from your sideburns yet or are they still MIA

Can faced insulation in a wall be double layered?
insane_alien replied to iNow's topic in Engineering
should be fine, the vapour barrier sandwiched in the middle will just sit there not doing much other than providing a tiny bit of insulating effect and the new vapour barrier will become the one that actually stops the moisture. thats about it really. its all very inert so i don't think you'll suddenly cause a rift in the space time continuum or cause cats to chase dogs and hamsters to take over the world or anything. -
because that is the value it tends towards when it approaches 4

and remember to dig up the soil every time you start growing a new batch so you mop up the arsenic into some of the deeper soil. this will make it less likely that future crops will contain elevated levels of arsenic. the quicker route, would be to skim the topsoil off and buy new topsoil. but that is likely to be expensive.

last one of those i took said i should become an accountant. that is my idea of hell. no chemicals, all maths, repetetive and not very many problems to solve. i'll believe in creationism before i become an accountant

according to http://www.bgs.ac.uk/britainbeneath/land_arsenic.html the guideline value is 20 mg /kg of 20 parts per million. growing stuff is fine but i wouldn't recommend eating them. i don't think dust would be too much of an issue. if its dusty just dampen the ground with a hose.

i would imagine the introduction would be describing the situations circumstances.

how do the atoms/molecules in a solid stick together?
insane_alien replied to paul's topic in Physics
this would be the ionic bonding i mentioned in my post. there is nothing as exotic as the electro weak force here. that only occurs in high energy physics. much higher than anything you will encounter outside a particle accelerator or supernova. that is the end of it, you are over complicating things. -

how do the atoms/molecules in a solid stick together?
insane_alien replied to paul's topic in Physics
gilded has it. its all electrostatic forces. there are a few types of bond that are different. 1/van der waals attraction. not really a bond just a weak force of attraction between the atoms but can be enough to cause the substance to solidify. 2/ covalent lattice(diamonds are an example of this) can be very very strong, infact the hardest subsance on earth has this type of bond keeps it solid to very high temperatures. caused by the atoms sharing electrons in covalent bonds. 3/ Ionic lattice, again, very strong bonds, typically high melting points caused by electrostatic attraction of oppositle charged ions. basically van der waals on steroids. 4/ metallic bonding. electrons become delocalised and hop from atom to atom freely. -
it doesn't work. there have been absolutely no medical studies that have concluded that this works. only people who sell the things claim it works but offer no proof, ever.

well thats how you find out the heat of reaction. what you need to do is either: 1/ go look up the heats of formation on the net or 2/ go look up the heats of formation in a book. the choice is yours.

membrane seperators do not need to be fragile. for instance, you can even make a hollow fibre seperator flexible enough to tie into knots(assuming its long enough) and still have it function fine. its perfectly shock proof(okay, not totally, but if its going to damage it then it will probably do the car in anyway.)
