nitrogen only has 2 electrons in its first electron shell(as this is all that will fit in the first one.) there are 5 in the second shell and to be stable it 'needs' to gain 3 electrons. as there are only 2 electrons to fit in the first shell(of any atom) and hydrogen has 1 it needs to gain another to be stable. so, the nitrogen wants to share 3 and hydrogen wants to share for 1. as you have 3 hydrogens, everything is good. it is a little more complicated than this in reality but from the sound of your post i don't think you have covered orbitals(s,p,d,f orbitals) yet.

well you could have a spherical shell of steel and pump all the air out of it and it will float. and you could go out in the ocean with an empty hull and it'll float. you can try this with a glass with a heavyish base. if you need air trapped for it to float then the glass should not be able to float whn you sit it in water the right way up. same thing happens with steel or any other material denser than water.

How are scientific theories produced
insane_alien replied to Effie's topic in Modern and Theoretical Physics
pioneer i have never seen you come up with a theory once. you have speculations and almost without fail they fall flat on their face before the first hurdle. the ones that do make it off the starting blocks usually fall flat soon after. -
do you mean like ice cores? i think we're going to need to know more about exactly what you want it to do for us to help you.

flicking through my junk box on my msn email(this gets so much spam and it doesn't get caught by the filters i have abandoned it. if you send me an email to that account i will not get it.) i noticed some amazingly awesome names. i think we should have a contest to see who is getting spam with the most interestingly named bots . my 3 nominations are: 1/ Xanthia Barbosa (trying to sell viagra) 2/ Dr. Song Lee (trying to hook me up with a kenyan kings millions of dollars and his daughters, never had this spam before, i think the name sounds pretty cool) 3/Julio Fernando (apparently, the 'leader of the FBI' claiming that unless i send him $150000 i will be taken from my little new jersey home* and locked up forever.) *i live in scotland, with my parents until my financial situation improves. i have never been to new jersey and the only part of the states i have been to is las vegas, i do not plan on owning property there unless my career leads me there in the future, which is unlikely.

temperature is a scalar quantity, it does not have direction. temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of molecules in the substance. it is analogous to voltage in an electrical system. voltage does not have direction but current(heat) does.

Pete, its a CO2 canister, there will be a bit of liquid CO2 in equilibrium with vapour in the tank, if you reduce the pressure by firing a shot some of the liquid CO2 will evapourate untill the pressure is constant again. the pressure will stay roughly the same until all the CO2 has boiled off then it will start falling. this equilibrium however, is quite temperature dependant, even a few degrees can significantly alter the pressure.

you can't because it is not. counter examples include n=1 and well, any number except infinity your missing some limits.

whether you are fond of the idea of genetics determining your sexuality or not it is folly to say that they do not play a significant role as this can and has been proven scientifically. but that is to say that it is not the only factor and it is possible to override it.

thats what i was talking about. hence my use of the word intrinsic.

I'm ready to tell you my secret now...I see dumb people

thats the ONLY reason i go to the mall. not entirely sure what else there is to do there. the only other use i can think of is as an impromptu fortress when the zombie uprising happens. -
severian said they have intrinisic angular momentum, he did NOT say that the angular momentum had to be non-zero. the higgs boson is a spin zero particle(if it exists which is probable)

i done it to illustrate a point, i just used iron as an example, i used it because it is a common resource that is a little more commonplace than stuff like platinum, dysprosium or other rare metals. you could apply it to any particular element if you so desire. you can't have just missed the point, i think this is a deliberate strawman. also, there may be 10 trillion tonnes of lead but how much of that is extractable? and not all of it will be, below a certain concentration it is just not feasible to extract any more. like the million or so tonnes in the ocean, 1/ thats a tiny amount of lead, 2/ you have to pump ALL THE OCEANS through your extraction plant. several times as well as your waste water will dilute the remaining lead. now who is using ridiculous scenarios? nope, it means it is currently being utilised. unavailable for use because it already HAS a use. to use it for something else would mean destroying what it is being used for. it doesn't matter how well you can extract the substance, its how much of it is actually there, and its a finite amount. -
it can have an intrinsic angular momentum of zero. you were the one who added in that limit from who knows where.

this is because the projector projects the colours seperately. there will be the blue fram the green frame and the red frame (not necessarily in that order though) when you blink really fast what your doing is creating a strobe effect which can allow you to see things that are too quick for you to see if you keep your eyes open as it gets mixed in with what is happening next.

skeptic, when we talk of a resource as being depleted, we do not mean it has simply vanished, we mean that it is tied up in a bit of technology that is used. for instance, say we went on a mega building spree and ended up using all the iron for structures. this iron is still there, but it is no longer available as a resource as we are using it all at that moment in time. on a smaller scale so it is easier to understand, say you are a teacher of a class of 30 kids, you're letting them draw for a while so you can have a sneaky nap, but wait! the box of crayons only has 25 in it. according to you we can just get more crayons from the box because they don't disappear. but the thing is, they didn't disappear, they were all in use. -
look up electrohydrodynamic thrusters (EHD thrusters). very cool to play around with, highly impractical to use on a large scale.

1/ you don't need to capitalise every word. 2/ you drank enough so that the next day you were likely still very drunk, i have been in this situation several times its not nice but you just have to deal with it. 3/ the tiredness, hangover(which i imagine was quite intense) and residual ethanol and ethanal in your system likely caused the hallucinations. get a good nights sleep, lay off the booze for a while and try not to think to much and you'll be fine. 4/ leave the heavy drinking till AFTER exams.

these things already exist and have been used in several makes of car. (all if you include the testing of the engines during the design phase.) venturi meters are particularly good at his as the have no moving parts and it is a simple translation from pressure to temperature. pitot tubes could also be used but would impede flow slightly more.

typically there is the turbine which is a really really big moving part.

and that would be more effective how? -
Which orifice is more prone to STDs??
insane_alien replied to atomXY's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
bout the same iirc, you still have contact of bodily fluids and potentially direct access to the blood stream. although, with oral there is a slight chance that the saliva will deform the bacteria/virus enough to render it at least less effective. -
why would 3 genders be wrong? most species only have one(which makes the concept of gender useless for them), a percentage of species have 2(us humans included) and some of those can swap or be both at the same time. a third one would be no less wrong although would be interesting to see what role the third gender would make. also, three genders is not a requirement for an organism with three legs.
