  1. i use both pretty frequently, desktop for powerhundgry stuff and laptop for nearly everything else.
  2. see, i've found its only utter wankers that call alcoholism and depression diseases. people who have no ****ing idea what the hell they're on aboot. alcoholism is an addiction and depression is a mental disorder AT BEST. anyonw who says other wise doesnae have a bloody clue.
  3. Capn, never assume its a hydrocarbon. it could be anything until proven otherwise. assuming is a bad habit to get into. in fact, doing a quick back of the hand calculation, it is impossible for it to be carbon as you would need 2/3 of a carbon atom. when you have the moles of hydrogen, work out how many are in the molecule. the go through the elements and find which one fits. Additional, just worked it out, the formula will seem wrong but its actually a molecule and it has a whole number of atoms. Further additional: actually, there are multiple compounds it could be i'd need to know the other product. Okay, i'd go with the more plausible sounding one. meaning the one you've probably seen before.
  4. and as she has been diagnosed she is obviously seeing a doctor which will improve her chances a lot more than what you spouted.
  5. i'd ignore pioneer if i were you, he tends to live in his own little world where reality need not apply.
  6. the mass on the table still has to accelerate doesn't it? say m is 1kg and g is 10ms^-2 1kg is over the edge of the table so can be accelerated by gravity. this means we have a force of 10 newtons. BUT this 10 newtons has to accelerate 2 kg of mass. then using F=ma we see an acceleration of 5m/s.
  7. i think you are reading way way too much into this. whether you like it or not there do tend to be differences in humans depending on where they came from. this is due to evolution. the most obvious product of this is skin colour. lots of melanin is good in hot sunny climates such as those found in africa but sucks in europe as you wouldn't get as much vitamin D. now, on the topic of mixed race babies, there are 3 scenarios which were mentioned in the OP, either 1/the babies skin is dark 2/ the babies skin is light 3/ the babies skin is a medium. all three of these have been observed in babies with parents of different race. it is an interesting question and is a valid line of inquiry. it is not being derrogatory to either skin colour nor does it imply that either one is 'lesser' than the other.
  8. the acceleration is half of the gravitational acceleration as gravity only applies an accelerating force to the mass hanging off the edge of the table. and as this has to accelerate the mass on the table in order to move we have a force F acting on 2 masses so the acceleration will be half what it would be if the block was just dropped. assuming the masses are equal of course. in the above scenario i suspect g is 10ms^-2
  9. its possible but very very improbable and will not be reached anytime soon. it will only occur if we have models that perfectly reflect reality and every phenomenon ever. the models we have now do fine for a wide range of conditions but there are many where they become increasingly bad at reflecting reality.
  10. not really, just because boron can form a buckyball like structure doesn't mean it is versatile enough to replace carbon in biochemistry. for instance, it does not form long chains like carbon which are pretty much essential for fats, proteins and other chemicals. carbon forms the base of millions more compounds than any other element.
  11. you seem to think there is some sort of racist intent where we are discriminating against someone of particular skin colour. it is not so. that would be a bit like calling discussion about whether a baby is going to be a boy or a girl sexist.
  12. procrastination is more of a bad habit than an unhealthy one.
  13. i tend to use white on a dark blue background(with a slight shade gradient). it seems to be the standard around my uni and it is quite readable.
  14. tazers only have a temporary effect, unless of course you have a condition that could make you vulnerable such as a weak heart. but tazers are not applied directly to the heart or brain and if they are then they certainly be fatal. There are some therapies which involve direct electrical stimulus of the brain, these are pretty risky as are all surgeries on the brain as you have to get it just right.
  15. the body reacts badly to being in contact with it. it is applied in the same context as lactose intolerance.
  16. throng, i suggest you stop wasting time on this and go learn some proper science.
  17. if this is applied to blood, fine. i suspect it would have quite severe negative effects if applied somewhere electrically sensitive though. examples being the nerves, heart and especially the brain.
  18. is it not? oh. oopsie
  19. exactly, if the sightings were in a very unaccessible area such as the middle of the brazillian rain forest or whatever then i could understand the lack of evidence but it is supposed to exist across the entire north american continent. and given americans penchant for hunting its not as if there are vast tracts of uncharted lands never set foot upon be humans before.
  20. 1) it is not a constant ration, it is asymptotic to v=c 2) again asymptotic but to escape velocity =c this time. 3) no, relativistic mass is a bad concept as it makes you think about things the wrong way. you will not notice any mass increase when you are whizzing along at 0.9999c 4)heisenberg uncertainty only really applies on the quantum scale. it basically says that if you measure the position exactly then you will have no idea what the particles momentum is and if you measure the momentum exactly then you will have no idea WHERE it is.
  21. baby astronaut, you are assuming a prefered reference frame. such a thing does not exist.
  22. i'll drink to that.
  23. I_Pwn_Crackpots, YDOAPS didn't change what he wrote otherwise there would be an edit tag on it. and he is right, special relativity causes things to contract in the direction of motion not perpendicular to that. so a spinning circle would stay the same radius but have a contracted circumference.
  24. a penny is copper plated steel. IIRC a penny would be worth just over a penny as scrap.
  25. if its on the onion, read it as a joke because thats exactly what it is. in this case it is taking a satirical look at those who flock to stains of jesus, the virgin mary or whatever icon of the week.
