the scales were likely calibrated at room temperature. thermal expansion can cause them to give false readings especially if you are taking very accurate measurements.

there are more than hundreds. there is no definite limit on the number of proteins that can exist in theory but practical limitations would come into play and not all possible proteins are useful.

I live in an area where there are a number of farms(my best friend as a kid lived on a farm, dairy as well) and i have done a study on the processing of milk and, well there is nothing much to it appart from pasteurising and possibly skimming if you want to remove the fats. this will cause some degradation of the proteins in the milk and will lead to a slightly different taste but it does not substantially change the nutritional value of the milk. you will still be able to absorb all the nutrients you would if you were drinking it straight from the udders of the cow.

that made no sense at all and doesn't describe proteins either.

Furthest redshift possible?
insane_alien replied to Baby Astronaut's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
well, i don't know the exact number but i would imagine it would be impossible to have a wavelength smaller than the plank length but before that it is a practical limit as the photon will split up via electron-positron annihilation. -
so use three lines. one line representing Carbon=3 another for Carbon=7 and so on.

Microwaves melt your organs?!?!
insane_alien replied to christiannnna's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
if his organs do not contain water then he has got more to worry about than some microwaves. Have you got a source for this, the microwaves do not have the energy to affect DNA which would cause cancer and any sterility would be temporary as it would only be able to halt sperm production due to the increased temperature.(although this is not to say shoving your testicles in a microwave is a good idea or effective method of contraception) -
Furthest redshift possible?
insane_alien replied to Baby Astronaut's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
yes but there are other limits to it as well that will keep the photons at a much lower energy. a photon of high enough energy can turn into an electron-positron pair which will promptly annihilate and result in two photons of lesser energy. -
Furthest redshift possible?
insane_alien replied to Baby Astronaut's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
well, the wavelength can't get any bigger than the universe so i guess that imposes a physical limit on it. -
planes could carry more overall as it is trivial for them to fly back to base, load up with more and get back in in a few hours.

Research Poll: Public Support for a Nuclear Powered Aeroplane
insane_alien replied to dawson300's topic in The Lounge
it might not have been as bad. if the reactor didn't rupture(as i hope it would have been engineered to survive a crash) then there wouldn't have been a massive release of radiation and there wouldn't have been massive fires. the building could have still been standing as they were designed(and did) survive direct plane impacts. it was just the extended fires on a weakened structure that caused the collapse. -
that would have the opposite effect.hurricanes are like heat engines, increase the temperature difference and increase the power of it. the top is the cold part so cooling that down will just make it stonger. you want to cool down the hot bit which is at the bottom.

Research Poll: Public Support for a Nuclear Powered Aeroplane
insane_alien replied to dawson300's topic in The Lounge
the reactor is going to have to undergo some serious crash testing before i would be comfortable having thousands of them flying around(especially as i live only a few miles from an airport and i'm pretty near the flight path) and i'm talking no release of radioactive material even if its a vertical powered dive from 30000ft and it must be able to sustain heft damage from explosives. now, if we could get a fusion reactor in there... unfortunately that doesn't look as if it will be feasible in the expected timescale. and nuclear reactors tend to resist being made small nad still output masses of power. i think if you have a nuclear powered plane then you're going to have to sacrifice a whole load of cargo/passenger space. -
Space & Time are non- equiva substances?
insane_alien replied to Yuri Danoyan's topic in Modern and Theoretical Physics
3 banana monsters minus a small shrew. makes about as much sense as the rest of this thread. -
or we could get a fleet of planes to spray liquid nitrogen around the lower levels of the hurricane.

Is the earth pulled around by the moon?
insane_alien replied to zensunni's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
no, but half the planet will be unable to see the moon due to the earth. but that half of the planet will be in daylight anyway. -

yeah, i meant kook. i was thinking of what to make for dinner.(ended up settling on ordering a chicken chow mein and some ribs). -
doesn't san diego have an equivalent of 'the yellow pages'(a phone book with the numbers of various businesses, contractors and so on) and as mooey said, google is your friend. just search 'San Diego xxxxxx Contractor'

take it you've just been to see a psychiatrist then? there could be a thousand and one reasons ranging from 'he kept glancing at the clock because he was wishing the session was over so he could go pee' to 'the psychiatrist himself was driven insane and was staring at a leprechaun telling him to set the patient on fire.' i think you are reading waaaayyyyy to much into it.

absolutely nothing but its been a while since we've had a real cook. let us have our fun. -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moment_of_inertia <read that. its wikipedia but this article is accurate. go learn some ACTUAL physics. -

insane_alien replied to voodoochile's topic in The Lounge
qhat exactly do you think 'moment of inertia' means? because i have a feeling that what you think it means and what it actually means are two very different things. -
nuclear blasts would likely just heat the water up putting more energy into the system and resulting in a stronger hurricane. i'm not entirely sure a nuke would have much of an effect at all.

The Official "Introduce Yourself" Thread
insane_alien replied to Radical Edward's topic in The Lounge
If my higher exam results came out different i would have been there studying chemistry, actually, i probably would have graduated by now. anyway, i'm over at strathclyde. and we need more scots on here. -

the onus is on you to prove yourself right. thats how science works.
