As we all know, YT2095 and his wife are having another spawn of satan kid. And I think its once again time we folks here at SFN test our powers of prediction and have a bet on whether its going to be a boy or a girl. GO!

wow, that estimation is as dodgy as hell. thats like if i look at my street. macdonald is the most common name being about 15% of the people on my street have macdonald as a last name. that doesn't mean i can then extrapolate that 15% of the world have the last name macdonald. can you post the data you used to derive this?

take it hannah wasn't asking enough chemistry questions then? congratulations!
-
so how did you come to this estimation? show us the method.
-
and what is your reference on that? is anything more than 'holy crap this number just fell out of my ass, might as well use it'
-
well, that isn't but the fact that bigfoot's species is so rare that it means they'd be so inbred they would be little more than drooling vegetables. evolution does not favour small populations very well at all.

i think in these modern times where nearly everyone has net access it more comes down to: Do you want your child to learn of sex via a class that tells it like it is or the internet? having sat through a sex -ed class in my youth as well as browsing some of the dodgier areas of the web i'd rather a kid learned of sex in a class at school than the web.

we're not the leading race of animals by most methods of measuring it. infact, i think only in technology do we come out on top. we're not the most populous, we're not the most widespread, we don't have the most biomass, we have a narrow range of conditions in which we can survive without technology we die pretty easily we don't affect the climate the most and so on.

well, it can't answer the question if it does not know the answer or didn't understand the question. we will strive to answer the question but it may be that it is impossible.

Microwaves melt your organs?!?!
insane_alien replied to christiannnna's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
microwaves are pretty well shielded. as long as you don't rig it so you can open the door while it is still working then it won't do anything to you. you get more microwave exposure from microwaves produced purely by blackbody thermal emission that from the magnetron in your microwave. -
well, you can wait till you get the new shinier computer and just try out ubuntu from the CD. its the same CD you install it off of. you'll have access to everything you would if you installed it with only 2 things that are not ideal. 1/ CD drives are SLOW compared to a harddrive, performance will NOT be spectacular(although there are some hacks to cache the whole CD in RAM which makes it much faster) 2/ as the system is on readonly media, any changes you make will be wiped upon rebooting.

crosslinking between the proteins. its just difficult to get the right amount and type of crosslinking.

you could install a proxy to limit bandwidth but the cheap commodity routers most people have do not have traffic shaping. if your router is compatible with dd-wrt(or whatever its called, i can't remember exactly) you may be able to do it at the router.

it doesn't get the forum because there isn't enough demand for it. if there were more demand then it would get its own forum.

so basically you want to make a carbon nanotube cylinder and inflate it with helium for structural rigidity? i'm not so sure this will work very well compared to the counterbalanced ribbon of nanotubes that most scientists think would be somehwere around feasible. i mean for the first few kilometers, perhaps even tens of kilometers, it should be fine but the pressure required to keep it up will rise roughly exponentially as the pressure at the bottom will be FAR higher than the pressure at the top.

Look My Hand Is In the Wall....
insane_alien replied to Catharsis's topic in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
nope, purely electrons. pauli exclusion principle does a lot for repelling other atoms. it basically says two electrons of the same spin cannot occupy the same orbital and so on. although, with metals the can sort of join on like you say, its called cold welding but it will only happen if you produce the metals in a vacuum or inert atmosphere and touch them together in a similar environment. this doesn't happen normally because a small chemically inert oxide layer forms when it is in the atmosphere. -
Look My Hand Is In the Wall....
insane_alien replied to Catharsis's topic in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
but it does actually get close enough. for pure electrostatic repulsion. thats what it is. and if you want to get a bit more advanced, the pressure is formed because you deform the orbitals slightly. -
base of operations for my evil empire. i'll need some space for my minions.

basically, its a ribbon of an ultrastrong material(called scrith) around a star that is able to support life on the inside surface due to it having massive mountains at the edges to hold the air in and spinning at some 700km/sec for gravity. it also has the ability to shoot x-ray laser beams from the sun.

Iodine solution that doesn't show starch...
insane_alien replied to Meldream's topic in Homework Help
the solution is simple. the amylase converted all the starch available. or at least to the extent that it is no longer visually detectable by iodine solution. -
err, traveler, it would be wise to go and learn what you are talking about before you continue to make yourself look rather foolish.

perhaps because pi is one number. it is the ratio between the circumference and the diameter of a circle in the euclidean plane. that is, a hypothetical construct where it is impossible for it to change with radius. anything else is not pi.

Look My Hand Is In the Wall....
insane_alien replied to Catharsis's topic in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
to do that your hand would have to chemically react with the wall. as people would likely complain if they melded to the wall every time they touched it we tend to not use materials where that would happen. -
i want the ringworld from the novel of the same name
