the compression is not so great as ozone says, pressures experienced are usually on the orger of a few million atmospheres though. but it is the density that is increased to cause criticality by lowering the critical mass which depends on density.

well, mostly yes, but there will always be some other reaction. with NI3 some nitrates will be formed(not much but a little) and the same with others. Again this depends on the conditions underwhich decomposition occurs.

How much research experience did you have going into college?
insane_alien replied to CDarwin's topic in Science Education
closest i had was a chemistry project at the end of sixth year(my last year in highschool) when i analyzed the properties of wines. so pretty much bugger all. you don't need any experience going in, but it would be a good thing if you asked your lecturers if they need a hand with their research. looks good on a CV. -
and you get to tinker with nuclear reactors?
-
a balckbody is a perfect absorber and emitter. YDOAPS
-
the reactor walls would absorb the neutrons. and there can be internal sheilding as well.
-
tungsten should do. used in filament bulbs the world over.

Write The Correct Name Of The Following Formulas!
insane_alien replied to midsize D's topic in Homework Help
well, it is chemistry seeing as they are chemicals. do you know about valences at all? and there are two possible answers for the last one, were there any roman numerals along side the nickel part? -
Write The Correct Name Of The Following Formulas!
insane_alien replied to midsize D's topic in Homework Help
so, do you want the correct name (ie Sodium Cholride) or the formula (ie NaCl)? -
if it quacks like a duck... conciousness could be considered and emergent property of the chemical reactions taking place in our brains, this could be represented by an algorithm(infact, it has partially been in several models of neural tissues). if you played this algorithm through a computer instead of a chemical system, would it be conciousness? i'd say yes. HAL certainly had all the signs of being sentient, it could abstract, it had awareness through the ships sensors and cameras(like our nerves and eyes) it had the ability to control various parts of the ship (i'm afraid i can't do that dave) and it made desicions based on that data.

gold will likely just pass straight through your digestive system and get flushed down the toilet. if any at all got into your blood stream i would be surprised. that said, i've seen the 'gold powder' and it sure s hell doesn't look like gold. i'd need a sample to test but i'm sure my left nostril contains more gold. as for the whole ORMUS thing, its utter crap.

yep you got it.

yes, it would definitely have a high temperature from energy left over from its formation. but the extraordinarily high pressures would be sufficient to keep it solid. it would likely be a couple thousand kelvin, perhaps in the tens of thousands, depending on how old the planet is.
-
the impact that caused the extinction was taken to impact at roughly 45 degrees, the most likely angle. get your facts straight. i can't read french but from the picture/map you missed the impact point by over a thousand miles. we have images of the crater, what you indicated with the red arrow is not a crater, also even an impact at an angle would produce a circular crater, no a drawn out line. well, not unless is was very very low angle (1 degree or less)

there is no requirement for a solid core, the sun does not have a solid core. all that is required is that there is enough gravity present to keep the thing together. as gravitational attraction is independent of phase, this just requires you have a certain amount of stuff in roughly the same place.

just because there is a little gizmo on the site does not limit people from forming their own opinions. you don't HAVE to use it.

nope it is the absence of colour. white is the opposite with all the colours present. though it does depend on which definition of colour you use. certainly in the most widly used sense, black is a colour as in 'it's coloured black'. artists will tell you its a shade and scientists will say it is the absence of colour.

Why is Carbon instead of silicon, "the building block of life"

ah cracks in my biology showing through there. -
Why is Carbon instead of silicon, "the building block of life"
insane_alien replied to Dallin's topic in Homework Help
another thing to look up is the resipiration products, we breath out carbon dioxide, have a look at silicon dioxide(or through it *hint hint*) and see what problems could arise -
i'd be very surpised if it didn't it won't be very big in relation to the rest of the planet but probably about the size of earth.
-
i concur. its probably hollow not thatit would matter.

Why is Carbon instead of silicon, "the building block of life"
insane_alien replied to Dallin's topic in Homework Help
carbon was not made in the early slimes. it was made in the star that formed the nubula the solarsystem condensed out of. but basically what you are saying(more stable forms preffered) is correct, but for the wrong reasons. i would recommend you look up information on various silicon molecules that are similar to carbon based molecules(say silane instead of methane) and see what happens when they are exposed to air. then you'll know why silicon would be useless. -
haha i can see it too. PROOF THAT MARS IS COLONIZED BY HAPPY PIGS!!!!11one1!!!
