you mean europa, its mostly water, the inside is kept liquid by tidal forces from jupiter, the OP was reffering to a planet the size of jupiter but made of water.
-
it's possible, but highly unlikely and the core would likely be solid due to the pressure, wouldn't be normal ice but one of the high pressure variants.

it depends more on the decomposition products of the compound. if they are mostly gaseous then we will see an explosion(if the decomposition is fast). if they are liquids or solids or soluble in the local medium(say water) then we won't see an explosion. it also depends on the rate of decomosition, a fast decomp will more likely result in an explosion while a slow one might just seem to cause the compound to appear to evapourate. temperature, pressure, exposure to UV can all have an effect on the rate of the reaction but this will depend on the form of decomposition and the chemicals themselves.

no, but the force of gravity exceeds the 'force'(it is a pseudo force like centrifugal force in a rotating frame of reference). it is still there but the signal:noise ratio sucks.
-
it would depend on the reference frame. if you were in a frame where he was travelling at zero velocity then he would appear normally proportioned, if you were observing from a frame where he was going 99.99999% of c then he would appear 'flat'. like has been said before, it all depends on the reference frame, there is no absolute reference frame which you seem to be implying.

communicating with an extraterrestrial civilisation
insane_alien replied to JohnF's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
you learned how to speak as a baby yeah? you didn't get clues from other languages you just picked it up. this would basically be how it would work with spoken language or even written language. there are hints to what things mean and then you can build up a basic framework that will allow you to ask what words mean in the language in question and understand the description. after that it is easy. for written language, we could be given clues for their number system(the symbol followed by tally marks or something). i think if we are contacted by an alien civilization they will have experience at it. or at least will be smart enough to figure out something. i mean, we've figured out some of the 'language' of chimps and other primates by watching them. -
darkshade, please follow the rules about relpying to homework related threads. DONOT JSUT GIVE OUT THE ANSWER.

i spectacularly missed the chemical engineering option and hit other by accident. technically i will have a basic degree in it in a month or so.

expansion is way too small to notice.

inhaling any particulate is usually considered a bad thing. the reason tobacco smoke is given more lime light is because it is the most common form of smoke inhalation and it is completely voluntary(except in second hand smoke but this poses a minor risk compared to someone sucking it down directly).

i can't veiw the demo as i get a page load error but perhaps eric5 is saying they are the same size when the are traveling at the same velocity or if you measure from 2 different reference frames?
-
well, its a kind of resonance structure a bit like with benzene. and the orbitals can hybridize so the 8 electron rule doesn't hold.
-
darkshade, the whole point of the homework help guide is to point them in the right direction rather than give them the answer.

Evolution - is it Challengable?
insane_alien replied to Vexer's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
There is no singular theory of evolution anymore. Instead there are a whole range of theories dealing with genetics, mutations and selection which is called 'modern synthesis'. Darwins ideas were quite flawed and incomplete, though they were the best at the time. so, to answer our question, darwinian evolution has alread been challenged and it was found wanting and replaced/augmented. -
CERN's Black Hole that can eat the earth
insane_alien replied to CaptainPanic's topic in Quantum Theory
even if we do make a micro black hole, it is going to be travelling at over a thousand times earth escape velocity(and hundreds of times solar/galactic) escape velocity so we just turn the magnets off and its gone even if it doesn't evapourate. -
a long time as the chances of it hitting any particles and absorbing them is very small. once it gets bigger, say to a few micrometers across, then quite soon.

propane/butane is almost never stored at standard pressure. that would be innefficient and expensive.

Effect of Violent Videogames
insane_alien replied to Donut.Hole's topic in Psychiatry and Psychology
its just like a form of stress ball. i could argue stress balls are more violent as you are actually mutilating something rather than just pushing buttons. anyway all that aside, the point of either method, is to release the fury onto something that will not get hurt/retaliate or even care. its entire purpose is so you can do that. -
probably but not definitely. my brothers laptop came with vista sans wireless drivers. i still have no idea what wireless card it is except it works flawlessly with ubuntu.

Onespace, physics and mathematics have a very precise definition of a dimension. it has been used for hundreds of years. thousands actually. what you are trying to do is redefine 'dimension' to mean something totally different. In science, you just can't do this as it creates confusion. if you want to describe something different you use a new or at least different word. i'm not sure how you get a line of momentum. momentum is a vector. it is a 3 vector to be precise it has a magnitude in all three spatial dimensions(x,y,z). this magnitude might be zero in any particular dimension. also, space cannot be 2d. to define a point in space i need at least 3 coordinates(4 if it is moving wrt to the coordinate system and i want to mark where it will be at a particular time.) this means there are 4 dimensions. now, 4 does not equal two. so space cannot be 2d i don't know how matter could possibly be a dimension unto itself. it makes no sense at all with the definition of dimension in a scientific context.

well, first of all, jupiter would explode in pretty short order as its gravity is not strong enough for it to hold together. when the debris hits earth, the magnetic field will undergo rapid distortions which will cause problems with some electronic equipment. humanity would probably survive.

two strips of different metals,(say zinc and iron) put them in an electrolyte(iron chloride) and hey presto you have a cell, link a few up an you have a battery.

Natural way to grow taller than your potential height?
insane_alien replied to 6431hoho's topic in Medical Science
you're already taller than i am (169cm, 5ft 7in). i've had no problems with height. you'll almost definitely reach 6ft -
cerebral hemisphere control
insane_alien replied to michel_mr's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
i thin he's asking if there would be a benefit if the right side of the brain controled the right side of the body as opposed to the left. i'm not sure it would make much, if any difference.
