Where is Dark Matter?
insane_alien replied to GrandMasterK's topic in Modern and Theoretical Physics
amazing what people try to get away with. 1 too many episodes of stargate and startrek perhaps jack? -
well, the towers were actually designed to be able to do this from the way they were constructed (a central core and a shell) the core carried most of the weight and fell first. this had the effect of yanking the walls in. it should also be noted that the top of one of the towers hinged over as it fell. harldy neat and tidy. also, if you do the stress calculations, it would have been impossible for the non damaged sectors to let the building fall over on its side as the support would buckle long before the centre of gravity got outside the footprint of the building. as for WTC 7 it rotated significantly in its collapse and its collapse started at the bottom. thats why it looked so clean. but the coloumns did provide some resistance. even if you use the more wacky numbers for collapse thats are thrown up you get an acceleration of 6.something m/s/s. hardly freefall. also, the buildings did have redundancy but all this support was for a constant static load and a small amount of dynamic load from wind and people moving about. it was not designed to be able to withstand several thousand tonnes slamming into it. much like a sheet of paper can support a brick and you can move it around but if you drop it it plummets through the paper. it was a normal collapse. yeah, a gouge that took of 18 stories worth of corner, to around 40-50 feet inside the building and setting the rest of the place on fire. there is no evidence of an explosion. just structural failure due to weakened supports on a damaged sector. Oklahoma involved a bomb. thats why it had a massive debris spread. IT HAD EXPLOSIVES. not wtc7. never heard of that one. if this wasn't you i would have went into a rant about nutcases.

yeah open up the casing and give it a good rinse. then leave it to dry for a few days. that gets all the dissolved chemicals off it. thats what would short it out otherwise. after that it should* work fine. *insane_alien does not offer any guarantee with this statement. any injuries to any persons and/or damage to property incurred by following this advice are not attributable to insane_alien.

at most, use 12V. whats the mains voltage where you are 110VAC? not good for electrolysis. partly because the voltage is immense for the scale of what you are planning but mostly because AC will produce hydrogen and oxygen at both electrodes.

How does a photon gets its energy to travel at light speed?
insane_alien replied to Lekgolo555's topic in Quantum Theory
emphasis mine. it would also take infinite to achieve that speed as well. -
well, there's a whole bunch of quarks, gluons and electrons down there. its possible that they will eventually reach the surface through a volcano or something but far more likely when the sun blows up and major parts of the earth vapourize.
-
yes, some stars that have formed after the first wave of star formation (like our sun) will contain traces of heavier materials. but there is a difference in the level observed in supernovae and the level present in normal stars and star death. the question was fine. normal stars that formed in the first wave would contain nothing bigger than iron unless heavier elements fell into the star (which is possible if it travels through a supernova nebula.
-
we have also detected gold in the absorbtion(or emmission) spectra of supernovae indicating that this is the source. on normal star deaths this is absent.
-
well, you are. because maxwell and the rest of them made it quite clear that the speed of light is constant in all inertial frames. and, this is what has been observed. and, no disrespect to islam, but just because something is written in the quran does not make it true. we will need experimental evidence before the claim holds any water.

the cell will not over heat from an additional 0.27 volts. the 0.27 volts will go towards increasing the amperage. the size of the cell can have an effect on the rate of the production, for example two big plate electrodes will provide a higher rate as the resistance will be less and more current can flow compared to two wire electrodes. you don't technically need an electrolyte for this but if you must then use a bit of sodium hydroxide. this will not give off any gasses like sodium chloride would. and yes, there is heat generated because of resistance withing the cell as if it was part of a normal electric circuit. i suggest you read some stuff about basic electronics. it can be useful.

well, the earth is a box. the atmosphere can be considered a closed system with negligble mass transfer. in essence, this makes it a box.

Lists of compounds with the element in its formula...
insane_alien replied to MDJH's topic in Chemistry
ahh. the article i read must have been enhanced oxygen content. it seemed to alternate between 100%O2 and 'enhanced oxygen content' quite freely so i took them to mean the same. -

well, both ozone AND oxygen are toxic. if you put the oxygen level in your room up to 100% you would have irreversible lung damage after a few days and be dead in a few more. granted, ozone would kill you within the hour but it'll still kill you. -
mini radar system?

or get a mesh screen to stop them getting in in the first place.

it seems none of you have ever encountered chaos theory before. in a system where there are many many many factors say, the environment, small changes in one or more variables can be disasterous. take the oxygen catastrophe. eons ago when life was young. the atmosphere had nearly zero free oxygen. life started producing oxygen as a waste gas. life flourished and the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere rose. this lead to mass extinctions as a lot of plants and animals could no longer breathe. also, a whole load of iron precipitated out of the seas as it formed iron oxide(rust). enough species survived to form us oxygen breathing lifeforms. now, imagine the same thing but in reverse. with CO2 rising. that is what you are proposing to let happen.
-
CO2 IS a pollutant. natural or not. benzene is also natural. the earth is not sentient. it does not know anything. there is no such thing as natural and unnatural as everything we do is natural. we are part of nature. only thinking about now is a sure fire way to crap out the enviroment.

or any proper chemical name. reference:Dihydrogen monoxide -
well there are 6.6 billion molecules of DNA each of which would take a good chunk of a library to write out. then theres the rest of the organic molecules. proteins have really long chemical formulae and viruses. it will be possible when we have denser digital data storage and 1 exabyte is relatively cheap.

well, i'd be careful with that one as while it is covalent as a gas, when it is dissolved to form acid it gets ionized. -
and probably the most realistic. if you could 'stop' time like in other sci-fi's where the person who stopped time is still able to move about (take that guy in 'heroes' as an example) you would encounter problems such as being trapped by molecules in the air. breathing would be impossible. assuming you can move and can move objects then you would create an immense shockwave as the air you move out of your way would form an enormously high pressure area. possibly high pressure enough to leadto fusion.

i seen this one at my local train station wile waiting to go to uni. first i'll set the scene. i'm waiting in line to renew my zonecard(gets you unlimited travel with trains and buses over a number of zones for a few months) the ticket booth has this big perspex window and a little slot with a slider to pay money through and get your tickets. so, i notice the shabby looking person with quite a severe twitch infront of me. i just thought it was your usual junkie but no. this guy has to pull a knife and try to get the attendant to hand over the money. if it was a gun, then fair enough i severely doubt the window is bulletproof but it is most definitely knife(and junkie)proof. when the attendant laughs at this feeble attempt and hits the button to call the police the guy tries to jump through the window, falls off the wee desk bit and slashes the side of his face open. he then makes a run for it and runs straight into the door and knocks himself out just as the police are arriving. of attempted holdups i've seen. this is the most pathetic.

there are some medicines containing chlorine in a covalent bond. in general, an atom that can be poisonous on its own can be inert in a molecule. and, in practise, everything is toxic. even oxygen will kill you if you breathe it at 100% and atmospheric pressure. a better example would be a chlorine compound we all have in us. this compound is Hydrogen Chloride. its what is commonly reffered to as 'stomach acid' if you didn't have this your digestion would suck. also, if you have to much it can kill you. basically, everything has a certain level at which it is perfectly safe. -
yeah, the 'more down to earth' version still requires the gold atoms to exist. supernovae do not.
