do we have to go over this yet again?
-
yes well, there are scenarios where impossible really does mean impossible. for instance, it is imposible to go at or faster than c with a chemical rocket. that will be true no matter how big the or how advanced the rocket.

wow, it must be painful to suck that much.

Thre is no stright line motion / Gravitation
insane_alien replied to mvpanicker's topic in Classical Physics
do you have any evidence of failures of current gravitational theory(General relativity)? as for the apple, you may want to use angular momentum in your calculations. -
if he wasn't a n00b then he wouldn't be posting such drivel.

pop on IRC and talk to YT2095, he brews his own.

ahh right i get where your coming from now. well, you've mentioned rapid healing abilities, that one would be possible with nano-bots assuming they have a sufficiently advanced controller. some that i can think of: 1/stronger bones, get them to replace your bones with some kind of metal(titanium maybe) 2/more accute vision, the nanobots redesign/replace the retina/whole eye to have greater focus, sensitivity and possibly expand the available spectrum as well. 3/i suppose they could do something to provide greater strength as well. 4/might be able to get away with a built in taser 5/can control computer operated machinery(ala Terminator:rise of the machine but more believeable)

if thats what they do for methanol then you better be prepared to get stripped and shoved into a decontamination shower if anything mildly serious gets spilled.

there are some of us drivers out there that are courteous to bikers. at the most, a cyclist will require that you slow down a little until there is enough space and time to pass them. while this is an inconvienience(thats my third attempt at the word, it still gets marked wrong. spleleing soox.) its nothing big. I can deal with that easy. now, other drivers, THEY are the ones that cause problems. 99% are decent people and drivers but there is always that 1% of muppets like the guy overtaking me on the motorway a few weeks ago. I was going at the speed limit(70 mph) so he shouldn't have been doing it anyway but when he went to pull back into the lane, he hit my damn car. what sort of moron even thinks about pulling in until they re well past the other car. luckily, his car didn't spin out of control and it seemed he blamed me because he stuck his hands(yeah, both) out the window and gave me the finger(s). never had a cyclist do that to me. so, bascule, have faith, there are some nice people out there, its just that you only remember the not so nice.

but molecules do not have 2 d structures. if you want to get any meaningful results from your application, it needs to be 3d like in reality.
-
how about allergic reactions? your white-blood cells would probably attack the nano-bots. this can be stopped with immuno-suppresants but that'll cause a whole lot of ill-health
-
if your going for the realistic route for a bad effect its going to be centred on the human. the bots will only do what they are told. unless there is some sort of A.I involved. If there is an A.I. involved that say has the function of keeping everybody safe, you could have the A.I. using the nanobots to turn the human race into zombies. or some evil organization gaining control of them there are a myriad of things you can do that are withing the realms of possibility. just don't go crazy on it and it'll be believeable.

well, if we can make a sufficiently accurate mind/machine interface and some sort of training program then yeah its possible the mind could control them. it's going to require some sort of implant though. and then you would have to switch it off in your sleep incase you accidentally tell them to do something horrible to yourself.
-
well, the nano-bots them selves would not be likely to have any real processing capability. at most they would have a few sensors that would send a signal back to the controlling computer. the controlling computer would then send out instructions to the nanobots like little RC cars. the bots wouldn't speak to each other. though, there could maybe be a hierarchial system of bots
-
well, obviously there is the chance of something going wrong like the nano-bots eating your body. generally there would be safety measures in place (such as the bots aren't active unless they are in close proximity to a transmitter of some kind) and so on.

there are other representations of the table to focus on specific properties but the standard table is IMHO the best at describing lots of trends, arrangements and properties all at once. sticking with the standard table would definitely be best for general high school level chemistry.

i honestly don't mind people believing in creationism. if they don't try to force it on everybody else and they don't try to pass it off as science and they don't try to push it into schools then i am completely at peace with them. the moment they cross over that line i can quite easily become hostile though i will usually try and restrain myself. i wouldn't call it a mental disorder on its own. the people who generally try to force it on everybody else certainly seem to be lacking somewhat in the sanity department.

it was on the tv. can't find a link to the footage shown though. it was some group of parents opposing it.

My Thought Experiment (about Infinity/Thermodymanics)
insane_alien replied to Luminal's topic in The Lounge
it would theoretically always have an effect but this effect will drop below current measurement capabilities quite quickly especially since we wouldn't be able to measure it if the car was the size of a microbe. -
I was just watching the news and that thing about the Human Pampillo Virus vaccination in 12-year old girls came up. I was actually quite shocked by the arguements put forward by the people opposing it. The arguments can be summed up in one sentence: The moment the needle touches her skin, your daughter will become a hooker and sex addict. Instead they want to preach abstinance. none of this makes any sense. I doubt the people who approve these sorts of things would let it be released if it caused this and there is no medical reason why it should. If kids think this means its okay to have unprotected sex, then they don't know enough about sex and we should give them more sex ed. saying 'sex is bad, don't do it.' is either going to drive them to do it anyway or make them think there is something wrong with them beause they get the urge. how can this be allowed to affect a treatment that can save the lives of thousands of people and protect thousands more from suffering and millions more from the chance of suffering?

A 2nd place(Most enjoyable) and 2 3rd's(knowledgeable and interesting) better than last year. might dethrone azure from on of her awards next year

tried it, it goes left. yes i specifically went out and bought a helium balloon to check my hypothesis.

just because anyone can edit it doesn't mean that it is wrong about everything. wasn't there a study that put wikipedia and britannica roughly around the same for accuracy levels.

1/ mercury isn't as dense as osmium/iridium 2/ nothing can be at 0 K 3/ neutron stars are on a whole new level of denseness.

okay, take it to the extreme situation. you have a tank half filled with water(half empty if you're one of those people) with a little boat floating on it. it just so happens this tank is on the end of a centrifuge. whe you start of the water will be level and the boat is on top. as it spins faster and faster, the water will rotate so he surface is nearly perpendicular to the ground. the boat will still be floating on he surface as if nothing has happened.
