yeah but the chlorine and sulphur atoms don't have 4 holes for the bonds.

Energy Absorption of Reflected Light by Solar Panels
insane_alien replied to Ikbendom's topic in Other Sciences
reflected light will lose energy as nothing we know of(macroscopically) is a perfect mirror. so when the light hit the solar pannel then yo would maybe only get 98% of the energy you would get if it was in direct sunlight. -
ahh so when something is in free fall the entire universe accelerates past it. yeah that makes so much more sense. go jump out a plane(parachute optional) and TELL me that you didn't accelerate.

i heard the plastic dial on the trucks radio was made from mid-eastern oil as well. definitely something dodgy there

i've seen silver, green and yellow used for silicon. maybe that was just the crappy kits we used in highschool though.

its not a political situation. its fact vs. fiction.

shockwaves travelling through an incompressible liquid to blow a safe door off isn't quite the same thing. as was said before the ice will only result in a few tens of meters change in height. nothing too big. the water will flow towards the equator where it will weigh less so overall there will be less pressure. this is the opposite of what causes vulcanism and is overall very tiny as they are more influenced by tectonic plate movement and currents in the mantle.

ah just dump me in a ditch somewhere. its probably where they'll find my decayed body anyway. might as well leave me there.

you think scientists do science for financial gain? bahaha. its the fun of it. the challenge of a problem. i would do it for free if someone gave me a place to live and something to eat.

i would imagine that unless they manage to load a brain state with the same pattern as a living mouse then it will be brain dead. if they do that then the simulated brain would likely go insane from the lack of sensory input.

i like the smoking ban up here in scotland. you can actually breathe in some of the clubs and pubs.

more displaced electrons and holes then the more conductive.

if a process is designed to operate in a specific environment and is not closed then any environment outside the tolerances will cause the process to cease or become undesirable. i think thats what your asking anyway.

basically, they behave like a positron. when an electron and a hole meet they cancel each other out and that bit of the semiconductor becomes inert. the holes are drawn towards areas of negative charge. thats about it really.

now, i'm no expert on GR and QM but aren't these theories mutually exclusive? and i can't make sense of anything on that board. it seems to be random scribbles and equations followed by an arrow and 'God exists' there is no working. i want to see the paper the guy published/es.

okay, i've came to the conclusion that trying to make an arc lamp in your mums casserole dish is a lost cause. on the plus side, it does seem to have loosened some of the burnt on poiso... food stuck to it.

in my chemical engineering course abut 10% of the people are women. about the same number of my lecturers as well.

i would say that such a field does not exist as you would not know anything enough to make a meaningful contribution. specialisation is not such a bad thing. i would say chemistry is probably the closest as it exists at the interface between physics and biology. there is some QM and then there is biochem. but even then you can further specialise into certain areas of chemistry. there is a MASSIVE amount of stuff. no one person could know it all even if they lived to be 1000 and studied every day of their lives.

Is Evolution Universal?
insane_alien replied to immortal's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
memes will take over genes if memes develop biological functionality. as far as i am aware there is not molecule for a meme. so there would be no hereditary effect of a concept. memes would need to be taught. -
thats why you don't touch it when its working just like you wouldn't touch the insides of a blender when its on. or the teeth on a chainsaw or a vast number of more dangerous things.

metal with memory car? auto-recovers after car crash?
insane_alien replied to alan2here's topic in Physics
I don't think this would work for a number of reasons. 1/ the memory alloys do not possess enough strength to be used in vehicles. it would be impractical. 2/ it could potentially work for minor dents and damage but in a full on crash it wouldn't work where the metal can split. 3/ they would need to be heated to 500*C for them to regain shape (yeah i know the frames for glasses can do this quicker but they are smaller and thinner and generally are not subjected to the conditions of a car so can be made of a different alloy) which would fry the interior of the car. and since not all components would be made of the alloy some of these would need to be replaced and taken out before reforming. -
but if we built more prototypes we can perform more experiments and get results faster as we wouldn't have the backlog of proposed experiments(well, wwe would still have lots of waiting experiments just different ones and more of them)

wait wait wait, please, tell me i'mnot seeing what i think i'm seeing. because either they've been taking some pretty bad drugs or i have. and i'm quite confident that i haven't. what i think i'm seeing is that they are banning references to normal parents you know, the way its been for a few thousand million years since whatever ancestor of ours stopped splitting in two to reproduce. realising that what i just said might be interpreted as extremely homophobic to these people i will add that i have nothing against gay parents and that the kids would probably have had it explained to them by their parents. i mean seriously, what is the ratio of heterosexual parents to homosexual parents? it'll be hundereds of millions to one or something. quite the minority. ...<yadda yadda yadda BIG RANT yadda yadda blah> yeah i could go on like this but its too damn hot to do anything. <edit> no. wait i just seen this in the article and got me angry all over again oh come on now. this is basic classification. go into any biology lab and ask any biologist about the genders of the human race and they'll tell you male and female. its not hard. next they'll ban books that say all the colours of the rainbow are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet because it discriminates against brown, black, grey, white, pink and cyan. or how about books that list the species, or the elements i mean ffs get some damn common sense. GRArhh </edit> <edit edit> alright i finished the article and don't feel the need to rant more at this time </edit edit>
