Please help me to get back to the science
insane_alien replied to plankoman's topic in Science Education
First you need to consider carefully which branches of science interest you the most. Second, you need to test your conclusion by studying the science in your spare time. If you continue to enjoy the field then by all means go and study it at university, if you find you do not enjoy it as you thought you would, move on to another subject. It can be hard to find what really interests you and to be honest i think most people stumble upon it by chance. by casting a net far and ide you increase your chances of finding what is right for you. -
depends on the fineness of the sand and its packing structure.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stress_%28biology%29 stress as definied psychologically and biologically. it does have physiological effects as it can alter your body chemistry. a little stress is a good thing for most people and some people enjoy a bit of higher stress but everybody has their limits and it will eventually start to degrade their health to the point where it can actually kill you.

Dying after a broken heart
insane_alien replied to Mr Rayon's topic in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
well, depression can cause a suppresion of the immune system rising from chemical changes in the brain. due to the lowered immune function it can be easier to pick up disease and perform more poorly at fighting it off. it doesn't have to be suicide. -
if it cannot be proven or tested then it is not a hypothesis

there is no medical data to support it. the only way it could possibly extend human life is by reducing stress but that won't matter if you get highly stressed regularly

pfft that site fails to consider the quantum nature of santa. he wears a device that very very precisely measures his momentum allowing him to spread out in space(this is what gives him the fat look, he is infact borderline anorexic due to not eating between christmasses) and be in multiple houses at the same time. what this results in is quite a leisurely pace around the world letting physics do all the hard stuff.

Straight line motion in a three dimensional space
insane_alien replied to finiter's topic in Modern and Theoretical Physics
yes things can move in straight line in 3 dimensional space. -
pigs are pretty close to humans. a lot of diseases transfer very easily between us. thats why you don't eat raw pork. this isn't a problem now as we understand how cooking makes meat safe now but 2000 years ago you would contract a noticably larger amount of disease after eating pork than beef, mutton or poultry. hence it was regarded as 'dirty'. the amount of bacteria in pork would be the same as in any other meat product, but the key difference is the type of bacteria. especially the potential of those types to infect humans.

its matter with energy. energy isn't a substance of its own. it needs to be carried by something. the jets will play a role. they will be incredibly bright near the disk and radiating a huge amount of light. this will also be coming from the disk. i don't think you can consider one without another when considering the luminosity. even when you have a 'dormant' quasar with no visible jets there will still be a large amount of material thrown off simply due to the size of the damn thing but they won't be anywhere near as intense when it is in an active state. jet formation is still a bit of a hot topic in astrophysics with much debate on the particulars.

drinking more than you need CAN hurt you. it can cause salt imbalances that can be fatal. thirst doesn't mean you are already dehydrated. thirst means you're thirsty. it is perfectly possible to feel thirsty yet be in a state of excess hydration. and dehydration as a medical condition has a number of symptoms that go beyond a feeling of thirst that would have to appear before it is classed as dehydration. i have still never experienced a confusion between thirst and hunger. even when quite badly dehydrated it still felt distinct from hunger. hunger is an empty, hollow feeling while thirst (besides the dry mouth feeling) is more of a spongy feeling(this is honestly the best i can do to articulate it. it's not quite right but i'm unable to articulate the feeling with out calling it 'thirsty')

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=%28%283+solar+masses+*+c^2%29%2Fday%29%2Fsolar+luminosity most of the mass is converted to energy via various processes, a lot of the rest is consumed by the black hole and the rest of the rest is ejected. converting 3 solar masses to energy per day gives a luminosity 16.13 trillion times that of our sun. from the imperfect conversion, consumed and ejected matter a value of a trillion isn't so hard to believe.

ahh thats why all our calculus based designs and simulations don't work! </sarcasm>

no, but it seems likely the retention time will be somewhat longer than a day. so if the black hole is consuming three solar masses per day then the lower bound is likely to be greater than 3 solar masses. if its plausible to have lots of friction with 3 solar masses then with a greater density it is even more plausible.

wow, i just gave you an integration problem any highschool student would be able to solve and you failed miserably at it. go learn integration before you start complaining about how it is done. for instance, where the hell did the t and the limits come from? the weren't supplied. and what about the constant that goes after x^2? i clearly said that the integrated function had the value of 5 at x=2 now what bit are you not getting?

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=3+solar+masses+%2F+%2812+light+days*+1+light+day+*+1+light+day%29 using some basic assumptions about the dimensions of the disk (equivalent to a cuboid 1*1*12 light days in dimension) the density isn't shockingly low for the conditions. 28.6 nanograms per cubic meter is pretty decent. its some 8.5*10^15 hydrogen atoms per cubic meter. this some 10^9 times denser than molecular coulds. yes you will get frictional heating but you will also get magnetic heating as well as the atoms will exist as completely ionized nuclei. due to its self interaction you'll likely get spots far denser than the average. EDIT: forgot about fusion heating. you're going to get a fair amount of that too.

you can't prove that because 0 is a possible solution for C if you answer my post then you would see what you want to know.

heat capacity plays a role in how quickly steady state state heat conduction is achieved. a higher heat capacity will take longer to reach steady state heat conduction(all other things being equal). but for steady state heat conduction it doesn't play any role because the conductor isn't changing temperature.

answer my post and it will become apparent

okay, if the derivative of a function is equal to 2x then what is its integral? at x=2 the integrated function has a value of 5. nothing above is mathematically impossible. explain how your posts are consistent with the above.

The unnecessary totalitarianism that is school uniforms.
insane_alien replied to Destiny's topic in Politics
I think its a mental thing. In my work there isn't really a dress code. I could go in wearing my metallica t-shirt and some shredded jeans if i wanted to. But, i know i wouldn't get much work done as i wouldn't be in the right mindset. my mind would associate the casual dress with a casual behaviour. so i wear a shirt and trousers. no tie but thats simply because i loathe ties. I noticed this trend in school(i'm from the UK where school uniforms are the rule rather than the exception) when we had no uniform days and id be pretty well distracted all day. just because you don't like school uniforms(nobody does) doesn't mean they are evil or totalitarianistic or oppressive or whatever. they do infact serve a purpose and they do infact work to an extent. -
it isn't impossible. its very possible. that was my point. i completely reject the idea that it is impossible to have both leukemia and HIV.

not really. you either find a way to build up the muscle that isn't building up or you stick something in there to make it look like it is. the implant will never look as natural as real muscle though. but you should probably ask the question, does it really matter? it seems a rather minor aesthetic issue.

silicone. same stuff they use to make breast implants.
