it's really just laziness, i could hit the shift key but my brain keeps going 'meh, leave it'. i'm trying to change, but it's not happening

mmm, if you hang around here you do get to now the various members. i don't necessarily know their real name, i don't know what they look like, i don't even know what they sound like. BUT. i know how they behave, likes and dislikes, interests, talents, etc. etc. this fits well in a science forum as in science its not who says it, it's can they justify it?

my voting tends to follow a 'who's got the least retarded policies method' on a 1/10 scale no party scores above a 4. there's no party i'd actually want to vote for but there are a number of parties that i want to keep out of power. unfortunately one of those parties is the SNP who are currently Scotland right now. not happy about that one.

List of naturally occurring gas and liquid molecules?
insane_alien replied to JSEverex's topic in Chemistry
well a simple rule of thumb is that big ass molecules tend to be solid. as they don't have the mobility to be liquid. proteins definitely fall under the big ass molecule catagory.also the intermolecular forces between them can be quite strong also rendering them less likely to be liquid or gaseous. of course, there are some exceptions but they're few and far between. -

which fall under the domain of solids. are we done now? -

yes but proteins aren't really gasses or liquids they can be found in suspension in a gas or liquid but are not usually the gas or liquid themselves. -

well the O2 comes from a biological source so i'd say yes. Which of course means that there's an unholy mess of compounds that apply. listing them all would be quite impossible as there are millions of candidates. -
whats wrong with Sven? i'm Stephen although if a coin had come up the other way i'd be Michael

Like has already been said, its crap. A big clue to this is the Argon. its completely unreactive (barring a few exotic states when its forced to react with fluorine and those are useless for solar panels as the light would destroy them, hell, anything above 100K would destroy them). current promising methods of boosting PV efficiency are based more on carbon nanostructured surfaces to collect light.

then yeah, it'll have been made up, seeing as it's a fictional show and all, they don't really care about the existance of something to bung it in.

well, if it is non-zero then it's pretty damn near zero. also, there is no possible mechanism for any of them to work. there are physical limits that suggest that it is impossible which further reduces the chances.

dude, its just a picture that you wish to use as a representation of yourself. it doesn't matter what it contains, it could be a picture of your self, a caricature, something you like, something that reflects your personality a bit whatever. it doesn't turn anything into a game. is it really any different to using a forum where there are no images?

no, its complete bull likely made up for plot purposes and chemistry humour. it would be impossible to harness 100% of the energy hitting the surface of the pannel anyway.

seeing as psychic or paranormal phenomenon have nevver been proven to exist, zero percent.

I think I disproved evolution
insane_alien replied to Peron's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
it only affects evolution if it affects reproduction. neither skydiving or condom wearing have enough of an impact on this to provide any selective pressures. -
I think I disproved evolution
insane_alien replied to Peron's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
you seem to be confusing taking risks with a lack of reproductive success. the only way a human activity is going to cause a break down is if doing this activity results in a decreased chance of producing offspring. skydiving does not inhibit your ability to produce offspring, neither does wearing condoms(you always have the option to take it off when you want kids). the only way skydiving reduces your chances of offspring is if you die. but then, thats would be a reasonably rare occurance. less than 100 people a year die from skydiving, thousands skydive each year. not that big a group all things considered. i think you need to think about these things more. they show cracks in evolution no more than a two year olds scribbles show that all humans are illiterate. -
so... you want to drive a cylinder/turbine without a pressure differential? yeah... good luck with that.

Solar Wind as an energy source?
insane_alien replied to Joshua Buffone's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
the solar wind is hardly an abundant or endless source of energy. the energy density of it is positively crap. you have maybe 10-20 protons per cubic meter moving at upto 650 km per second. that translates to 13million protons per second per meter squared AT BEST. so at 100eV a piece that 1.3 billion electron volts per second per meter squared which is 2.08*10^-10 W/m^2 that is a really low low number. so you'd need a collector with roughly tha area of france to power a single 100W lightbulb. http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=100W%2F2.08*10^-10W%2Fm^2 this idea is doomed from the get go -

maintaining caloric intake
insane_alien replied to Zolar V's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
its possible(after all, if you're severely ill in hospital they can keep you fuelled up on an IV drip), but its not going to be all that comfortable or that ideal. and you'll feel hungry ALL the time. you could live, but it wouldn't be that enjoyable -
that would be absolutely terrible you'd be stuck with a noncondensible component building up in your live steam pipes which would crap up your cylinders/turbine/whatever.

eh? granite does not require an ocean to form. it's igneous rock. it requires lava. venus has plenty. also, i'd like to see your source that weve seen granite on venus. i can't find any reference even though it is likely to be present as there is lot of geological activity that leads to granite formation.

the human lungs only remove 15% of the oxygen you breath in because 1/ thats enough to saturated the blood under normal conditions, and when you're heart is beating faster(and there's more blood flow) then your lungs will absorb more oxygen than normal. 2/ to absorb significantly more with the same level of oxygen saturation your lungs would need to be much much bigger. to halve the remaining capacity (which is for all intents and purposes negligble anyway) you'd need lungs with twice the area which means pretty much twice the volume without changes to the structure of the lungs.
