you logged into the irc for a grand total of 2 minutes 20 seconds. not everybody is looking at the IRC window all the time. if you wait longer then the chance of recieving a response will be greater

Detecting clogged arteries
insane_alien replied to Cap'n Refsmmat's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
ultrasound imaging may provide a way of detecting clogged arteries that would be non invasive, however accuracy may be an issue. -
no, not really. its just a side effect of the massive doses of adrenaline that get pumped into your brain. it could be replicated by a hypodermic injection of adrenaline though. or just stick yourself on a roller coaster.

not only is it not stupid, it does make sense and does infact happen during fight or flight response situations. such as the aforementioned car crash scenario. it is important to realise that it is only the perception of time that alters, not the actual passage of time though.

speed of time is always one second per second in the local frame. i think you might want to look up a thread on why time appears to slow down when you're scared(can't remember the exact title and couldn't find it using the search function, if someone else knows its location then there's some rep points in it for you if if you find it and post the link). basically he is asking if our brains processed data faster, would we percieve time as running slower.

probably closer to 2.5 trillion US dollars per gram. and the explosion is not necessarily massive. 1kg of antimatter reacting with 1kg of matter would produce an explosion 43MT in yeild. the most power man made bomb that has been detonated was 50MT(scaled back from a potential 100MT) as it stands antimatter contacts matter everyday. it is the basis for a PET scan which means they actually purposely do this within your body for diagnostic reasons. as we do not here of hospitals erupting in a nuclear fireball daily i thin it is same to assume that no, it will not produce the biggest explosion ever.

with sodium hydroxide and sulphuric acid, none at all.

have you ever watched fox news? i dedicated an entire hour to watching it once. it was like watching an hour of REPUBLICANS ARE GODS! DEMOCRATS ARE HEATHENS!

what was wrong with that thread for posting this?

if you are really concerned about your privacy on the internet, there is an application called 'TOR' basically it takes your IP traffic, encrypts it, shunts it round various 'nodes' and then out a random 'exit node'. the ones that know where to send the data do not know what they are sending and the ones that know what to send do not know where to send it(or something, i'm not to clear on the specifics) but it does give you anonimity on the internet(for free too). there are a few downsides though, it makes the internet slow. really slow. think back to the days of 56k modems. this is due in part to the latencies involved in excessive routing and encryption of data and in part to the lack of people functioning as exit nodes while a lot of people are using it as users. essentialy you have a few hundred people all trying to get a share of the same internet connection.

i'm a moderator? i'm pretty sure someone would have told me and i'd have some cool extra mod powers if that were the case. it's true i have been here a while but i only have powers in the IRC channel. -
Zero point fluctuations and the Casimir effect
insane_alien replied to Chuck Norris's topic in Quantum Theory
it could be, yes, but itis pointless to speculate without further evidence. virtual particles doesn't require the introduction of new unknown entities and it doesn't violate any physical laws. it fits, we just aren't sure(>95% confidence) as experimentation is difficult. basically in order to say its something different you'd need to supply direct experimental evidence(as with anything). -
personally, i wouldn't choose to go to that pizza place or a hairdresser who asked for my phonenumber (for business purposes at least, and then depending on gender and attractiveness). As it turns out, my hairdresser does know what i usually want him to do to my hair. this is merely because i have had the same hairdresser since i was two but still, no information was passed that i didn't want passed. i'm also on first name terms with the bar staff in both of my villages pubs and the bars in the students union at my university. even the staff in the starbucks i sometimes go to on my way to uni know me. also the people who work at the trainstation. none of these relationships were made by me handing over information like my post code or ID (well, with the pubs it required ID a few times till they knew my face). i'd like to keep it that way. i have no problems with handing over ID if there is a sufficient reason for it. like buying alcohol(although i'm getting out of the stage where i could be mistaken for an 18 year old and i certainly wouldn't let them copy information into a computer from it i'd go elsewhere for beer) or if i'm renting something from a business(even down to a video shop)

do we really need two threads on this topic? -
How is light generated/emitted from stars?
insane_alien replied to Starstruck's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
http://science.howstuffworks.com/sun-info.htm this should start you off and give you some useful terms to search from. basically nuclear fusion occurs in the core and heats up the sun. hot things radiate electromagnetic radiation(light, heat, ultraviolet etc.). -

right, rereading the OP and your latest post in the first post, you seem to be proclaiming a new and as yet previously unseen ice phase and then you link to wikipedia as proof. what you describe seems to be amorphous ice which has been known for ages and is used in electron cryomicroscopy experiments. calling it 'solid state water' means nothing other than 'ice' so i suspect you are using it as jargon meant to confuse for i can see no other purpose to it. amorphous structure in solids are well known and studied. the fact it occurs in water under extreme condition is no surprise. i also have no idea what you mean about the 'hydrogen bonding ratio' i assume you mean the degree of hydrogen bonding in the material. well, by counts of interaction this is the same in all ices. by strength of interaction, probably less in amorphous ices as they are not a stable form of ice unless kept under high pressure and cold temperatures -
Man arrested for being naked in his own house
insane_alien replied to bob000555's topic in The Lounge
i could understand if he was standing right up at the window and waving his wang about at schoolkids but if he's just going about his life(making coffee) then i see no problem at all. -
well, if you look at a fMRI of someone who is thinking there is a three dimensional distribution of activity throughout the brain that varies with time so they are 4 dimensional, just ot a specific chemical or anything.

yes, they're justified. at the very least it's slander and hence illegal.

first off, calculate the pressure you need to lift the hover craft. then you'll need to calculate how fast the air will leak out of the skirt(which is likely to be quite tricky to do properly) and that will give you a value for how much air you need to blow.

did i say i was a labour voter? all newspapers have bias one way or another but the daily mail really is widely known for it. it's dripping with it. every time something goes wrong: IMMIGRANTS! everytime there's no news: PRINCESS DIANA! nothing going wrong: PRINCESS DIANA! ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS GOING UNNOTICED! i'm not saying they are flat out lying about government agenda, but they do not present all the facts, they skew facts in support of their wild conclusion jumping andput so much spin on it that it makes pulsars look slow.

you're getting off topic here. and a note to our non-UK membership, dailymail is sort of like Fox News except in printed form and blaiming immigrants instead of socialists.
