  1. The fact that they talk about immigration policy is not what makes them racist. it is the blatant racism that makes them racist. If it were only the fact they talked about immigration policy that made them look racist then they wouldn't actually be so bad. its the fact that they have hate campaigns against anyone who they don't see as being 'british' that makes the look like racist morons. also, you seem to imply that no other political parties talk about immigration. they ALL do. it's a big issue with to voting populace. the only difference is that with the rest of them there isn't as much thinly veiled racist xenophobia.
  2. how should i know, i have not conducted any studies, i haven't even had an indepth conversation about it. this sort of stuff doesn't hold my interest for very long, i leave it to the politicians to sort it out. besides, this is in risk of going offtopic and turning into a discussion about immigration rather than the BNP's appearence on question time.
  3. yes, the reaction is perfectly safe as long as you aren't using crazy concentrations like 2M solutions and just dumping the reactants in by the bucketload. do it with 0.05M and add the reactants gradually and keeping it well stirred is perfectly safe.(as long as you wear eye protection to protect against splashes, gloves should be worn too)

DrP, these issues are actually discussed without racism being brought up at all. its only when the BNP come into it is racism brought up. usually by them saying something racist and then the whole arguement spirals round that. leave out the BNP and you actually get a lot of potential solutions that are actually in some way feasible.

The big problem people in the UK have with immigration(and what i expect has lead to the BNP having as much support as they do) is that the illegal immigrants have had to travel through quite a number of countries with very high standards of living. higher than the UK's in some cases (using this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Development_Index for instance, france is eighth, UK is 21st). so obviously they are not in it to just get their families to safety or even to give them the best chance in life. personally, i don't really have much of a problem with immigration. but i do feel it should go through official channels.
  6. well the temperatures are low and the materials are pretty inert. you could just go with air if you wanted. if you are really paranoid about safety you could use notrogen as that is completely inert at those temperatures to those materials. and if there are any materials nearby that do react with nitrogen at those temperatures then they'll be destroyed by the atmosphere anyway.

  9. wow 2.2GiB/s for Super Hi vision uncompressed. lossy compression can usually knock that down to a tenth so 220MiB/s for the lossy compression. dual layer bluray would hold less than 4 minutes of that.

  11. umm, sulphuric acid is a stron acid, both of the hydrogens will remove themselves to form H+ ions. these will react with the OH- ions to form water and the Na+ and SO4 (2-) ions will be left in solution. the full rection is 2NaOH +H2SO4 --> 2H2O +Na2SO4

  14. not ro mention coal seam fires several of these were reported in the exploration of the north american continent by european settlers and there is one in austrailia thats been burning for 6000 years. of course a lot of these(particularly in china) have been ignited by human activity but they can start naturally as well, a lightning strike, brush fire etc. etc.

  17. actually with ubuntu(and most *nix distributions) you have an inbuilt firewall. also, as there are no services listening on any port anyway, you don't need a firewall to restrict incoming connections as nothing is going to do anything about an incoming connection attempt. if you set up a server or something that listens on any port then itis a smart idea to put some firewall rules in place just incase an exploit for that service pops up. not a flaw with linux, just a good security practice.
  18. some reactions do require a catalyst(either to get a specific reaction to occur over other reactions or because the catalyst is a necissary component of the reaction pathway) however most are there to increase the rate of reaction or allow the reaction to take place at lower temperatures. you can tell if a chemical is acting as a catalyst by removing it (or adding more) and seeing if the rate changes.

  21. the big problem with high concentrations of helium is the low concentrations of oxygen associated with it. i guess if you die from asphyxiation then that would be considered permanent damage. the only way it is going to destroy the lungs is if you inhale high pressure helium but that problem extends to all gases. if you put your mouth up to the nozzle and turn the valve on a pressure cylinder then expect to die a horrible death.
  22. noble gases are expensive though. we need to know more about the use case to know which would be the best gas for the situation. give us this information at least 1/how hot do you need the gas to get 2/what will the hot gas be in contact with 3/why does the gas need to be hot you don't need to go into specifics about the use case but this information would help immensly.
  23. in my course at uni, we have to deal with weird units all the time specifically to enable us to deal with whatever comes up. although personally i tend to convert everything to SI and then do whatever mathematical wizardry is required. but only if it's something long and detailed i need to do. if it something like that i'd leave the energy in calories and work it through like that.
  24. well, its actually a supercritical fluid. in the super critical regime there is no gas or liquid. they are not distinct phases of matter and there is no transition point. the really interesting bit is when there is a transition to metallic hydrogen.
  25. i think you've been beaten to it by nature anyway. there are plenty of fields on undulating terrain already. you could possibly look for studies on field productivity and try and relate it to orientations of the fields.
