my brother uses ardour http://ardour.org/ with his band. i've never used it so i can't personally couch for how good it is but he says it'll do what you want.

well its not as if it is a low profile event. the olympics will take up significant space in tv news, newspapers, radio, people will be talking about during the day. its kind of hard to not hear about it due to the vast quantity of coverage.

When did language first evolve?
insane_alien replied to gib65's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
no idea. there are a few definitions that could fit. -
so how come two objects can exist in the exact same space yet at different times. and the fact that crashes are time dependant. or even just if i wanted to meet someone, not only would i need to give them spatial coordiantes, but also a time coordinate. its not good if they show up 3 weeks before me or something. for instance, a popular place to meet up in glasgow is under the clock in central station. so you have a precise position. but without a time coordiante chances of meeting up with someone there are slim to none.

mods, kindly put this thread out of its misery.

i'll turn a quarter of a century old. hopefully i'll be employed in a chemical engineering firm by then. if not i won't be too happy(although i could be doing something even more enjoyable but i seriously doubt that i'll ever be an astronaut)

that it is the media simply adopting the word socialism as a scare word like they did with communism or radiation or nuclear rather than an inherent evilness of socialism.

Why Does Water Make Me Sick?
insane_alien replied to GrandMasterK's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
whats RO for those of us who aren't psychic. -
the OP is long gone from these forums.
-
that wasn't the origional topic either. probably time for this thread to die. it served its purpose a few pages ago anyway.

time would have to go forward for the temperature of the background radiation to drop. further back you go, the hotter the universe was.
-
i think this thread has gone so far off topic that its in danger of leaving the galaxy.

Men, listen closely: Watermelon has the same effect as Viagra.
insane_alien replied to mooeypoo's topic in Science News
you're doing it wrong. try some watermelon. -
i don't think there's been restore floppies since windows 98.

get yourself a gparted livecd http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php its not a particularly large download and doesn't take up anywhere near a whole CD. boot up with the CD and delete your fedora partition. then swap gparted for the windows install disk and install it in the empty space being careful to tell it not to install over the whole disk.

the thing is, none has control over this big red button. it controls itself.

a nuclear drive doesn't necessarily mean a series of nuclear bombs going off (and the only messy ones are ones that derive some power from fission) so the drive system of longshot is fine, it uses inertial confinement to initiate the fusion reaction rather than a fission primary. there are also nuclear thermal rockets which just use a contained reactor to superheat a reactionmass (typically hydrogen). i have also seen a fusion based one which is essentially a leaky tokamak with reactor plasma(sounds star trekkie) vented straight into the nozzle and out into space.

new demo idea. Brainstormers needed.

well the easiest way of collecting disilane would be to generate silane as usual(it also generates some disilane and even trisilane but not in useful quantaties) and condense the disilane vapour (it should condense at -14*C) you will need to use a refridgerated coolant(or a really cold day) for this. the yield of disilane varies but i never figured out all the variables. i also still haven't been able to uncover the website i mentioned earlier but you don't really need it i was just messing around with it to see what happens and it'd just complicate the setup. a note on the safety aspect of it, silicon dioxide vapour will be produced, not really a good thing to have glass depositing itself in your lungs have an extractor fan going at all times. also use the proper safety techniques for dealing with explosions although there shouldn't really be any bother if you're sensible about the amounts. and i'm not really saying the safety stuff for hermanns benefit, i know he'll be safer than i was when i did it but its to anyone else who decides they want to give it a shot. -
Are there any relevant secular reasons to support gay marriage?
insane_alien replied to Severian's topic in Politics
and completely irrelevant too. a rose by any other name and all that. -
the bound system has less energy than the free protons and neutrons. this means it weighs less. you have to account for the energy of bound systems when you're dealling with atomic nuclei as it forms a significant proportion of the mass.

mechanically change magnetite to hematite?
insane_alien replied to h4tt3n's topic in Inorganic Chemistry
wasn't there a thread on this recently? as i said in the other one, it cannot happen without a source of oxygen. it is possible to make many reactions happen by mechanical agitation, exapmples include shock sensitive explosives, whisking eggs to break appart the protein etc. there is nothing wrong with that part. but Fe2O3 has a higher fraction of oxygen than Fe3O4. this oxygen cannot appear out of nowhere unless you are depositing a chemical with a high fraction of iron. the article doesn't state whether this is happening or not. -
Are there any relevant secular reasons to oppose incestuous marriage?
insane_alien replied to Severian's topic in Politics
against the marriage itself, i don't oppose it. as to having offsring result from it, i'm not exactly in favour of it due to the higher risks of genetic problems. and i do think that is diffirent from genetic abnormalities from people with existing genetic abnormalities as in an case of inbreeding the parents would be capable of producing healthy offspring if they reproduced with other people whereas those in other circumstances would not. -

Can energy of an atom nucleus/core change?
insane_alien replied to buddha elämuni's topic in Speculations
the fact that quarks interact more strongly at greater distances is perfectly logical and scientific. the gluons interact with the other gluons resulting in a stronger force with increasing distance. although beyond a certain limit the force drops sharply as the gluons decay. also, the fact this happens doesn't require logic, it is what is observed.
