  1. Life goes on and new history has to be made but we are not exactly inundated with slave era relics now.
  2. There doesn't need to be every remnant of a bad era around.
  3. I don't know atm.
  4. But when the living memories are long gone, there are real artifacts that people can get a sense that these things really happened, and not everybody is as literate as we are and books may be too abstract. I care very much that these things don't happen again.
  5. Yes, it is that thread. I had that deja vu feeling but couldn't put my finger on it. I was also the outlier then. But at one time he was a "worthy" citizen. If there are no visible symbols those acts will disappear from the collective memory. If you want to respond, do so, but I'll leave it here. And in hundreds of years it'll all be forgotten and we'll start all over again. I wonder how many times it's happened already? I will not comment anymore here on this.
  6. No, leave the ones that are there as authentic reminders of history and where not to tread in future. How many times has that statue prompted a child to ask who he was and what he did, thus introducing them to the concept of slavery and discrimination?
  7. Removing symbols of injustices is a good thing? "Lest We Forget". A short-sighted and naive action worthy of an authoritarian government 'cleansing' its past. But that's another discussion...
  8. Sea level could rise 216 feet. NY is 33 feet above sea level, so it would be 183 feet underwater. That may take 5000 years... pulled that off National Geographic.
  9. I think the simplest answer is that only living things can make living things and once something dies it's irreversible, in our current state of knowledge.
  10. I don't think he's discussing in good faith.
  11. I meant the platforms as an entity, not the users employing their own conditions..
  12. Care to elaborate? The question encompasses forums/social media generally. What initiated the question was news that Trump's social media output is starting to get scrutinized and censored for acceptability on some platforms and, coincidentally, there are a couple of posters here who are causing controversy in a similar vein.
  13. In public forums. Are the rules different for FB, Twitter etc and say here?
  14. I notice this is currently being wrestled with on the social platforms, including this one. Is it not really an unattainable aspiration because freedoms must always have limits? Where do we draw the lines between acceptable and not?
  15. The fact he had took the luxury of having at least one hand in his pocket whilst kneeling on him is strong evidence of George Floyd's compliance. He was torturing him.
  16. Odious.
  17. Yeah, I don't think that's right either on review. I remembered it being a woman but saw that one first when I went to search again and assumed it to be correct. Her name was Matilda McCrear and she was born in 1858, brought over in a slave ship at two and died in 1940 at 82.
  18. We can't see the tree for the forest.
  19. You need better news sources. Try to find evidence to see what the situation is, rather than what supports your belief. It's called "confirmation bias"... you might have heard of it.
  20. Because blacks are disproportionately singled out and treated with less respect by white officers. But the current situation is that black lives don't matter as much as everybody elses by those responsible for law and order.
