I was reading recently that Chinese street surveillance cameras can pick out people even when they are wearing surgical masks. I'm guessing by reading the IR output.

That's what Relativity says, which is believed to be beyond its limits as one approaches T=0.

toxicity of lead strips in pond water
StringJunky replied to redrobot's topic in Inorganic Chemistry
Don't worry about it, the lead is, or will be, coated in insoluble and impermeable lead compounds as time passes. Look how how many centuries lead roofing and leaded glass lasts. They wouldn't last if the lead continually reacted with water and gases in the atmosphere. Once it develops that dull tarnish it's sealed. -
I don't think BBT precludes the universe being eternal. It just describes it emerging from a hot, dense state, which happened 14BY ago.

COVID-19 outbreak (caused by SARS-CoV-2)

Yes, that's an anomaly. -

Look where Infowars is in iNow's infographic. It's as fascist right-wing as they come. Associated Press(AP) and Reuters are pretty balanced. https://apnews.com/ https://uk.reuters.com/ https://www.reuters.com/news/world These will state if a report is not verified. I also read Japan Times (In English) to get an Asian perspective of world events. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/ -
COVID-19 outbreak (caused by SARS-CoV-2)

No, his PhD is in Ecology, Evolution & Conservation Biology. He expounds on subjects as though he's an expert; outside of his skillset. He's also an antivaxxer. -

infowars is a right-wing conspiracy site. -
The 'observer' is whatever you are measuring with.

Is the Earth close to the center of the Universe ?
StringJunky replied to MaximT's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
Turtles. It's just another regression series that never ends. -
Thoughts prompted by this: Neural plasticity, based on repetitive experience creates automatic pathways that bypasses the need for conscious decision-making; that ‘readiness potential’ signal that pure determinists bring up, may be indicative of that automatic unconscious process. Perhaps, generally, it is only more novel experiences/inputs that may require consciously thinking about; the things we do all the time may generate neuroplastically-created circuits. I don’t know if there is research that controls for this .

Moderation: split from men vs woman
StringJunky replied to Dissily Mordentroge's topic in Suggestions, Comments and Support
When you see a moderator comment not in a red or green box, they are in 'member-mode' and are participating. When they do this, they relinquish their moderation duties in that thread, which will be handled by one of the others. Sometimes they may have to break that convention if they feel the immediate situation warrants it but it doesn't happen often. When they are in discourse you can sock it to them, within the rules, as any other member. -
You can't make things go quicker than they do. Be happy that you have your papers in arxiv where, one day, they might get picked by some competent person(s) with an interest in your subject, who may look to give a further critique. I'm no scientist but I do know people taking an interest can take decades. Just get on with your next bit of interest and enjoy continuing on your journey.

Swansont's description is more accurate but the principle of mine described and others alludes to the same: energy and momentum is not imparted. It's actually much more complicated and you need to understand statistics and probability to describe quantum processes properly, I think.

Electronic property that determines optical transparency

That's clearer. Thanks. -
Electronic property that determines optical transparency
StringJunky replied to StringJunky's topic in Quantum Theory
Thanks. I'll have to reflect on this but is it right to say that the more available states there are, the harder it is for a photon to pass through? -
What electronic property of an atom or molecule determines whether it will be transparent to some wavelength? Is it the outer electronic configuration, which orbital the outer electrons reside in, whether there is a specific pair/combination there, or something else? Mods: Move it if it's in the wrong place. E2A: To rephrase: What is it about the outer electron configuration that causes transparency to a/some wavelength/s?

Read swansont's post.

I've had a passing interest over the years in people claiming Big Pharma blocking 'cheap' or 'natural' cures and, so far, I've seen no justification. They just don't pass peer review. Most of it's answered in your link. Conspiracy-based paranoia is a way for some people to avoid the fact that they are largely responsible for how their life turns out.

Photons int To elaborate: Photons interact/get absorbed permanently with electrons when they have the right wavelength. Those that do will not pass through if they have, rendering the material opaque at those wavelengths when observed. With transparent material, like glass, photons in the visible spectrum don’t have the right wavelength to be absorbed by the electrons, so they are only absorbed briefly and then. re-emitted for a brief but finite time. The important thing to realise is that as it travels in between electrons it is moving at c. Each time it bumps into an electron its total travel time is extended, hence, giving the appearance of slowing down.
-
The apparent slowdown is caused by the photon accumulating a delay time by briefly interacting with and being emitted from electrons as it passes through but at all times it is transmitted it travels at c.... there is never any acceleration.

It's not a sustainable model but that's the way it is.
