  1. In its orbital an electron behaves as a standing wave. Its wavelength in that orbital is such that it does not interfere with itself. Here's a high school explanation: https://en.m.wikibooks.org/wiki/High_School_Chemistry/Schrodinger's_Wave_Functions
  2. Because he's not making it up and he''s been doing it a long time. He's giving you the conventional physics that has been learned and amalgamated over the last century or two.
  3. No, because some things emerge unexpectedly. I think there are properties in the periodic table that can't be predicted i.e. the progression is not always linear.
  4. It's comforting to know we are not the only ones suffering.
  5. ST and multiverse theories are attempts to solve problems of the day. Simulated reality solves nothing at this point in time. Simulated reality implies a reality outside of our own and god-like consciousness to create/control it. It's essentially a religious concept with modern details..
  6. As Strange says, simulation is not falsifiable. ST is an act of faith, it seems, atm but it is falsifiable. The simple fact is, ST has brains like Edward Witten on it, which gives it some creedence by virtue of their solid reputation in other endeavors in the field that were successful. It's bleeding edge stuff. They'll drop it if it looks like it won't come up with the goods.
  7. Yep. It is deeply resistant to a complex explanation because it's, like, simple.
  8. As has been said before: one does not agonise over distance and pontificate on the ontological properties of it, nor should one do the same for any other parameter, of which time is one.
  9. A clock measures time by definition. We are in a science section, so let's not wander off on a whimsy.
  10. In relativity, the clock, as we know it, starts with it.
  11. In a pre-BB scenario does time have to move forward? Can it not move in any direction it likes? If there is no space/distance between things and the universe is completely homogenous in substance would time need to exist as we know it because there would be nothing to relate it to; time being relative?
  12. Maybe the concentration is the determining factor. With milk, the water is diluted by the other constituents, so the immune system may not adversely react. Seems odd talking about diluting water but there it is.
  13. Yes. You can do something or do nothing... nobody's watching... except your parents... maybe.
  14. Remember this: that which is presented without evidence can be dismissed without evidence,.. he pulled it out of his ass.
  15. "How I hate those little slices of death we call sleep" - Edgar Allen Poe. Possibly inspired by that.
  16. Operative word is 'configured' - in the sense of an ensemble. I don't think there's routine replacement of cells that reside in areas that store memories... kinda defeats the point.
  17. You, as a person, are your cells, which are configured uniquely as you, so I don't see how you can be replaced by a copy in your sleep. I am disregarding external intervention. Could you give a reference to this idea?
  18. Certain neural configurations or organs within a brain, which can be seen, determine whether an organism is likely to have certain abilities or not... it's not magic.
  19. Neither. It's a matter of brain physiology whether an organism is equipped with the necessary apparatus to be self-conscious, or not.
  20. I think you are setting the bar too high with this one because I think it requires self-consciousness i.e an organism needs to be able to 'mirror' itself mentally.
  21. TO CLEAR YOUR ENTIRE SEARCH BAR HISTORY: -Open an Internet Explorer window and select the gear icon in the top right-hand corner. -Select Safety > Delete Browsing History. -Select History, then select Delete.
  22. Evolution is a blind watchmaker. Nothing drives it. It is change in frequency of alleles over time. Evolution can go backwards; it's still evolution. Adaptation is caused by mutation, which is random. There is no purpose. Time to pull out the whisky.
  23. Interesting. I wonder if people that are born blind initiate self-consciousness a bit later than sighted children.
  24. What you are searching for will not be found in science.
  25. It embodies the set of neural processes that occur within a brain and supplemented with signals from other parts of the body.
