  1. I have a 36" x 24" photograph. What would be the optimum resolution to scan it at so that the file natively prints at 18" x 12" without sampling again? I presume a photo printing shop's printer prints at 300dpi.
  2. It's better to stick to the General Relativity version. Although not wrong within its domain of applicability, it will get you to the Moon, GR explains it more completely. Even GR has a domain of applicability, and we know now it is not complete. It's more than adequate for us amateurs.
  3. Every discrete object in space is in freefall into some object, or gravitationally bound collection of objects, of higher mass/energy.
  4. It's a way of describing how you can travel continually without ever reaching an edge. Everything that is in freefall moves in geodesics, so any path an object takes will always be curvilinear in the big picture. It will only appear flat at local distances.
  5. There is no edge. Picture yourself as a 2D dot on the 2D surface (no up or down) of a sphere, there is no edge.
  6. They are also investigating if the retractable keel was up, which could reduce it's stability. Keels can be retractable for occasions docking in shallow harbours. The keel was 5m on this one.
  7. As we saw with covid, it only takes a few percent extra hospital admissions for health services to become strained to the limit. I think society needs to learn that being solely reactive to health threats could well be disastrous one day, with our increasing global mobility and population densities. Climate change causing an increasing exodus from the areas that become resource limited and productively barren with atmospherically hostile conditions can only exacerbate those issues. The increasing trend towards nationalism in the world and isolationist mentality caused by that will only aggravate that exodus.
  8. Physical contact can be via objects touched by the infected person if their hands carry the pathogen via body fluids.
  9. They are also ignorant that with increasing infection increases the chance of more dangerous, more transmissable variants; evolution.
  10. I mentioned this thought on an a FB page mentioning it. A poster says that's ok and won't be a problem for him and most people because it's a gays disease.
  11. Just shut up and stop turning every thread into spaghetti. .
  12. Mamod steam engine. Early 70s. Ran on Meths and had a steering rod through the chimney.
  13. This is not even a subject for discussion, really. It is almost a truism that something is worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. It's monetary value is subjective.
  14. The molecular configuration on the surface of a nanoparticle have specificity for certain predefined target cell surface features, where they interact and deliver the therapeutic substance to them. They can move around passively and stochastically in the circulation until it connects with the target that has compatible surface features

Looks like we are going to have to go back to analogue methods for important stuff. Stone tablets, pen and paper, and film photography and video. "Houston... we have a problem". Not only is democracy under threat, but authenticity is as well.

I'm getting really annoyed with having to think twice when I see manipulated images now on facebook. We are the lucky ones because we have references, being pre-internet, but it's going to be impossible for youngsters growing up now to differentiate fact from fiction.

He's been doing that methodically since he started, so that no one can see the board any more to play properly.
  18. I agree. I think one pandemic is enough to experience. I will happily forsake finding that out if a pandemic can be avoided. There is a vaccine for this, isn't there? To get started with anyway, given the mutations will likely accelerate with increasing exposure.
  19. If it comes to pass widely in the west, I am curious to see how many anti-vaxxers will refuse the jab given that this is highly cosmetically visible and can leave scars and skin discolouration.
  20. Van Gogh. He used colour to express emotions evoked by his subjects, rather than try to represent them verbatim.
  21. Art is a means isolating elements of our experience and perception for the purpose of sharing it.
  22. I've just installed Firefox and uBlock Origin on my Android tablet. There is no ads on this site after installing uBlock, which there was before I added uBlock.... yuk! In Firefox on Android if you click the 3 dots top right, select Extensions, then uBlock Origin you will see an 'Element Zapper'. Click on that, which will return you to the errant page and try clicking on the obstruction. See what happens. I don't have the issue, so can't replicate it. On PC, with uBlock Origin installed, if you right-click on the enshittification you should see a 'Block Element' entry. Click on that, then click on 'Create'. That will make an entry in the block list for that element. Don't be afraid to try the other blocking options in Settings, especially Fanboy's lists. You can temporarily disable ublock for a site by clicking on the broken blue circle icon if something breaks a site. Some secure sites like banks don't like it when they check for authorisation. As aside, I think it's a good idea to have an unmodified browser as well to act as a reserve in case something is amiss on a site you want to access and to eliminate whether your usual browser is at issue. It's very difficult to have a secure, privacy-based browser without sometimes breaking a site, like, as I said, banks. They have their own secure channels built in anyway.
  23. That's something I didn't know. Makes sense, they avoid programmed cell death and the fidelity of resultant copies degrades? I thought the telomeres helped to avoid that copy degradation, but the price was guaranteed senescence.
