  1. But their use in that application would, it seems, be deleterious to the environment at large, given their stability/persistence and bioaccumulative effects. In short, they are classed as contaminants outside specific applications. http://www.defence.gov.au/estatemanagement/governance/policy/environment/PFAS/docs/DefencePFASManagementFrameworkforConstructionandMaintenanceProjects.pdf
  2. Yes, this doesn't help. The geographical segregation, due to disparities in education/employment opportunities, which determines where one can live causes black and white ghettos. This perpetuates and reinforces the 'black and white' narrative. Although the person killed lived in an upmarket building, it's what's happening in deprived areas that spills over and feeds what happens elsewhere.
  3. Inertia is resistance to change of acceleration and is a function of mass and velocity. Acceleration due to gravity (free fall) is not affected by mass, so it should be clear that inertia does not affect free fall.
  4. I was hoping someone knowledgeable would respond to that to clarify.
  5. Yes, in a nutshell. It's a knee jerk reaction of fear or suspicion to anyone of colour.
  6. Well, blow me down, I've had that wrong for getting on half a century.
  7. The fastest way to get away from the cops is to co-operate. An innocent person would, generally, want to get it over and done with as quickly as possible.
  8. I can understand the relative slowness of saying anything; they need to get all the facts. What disturbs me is that he's black. They are disproportionately represented in police shootings.
  9. Thinking on: at the time of the incident she wasn't an active police officer and, as a civilian, walked into somebody's flat armed and shot him. This is a home invasion.
  10. The least armed officers can do is leave their firearms at their station when they sign off.
  11. Say we identified the factors influencing homosexuality and could apply them, would it be judicious to prevent such persons being born?
  12. The two I mentioned produce bulbs as well, so they need sunshine to make them.
  13. This is true. I was just thinking that one needs to consider the habitat where they evolved. For plants native to deciduous woods, like blue bells and snowdrops, for exampe, they would need to get their flowering phase over and done with by the time the leaves reach maximum density in the tree canopy above them, so they can exploit what direct sunlight there is.
  14. I think the answer lies in the amount of volatiles and their perceived aromaticity. Tropical fruits are generally more aromatic. I found this interesting Quora post:
  15. To quote a famous classical guitarist: "If you can't play it slowly, how can you play it quickly?".
  16. Tidal forces from the Sun and Moon contribute as well, it seems. The Earth is constantly having its shape changed slightly and that causes friction within its structure. I think the radioactive components surround the outer core and the solid centre part is where it is cooler. The inner core is increasing very slightly by mm every year.
  17. Yes, there seems to be a few classes of LDLs and not just one.
  18. Exactly. Ironically, when someone is dying, those same people pray for them to live. Work that one out.,
  19. I don't understand that bit.LDL levels are decreased by what? Maybe @CharonY does and can clarify. Here's the part from the abstract: EDit: Scrap that, I understand now. I should have prefaced that post with "generally".
  20. If one believes in a next life then one may treat this world like a toilet... which many do.
  21. That's what I guessed but didn't know any association with infection, so I had a doubt. FTFY. HDL is the good stuff and LDL is not. HDL moves fat out of cells and LDL moves it into them. From your link:
