Do you think string theory is based on a lie?
StringJunky replied to Achilles's topic in Quantum Theory
Any theory you come up with to explain something you can't observe, like strings, has to ultimately work consistently with the standard model, gravity etc. They can't just make ideas up in isolation. -
Do you think string theory is based on a lie?
StringJunky replied to Achilles's topic in Quantum Theory
You can call things what you like but ultimately their behaviour must connect and be consistent with what is observed even though you can't observe those things, like strings, directly. A theory either works or it doesn't and nobody supposes any working theory is a true mirror of nature in the final analysis but does bring us closer.. A lie is a wilful deception. -
I think all fancy handwriting does is tell you the level to which a person has trained to handwrite. My writing is scruffy and I loathe doing it.

U.S. government seeks Facebook help to wiretap Messenger
StringJunky replied to StringJunky's topic in Politics
But if they are, they can't use it as evidence because they would have to declare their source in court; the end result is the same. I agree with the last sentence. This all boils down to a general perception of lack of trust of the general public in governmental processes. As a personal anecdote: I was all for there allowing access in serious cases that involved the security services, but that changed when the UK government wanted to allow the same powers to local councils to chase poll tax evaders without seeking a warrant. The bar had been set too low and I became vehemently against it. It's got even worse since then with everybody being more connected. -
That makes you a binger.

Until then though it is secure. -

Yes, Ten oz, I agree, but how do you preserve the inherent security of end-to-end encryption and also be able to arbitrarily allow access for law enforcement purposes? If law enforcement can do it, some other criminally-minded person will be able to eventually and share it. -
I was on about in the beginning, when someone starts taking drugs. The withdrawal then is basically a hangover, which then becomes something a user dreads and actively seeks to avoid by consuming more. Did you ever have anyone say to you that you need the "hair of the dog" to sort out your hangover, and then hand you another drink? Yes, a controlled withdrawal is best in cases of long-term habituation.

Mostly, when people are experiencing "withdrawal symptoms" it's the effect of the body readjusting to the absence of the drug. Habitual users learn that if they repeat the dose at this point they can stave off that readjustment and then they eventually end up in that recurring addiction cycle. Even caffeinated coffee and tea consumption is the same; when the caffeine wears off, you feel edgy until you have another. The beverage doesn't give you "a lift" after a while using it, it just puts you back to what you think is 'normal'.

How Einstein's equivalence principle extends to the quantum world
StringJunky replied to beecee's topic in Relativity
If you fired two neutrally-charged quantum particles, say neutrons, on a parallel but usefully close path, they should eventually converge if gravity still had an effect at the quantum level, wouldn't they? -
It looks like the US administration is having another go, since that time with Apple.

An ex-user would be far more reliable. Current users are liable to just say anything that supports their activity.

A person can be severely psychologically addicted to cannabis such that it it consumes their whole waking life. In fact the psychological/habitual aspect is the main part of any drug addiction. With the exception of alcohol and barbiturates - in which unmonitored withdrawal can be lethal - the problem is mostly mental. Psychosomatic effects are very powerful and feel real to the afflicted and people feel genuinely ill but it's their mind and expectations driving the symptoms. Most physical addictions last about two weeks and then it's the mental side and habituation you have to deal with. People who actively take drugs are not the best sources for objective discussion on this subject.

No, to me, freedom is peace of mind.

It makes me laugh that some in an industry that functions on fantasy and pretence can be up in arms about not using 'authentic' people... duh!

This is good: https://www.livescience.com/49254-weak-force.html I might be talking out of my backside, but it seems to be a mechanism to allow an unbalanced, massive atom, wrt excess protons or neutrons in it, to convert one to the other, via changes in the quark configuration that makes up protons and neutrons, to achieve a more stable nuclear configuration. Nuclear-wise, everything wants to be iron, so they try to decay to that. The range of the weak force is only 1/10 the diameter of a proton.

You can't do anything that is considered distracting. You can't even hold a phone. If you have an accident it is reason for cause.

C'est la vie (shit happens). In the UK, you''d get nabbed by a copper but seeing as it passes in your country that bloke can take a hike... When in Rome...

Right. Thanks. -
Tumour size and probability of malignancy

They have inherent extra factors that make them prone besides a random mutation that may occur with increased mass? I appreciate type does matter i.e villous types are more prone. -
We should avoid willy-waving and just let the evidence speak.

I can see solar panels being on almost every new build roof .Autonomy of energy supply is the way to go... when the domestic battery storage is cheap enough. I think the newly developed photovoltaic stuff is embedded in plastic film that can be wrapped around or laid out on anything.
