Plenty of people have died using MDMA. There's no way of knowing what constitutes a lethal dose in a person until they reach that point.

Tumour size and probability of malignancy

Thank you Pavel. -
That's one way of looking at it I hadn't thought of. Plausible. The way I looked at it was that, as the import routes were blocked off from the traditional resin-dope countries, people were driven to grow it locally and that led to them pursuing and breeding ever stronger strains just because they could, whereas before that they were happy with the various strengths that came in and just went with the flow. Every now and again you got stuff, particularly sensimilla-types, as strong as now but not all the time but it was mostly relatively mild resin. That coupled with suppliers mixing the properly made resins with all manner of noxious bulking agents, which I think drove people even more to local growers or doing it themselves.

If pot had been legal some 30 years ago when they were locally wild strains that were exported, it might work in terms of harm reduction but it's too strong now and everything is skunk-related. Everybody wants to breed the next strongest variety and that increases the number of potential mental health casualties. I think the current status quo keeps it as low as it can be.. Changing the behaviour of drug addicts only comes from within and it's extremely rare for them to stop... except by dying. Whilst they are on them they don't care. Whether one uses an oppressive regime or thoughtful one they are going to get out of their heads and still do all the criminal activities to have more than they given by the state. Colour me cynical.

What changes internally in a growth - like an intestinal adenoma (pre-cancer) for example - that makes it malignant? Or why does increasing size mean it increases the chances of it becoming metastatic? Does the already disfunctioning cells increase in disorder in their DNA with each new replication or new generation?

Negatives and positives co-exist all the time. It's up to the individual to choose what they want to see.

I live a pretty hermit-like life but I interact with people as I meet them. You are only lonely if you want people; I'm solitary. One can have a purpose to live or one can not have a purpose, and be like a tramp who takes life as it comes... both are equally valid ways to live. Having a purpose only matters if it matters to you.

The maximum speed of transfer/propagation of information
StringJunky replied to geordief's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
Would things just interact as they do physically in a ftl scenario, like the baseball hits the other person, but there is just a time delay in the signal arriving about the event? The signal being just information. -

Do you have to be cleverer than Einstein to disprove his theories?

It's scorchin'' here... 30+. When you are used to 15-20ish, with lots of clouds, this is a bit much. Not been like this since probably '83. -
If you notice in your link, the tar is the heavier fraction of the oil left after the lighter fraction has evaporated. The tar (asphalt) is now being subject to anaerobic processes by bacteria and the final products are not yet known. Edit: Those tar pits are only about 38000 years old, so there's probably lots for them to do before they reach a final equilibrium.

Isn't evolution wonderful.

I do wonder how the UK's NHS is so resilient in that respect because I'm sure several Tory goverments would love to have got shot of it.

It seems coal came first and the coal, under heat and pressure, pyrolysed* into tars. * Pyrolysis - Pyrolysis is the thermal decomposition of materials at elevated temperatures in an inert atmosphere.[1] It involves the change of chemical composition and is irreversible. The word is coined from the Greek-derived elements pyro "fire" and lysis "separating". Pyrolysis is most commonly applied to the treatment of organic materials. It is one of the processes involved in charring wood, starting at 200–300 °C (390–570 °F).[2] In general, pyrolysis of organic substances produces volatile products and leaves a solid residue enriched in carbon, char. Extreme pyrolysis, which leaves mostly carbon as the residue, is called carbonization. The process is used heavily in the chemical industry, for example, to produce ethylene, many forms of carbon, and other chemicals from petroleum, coal, and even wood, to produce coke from coal. Aspirational applications of pyrolysis would convert biomass into syngas and biochar, waste plastics back into usable oil, or waste into safely disposable substances. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrolysis

If the sun disappeared Earth would still orbit for 8 mins?
StringJunky replied to Alfred001's topic in Relativity
Any action is information... I think. Maybe one of the physics guys will give a proper definition as I'm a bit vague on it myself. -
If the sun disappeared Earth would still orbit for 8 mins?
StringJunky replied to Alfred001's topic in Relativity
Yes, it is information. Mass-energy tells space-time how to bend and space-time tells mass-energy how to move. It takes some finite time for that to happen, which is because of c being the limit. -

StringJunky replied to Alfred001's topic in Relativity
c is the maximum speed limit for information to travel, so until the information from spacetime changes, it will continue as though it is in orbit -

Is that modelling like you do with gravity but with different values
