  1. Yes, that's a terrible attitude. Presidents should succeed or fail with the same instruments at hand.
  2. I hope there are mitigation plans in place by the civil service, or whatever you call your guys who directly manage the wheels of government.
  3. I think, given the amount of smoke, there's a fire somewhere... or a few.
  4. We had one or two people here that wanted to be straight and looking for some sort of medical intervention.
  5. Why dual boot? Why not just have two computers?
  6. I haven't had a days worry since XP. Now, that was a piece of poo. The OP has a malware or hardware problem giving it hiccups, methinks.
  7. This reminds me of a witty response by William Shatner, of Star Trek fame, upon being offered a left hand in greeting: "Oh, the hand you wipe with".
  8. Do you not understand what Zapatos posted?
  9. You need to wait and see if it reaches Phase III trials. Here's info about trials: http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/find-a-clinical-trial/what-clinical-trials-are/phases-of-clinical-trials
  10. Yes, of course. I should add: it's not the duration that matters but what happens in that time. I have experienced some terrific social intercourse with some people online that will never in happen in the flesh and converse with people of huge diversity... I feel no less fulfilled intellectually because they are ephemeral. That quote is awesome. I like people but I like my own company as well. I feel sorry for those who spend their life avoiding solitude and will have to face it in the autumn of their life when everyone around them has faded away. This is one lesson I will not have to learn.
  11. Be they online or in-the-flesh, they are all impermenant... eventually. Whether a friendship lasts a week or 30 years, when they are gone, they are gone.
  12. I've looked into this and concluded it was more productive to buy books or find images on the internet. Ideally, you want a phase contrast microscope to view unstained images - lots of money and skills to acquire. You'll lose nothing by looking at other peoples pictures. I know my answer is boring but the expense and time to get to where the pros are is not trivial.
  13. It's nice that some things are still like 'magic'.
  14. To me, 'parallel universes' is synonymous with 'It's turtles all the way down'
  15. I think the problem is that we can't see or sense the joins between the functional interfaces that make us what we are; we feel like we are one contiguous whole.
  16. There will be plenty of samples of everybody's bacteria all over the toilet/bathroom area, so shutting the lid is a bit like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. Closing the lid will probably actually increase your bacterial dosage because the upsplash from flushing will sprinkle on the underside of the lid and then you, or the next person, puts their fingers on the underside of the lid to lift it, coating their fingers with bacteria transported in the splash water.
  17. Could they be reciprocating beacons to food supplies, or other information? I'm inclined to think there's some kind of symbiosis going on.
  18. It seems to me, everything, be it spacetime, radiation or particles, distils down to abstractions. The ontological nature of spacetime is no more or less difficult to understand than particle or radiation fields; they all deal with values distributed in a co-ordinate system. I should say, that's probably as 'ontological' as it can get,
  19. You can't predict emergent outcomes, so it seems to me that we'll likely walk into backwards.
  20. If you want to be fluent at it, think in it. Perhaps pick a role model for using as an example for speaking and one for writing; analyse and then emulate them.
  21. Radiation pressure is momentum transfer from photons.
  22. But nature could be the inner workings of whatever deity a faith-based scientist believes in and can study them without compromise to their scientific ability or create any inner conflict, if they choose.
