  1. We measure time in discrete steps, but it's actually continuous i.e undivided, or smoothly progressive.
  2. Yes, I've read this too, but I'm just leaving it at ambient 16-20c and experiencing the different tastes. I started the culture pretty warm - 28-30c - with a beer warming mat to get the population up quickly, so that the undesirable micros didn't get a chance to dominate. I had an issue that put me bordering on diarrhoea and I surmised it might be down to an incomplete gut biota, such that my gut lining was somewhat inflamed. The body thinks it's being attacked, so, as a result of the inflammation, which is protective, the fluid absorption was compromised, leading to watery stools. Everything seems to be normal now. The underlying reason, I guessed, was I don't eat enough fresh food to keep the biota maintained and this seems to have fixed it, I think. I still have to address my overall diet though. I've come to realize that veg variety is not just about vitamins, fibre and minerals, but also inoculating the gut lining regularly with diverse microbiota. Being in my mid-sixties now, my body complains much more about not eating properly. I'm trying to halve my consumption as well because I don't need it... the evidence is in my expanding belly!
  3. 25-30g in 750ml gin. Some go to 50g/750ml. Slightly crush to rupture the skins.
  4. DNA can't replicate perfectly for all time in an organism. Even without external agents, it will degrade eventually, to lethal effect.
  5. Re my entrance into milk kefir making. I'm sold. Man, is it sour and fizzy! I think it's still stabilising as it's gone from sour, cheesy, creamy to a cleaner, sour/semi-fizzy taste and mouth feel. Going to try water kefir next. I've got this milk kefir on a daily routine now.
  6. Right. Missed that. I ask myself: Why try so hard to find a difference between ethnic groups when the only motive, I can think of, is to create division and conflict. All this effort when the noise floor clearly exceeds the level of the signal.
  7. As for general intelligence being fixed, the OP has not considered neuroplasticity.
  8. It's going to be a whole new learning curve.
  9. It should be the car manufacturer, just as if any part failed not due to the driver's incompetence or negligence. If the owner fails to follow mandated protocols in their vehicle's upkeep, then they are liable. It is a sticky one with grey areas, I think, with some not thought of or encountered yet.
  10. They are still just spontaneous brain farts, it's just that some hit the bull's eye of reflecting nature. You've still got to do the slog of describing them in concordance with consensus in that field.
  11. Nylon is like Dracula: tough as old boots in the dark, but turns to dust in the light. Lost a few big fish from using old nylon fishing line.
  12. StudioT can probably answer that. Maybe sticking a label over hole should suffice? I'm only thinking of a pinhole.
  13. Part of the issue is because the contents are put in hot then sealed. The airspace cools down and creates a partial vacuum, increasing the friction at the screw thread interfaces. As suggested, you can heat it up to equalise the pressure, or pop a hole in the lid.
  14. Collectively, the more freedom there is, the more chaotic the population movements will be. It decreases efficiency for everyone. How can moving towards a stochastic picture, aka 'freedom', be more beneficial to anyone? Only the worst of human nature can thrive in that Darwinian environment.

They often come out with nonsense. It's definitely just hype at this point in time.
  16. Yeah, there is a lot of focus on gut biota. Aren't some researchers suggesting early infant exposure to peanuts? My hay fever started late in life. Got hammered last year with it, but this year just one or two episodes. I was a gardener for a long time, so I don't know ff that triggered me.
  17. Try installing VLC Media Player or KM Player and see if it works then. Windows 11 apparently no longer has native support for DVD players. Install player, reboot and open a disk in the player interface.
  18. Yes, that would sort it.
  19. OT, but I've just started making about 300ml milk Kefir a day. On my 4th cycle and it's gone from cheesy tasting to more of a tangy, clean yoghurt. I've found it surprisingly easy to get into a routine. Still got to nail down my contamination avoidance protocol though. I think I'll do water kefir as well. Reading this thread kicked me up the arse to make this itch a reality! If it goes slimy, I read it might be Pediococcus producing polysaccharide chains of some sort. Apparently, not harmful, but is indicative of contamination. Would it be worth soaking the ginger in metabisulphite first to sterilize? Yeast can still utilise a bit of it to make glycerol iirc, so it shouldn't harmed. I learnt that as a way to make wine smoother in texture.
  20. Just came across this in AP: https://apnews.com/article/byheart-baby-formula-recall-botulism-679c822667df767a278b166c7142e68f The formula uses 'organic' sources. I wonder if that might be a clue?
  21. To function, but not to survive. Add moisture and they'll start.
  22. That's paywalled, you can download or read it from here: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/6490925_Infant_botulism
