  1. How is it then that a hammer and feather dropped on the Moon from the same height will strike the surface at the same time? Is it because they are part of the same system sharing the Moon's gravity?
  2. Can we leave it there? I can't be arsed ..I know the outcome.
  3. If Ebola is on the rise, why is Big Pharma struggling to find vaccine trial volunteers? From a 17th June post:
  4. There have been many human activities in our history that were considered 'normal' but are now not.
  5. Yes, apparently it is mitigating somewhat the full brunt of the warming trend.
  6. Yes, pollutants can act as cloud condensation nuclei. The irony of air pollution is that it increases the albedo of the planet and helps to keep it cooler by reflecting solar radiation back out to space..
  7. Thinking further on this scenario, I think It might be better for me to understand and simplifying by removing the variable of the difference in volume/radii: Let A be the same volume as B,C and D. but only 5% of the mass of B,C and D. This way, the centres and extremities are equal distances. The principle of equivalence says that they will touch at the same time. Is this correct? Everything else about the setup remains the same as before in a vacuum; air resistance is irrelevant. Edited; Altered question for clarity.
  8. Homeopathy anyone? We'll just have to lie back and think of England when he becomes King then William can carry on the proper monarchy again.
  9. Asking at the Overclockers forum is probably the best place.
  10. Yes, I'm not querying that. I'm not up on current standards and backward compatibilities.
  11. Devices draw power, it is not forced on them, so it can't be too much... assuming other parameters are the same. Too much is better than too little.
  12. High levels of aerobic exercise, with associated increased calories, will increase your physical endurance but this doesn't necessary translate to increased longevity. You are increasing your metabolic rate, which means that your cell lines are replicating more frequently, so cellular senescence is likely to occur sooner. This is referencing the principle I mentioned earlier. And no, doing bugger all will not increase not increase your lifespan. Exercise levels should be sufficient for maintenance of physical health.
  13. You mean burning extra calories through exercise?
  14. "Tradition", as often used, means: Only as far back as necessary that supports my argument.
  15. The basic idea relates to rates of metabolism. The slower the metabolism, the longer it takes for telomeres to shorten, which are finite. There is a limited number of times a cell-line can replicate before malfunctions start to occur. I think it's roughly about 120 years for human if they get everything right and fate allows. If you eat to satiety all the time you will mature faster and die earlier because the cells will reach senescence sooner. The picture is actually a lot more complicated and nuanced, with plenty of as-yet unknowns, but that's the quick-and-dirty thrust of it.
  16. Calorie restriction and starvation, in his context, are two very different scenarios. It's like saying a slim person and an anorexic are the same. 'Starvation' and 'anorexic' have pathological connotations. It's matter of degree between the two states in each example. Living in a state of constant nutritional satiety.is increasingly thought to be less healthy than a diet just erring on the side of hunger. Compare dietary-induced morbidities between the US and Japan
  17. Just a guess. Floating sand particles (Silica/glass) may be scintillating in the moonlight.
  18. Aluminium has a higher specific capacity for a given mass than copper, but copper has a higher specific heat capacity for a given volume, by virtue of its higher density; this is what matters here. When you are comparing two pieces of tape, they are going to have the same thickness, width and length.... which makes the copper tape have a higher total specific heat capacity when comparing like-for-like volumes.
  19. Cheers. Learnt something today.
  20. If the matter under scrutiny is the jurisdiction of individual states, then Obama may as well sit on his hands and do nothing... getting 50 autonomous states to harmonise has about as much chance as a monkey typing Shakespeare. The system is fundamentally flawed the way it is in its lack of a centralised executive, administering the matters under discussion. All imo of course. I think Klaynos is on the right track about analysing the situation state by state, There's no point comparing with the UK. US police is effectively a paramilitary, it seems,
  21. Probably a good idea to post what games you play to give people an idea of the load.
