When that happens it should present you with an input box to type in the image's URL. You aren't seeing the box are you? What browser are you using?

Are computer passwords REALLY that unsafe?
StringJunky replied to EWyatt's topic in Computer Science
There will be a limit on how many times an incorrect password can be entered so brute forcing a bank account password won't be viable or the chances are astronomical of doing it within the set number of allowed attempts. You might find this interesting...bear in mind this is describing a 128bit encryption system and a lot of systems now use 256bit encryption: "Modern cryptographic systems are essentially unbreakable, particularly if an adversary is restricted to intercepts. We have argued for, designed, and built systems with 128 bits of security precisely because they are essentially unbreakable. It is very easy to underestimate the power of exponentials. 2^128 is a very big number. Burt Kaliski first came up with this characterization, and if he had a nickel for every time I tell it, he could buy a latte or three. Imagine a computer that is the size of a grain of sand that can test keys against some encrypted data. Also imagine that it can test a key in the amount of time it takes light to cross it. Then consider a cluster of these computers, so many that if you covered the earth with them, they would cover the whole planet to the height of 1 meter. The cluster of computers would crack a 128-bit key on average in 1,000 years." http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2006/07/brute-force-key-attacks-are-for-dummies.html The whole article's interesting. -

From your laptop's manual: To create a set of recovery discs: 1. Select Start > All Programs > Recovery Manager > Recovery Manager.Recovery Manager opens. 2. Click Advanced Options. If you are operating the computer on battery power, you will be prompted to connect to AC power before you can go to the next step. 3. Click Recovery disc creation, and then click Next. 4. Follow the on-screen instructions. See if you can get it to make them, mine needed two dvd's -

What are the numbers/letters after the CQ60 part of the model name? Mine is: CQ60 212EM. You should find it on the underside next to the Windows sticker. Did you make your HP recovery disks? You have this option if you didn't and will make the process much easier. -

I killed it by overstepping my abilities...I broke two unfixable wires on the motherboard trying to get to the fan. What's the size of your C; drive? How much is used up on it? How big is your external drive (free space)? How big is the recovery drive...12GB? -

I'm familiar with that laptop...got a dead one in the bedroom. Have you got an external hard drive available? What I'm thinking is to image the whole hard drive and store it. Put that image on to the new one then use the recovery drive (which will be in the image to put a fresh operating back by pressing F11 at boot. No need for a Vista disk this way. This is assuming your disk will stay stable long enough to take an image. -

a couple questions about stars
StringJunky replied to brandoncotten's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
ACG52 is correct: about the rarity which is once every fifty years in our galaxy...and that's 100KLYrs across. The furthest visible star, in absolutely perfect seeing conditions, is about 1200 LYrs away so the frequency is even lower for the chance of seeing one with the naked eye. "Because astrophysicists had inferred that the likely sources are mainly massive stars, which end their lives as supernovae, they could estimate the rate of such supernova events. They obtained a rate of one supernova every 50 years - consistent with what had been indirectly found from observations of other galaxies and their comparison to the Milky Way." http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/Integral/SEMACK0VRHE_0.html -
Gravity is the curvature of space spacetime caused by matter. Don't forget GR is a geometric model that encompasses time as well.

Here's download link for Vista Ultimate. Read the whole article and understand it but try the upgrade version first (X-63452)...download the other files as well in case you need to change plan. These are needed to make a full version. http://www.askvg.com/direct-download-links-download-official-original-and-untouched-windows-vista-rtm-with-sp1-setup-files-32-bit-and-64-bit/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+AskVG+%28AskVG%29 You will need to remove a particular file in the iso so that you get the choice of which edition you need. Ultimate Edition contains all versions of Windows Vista. Scroll down to the W7 Image Edition Switcher download link and get it. http://www.askvg.com/how-to-choose-desired-windows-7-edition-version-during-setup/ This might be a learning curve with no guarantee of success as I don't know your level. I've done this before but not done a clean install from an upgrade disk which the X-63452 disk is. It might need to be modified into a full disk. It might not be as straightforward a procedure as I might wish. Don't do it if you are pushed for time. You also need your pc drivers. Note for mods: this is totally legal as he is using his own product key which is what a license relates to...that's what you pay for. -
I think it would be a good idea to ban commenting on the issuing of rep points in-thread. I don't use the multi-quote feature so can't comment on that. You could try opening another window on the same thread and extract a quote from that...you could refresh that same page as you get a new notification. Basically running two pages in the same thread in parallel. Don't know if this would work.
-
The real-time notification that someone has posted is neat.

Can someone tell me how to link a word in a post to a url, it's not the same in this new software? When I click on "link" icon in the posting UI and then click "Link to anchor in text" and put the url in it says "no anchors available in document". How to create an anchor?

There's downsides in both scenarios: giver visible or not visible. We have had members lamenting the lack transparency in the old system and I've thought it too but the reason was that it was not technically possible. Now that we do have that facility available would it be worth trialling it, say for 3 months, and see how it pans out? Have a sticky up where people could put ongoing feedback to highlight problems, give solutions for that scenario and if it clearly doesn't work remove the visibility. It's very important for ordinary members to report incidents of unfairness to the mods whether they are experiencing it themselves or see it happening to someone else...if it's not cricket report it. I'm writing this just as Phi has posted and concur with his last comment; don't neg someone for an answer sincerely given. Give a person a good opportunity to assess the mainstream evidence first and only if they receive it and reject with ill-grace.

What version is it...Ultimate, Pro, Premium? -
I concur with iNow if it's possible.

No. Didn't think it was a good idea. I can only see an area for mine. I also noticed when you hover over the rep point area a cross appears and the Report button darkens. I'm going to rep you then click the X to see what happens ok? Edit: It brings up a choice to ignore that person's signature or all signatures but there is no visible option to reverse it...I can't put your sig back now.
-
I don't think it's desirable for a person's warning points to be public. It'll just give them even worse karma than they already might have and won't feel like changing their behaviour...best keep that sort of thing between the mods and themselves.
-
If you go into your profile and click on the Reputation tab you will see all your posts with rep and presumably, if Cap'n turns it on, who gave you it.
-
I think yes to public too. We can all police it better together I think if we can all see it and it will make people more likely to think first before hitting the button. We didn't have it before and I think it's worth a trial.
