Will polygamy/gay marriage be legalised everywhere one day in the future?
StringJunky replied to Mr Rayon's topic in Politics
Only if a 'scientist' is absolutely certain he is right which is the fundamental basis of any Faith ...properly trained good scientists have a high level of confidence in something based on probability which is not the same as certainty...they will dump an idea if it's wrong, therefore. scientific practice in the right hands is not akin to a religion. -
Here's a paper on the effects of music training on the brain: http://www.musicianbrain.com/papers/Wan_Schlaug_MusicMaking_BrainPlasticity.pdf

You might find this interesting: "First Direct Evidence of Neuroplastic Changes Following Brainwave Training ScienceDaily (Mar. 12, 2010) — Significant changes in brain plasticity have been observed following alpha brainwave training. A pioneering collaboration between two laboratories from the University of London has provided the first evidence of neuroplastic changes occurring directly after natural brainwave training. Researchers from Goldsmiths and the Institute of Neurology have demonstrated that half an hour of voluntary control of brain rhythms is sufficient to induce a lasting shift in cortical excitability and intracortical function." http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/03/100310114936.htm

The other command worth trying is chkdsk in xp and chkdsk /r /f in Vista/W7. This one executes on a reboot. It's important not to disturb it whilst running. Failing that try uninstalling and reinstalling your printer''s software.

Open a command prompt: Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. Type: sfc.exe /scannow then press Enter. Insert installation disk if prompted with XP. This command checks for corrupt files and if possible repairs them.

I will do. Thinking about it, he said when he puts his hand on the metal frame it hits him so it seems the soles of his shoes maybe acting as an insulator.
-
My nephew brought to my attention that he gets electric shocks when climbs off his trampoline. This is new knowledge to me as I would have thought the metal frame and metal springs would automatically discharge the static to the ground as it was created by him slightly rubbing his feet against the fabric with each jump. Is it wearing shoes that causes the static around his built up around his body to be isolated from the trampoline preventing it being discharged through it...would bare feet negate it? I'm interested in the physics and also by what method/equipment it can be avoided or reduced.

I meant with respect to the subject at hand...I apologise for appearing too general.

Societal responsibility towards its citizens as a whole trumps personal liberty everytime and so it should.

It's not showing. Does it show the picture in Settings > Profile > Change Avatar > Your Current Avatar and are you using Jpeg jpg png or gif formats which are allowed? And is it within the size limit of 120 x 100 pixels?

It's illegal to eat, read, smoke and manually use a phone in the UK whilst driving where I live. I suppose the attention and possible bias on mobile phones is because it's the new kid on the block in accident statistics and it's full impact on driver safety has not yet been fully assessed or maybe even just coming to light. Of all the other activities you mentioned, mobile phones are by far the most attention-distracting and hence the attention drawn to it. The laws, in time in your country, will probably tighten around the other activities as well like it has in mine...basically you can't do any thing that may remove your hands from the wheel or avert your eyes for any significant time from the road.

Mooey That video is, imo, an object lesson and explanation in verifying sources. With or without his 'conflict of interest' (which is trivial by the way) everything he says holds true...it is nothing different to what is uttered here from time but just encapsulated and delivered in an excellent manner. Nice one.

954 drivers (2%) killed people or were killed as result of mobile phones but how many people were affected by the deaths of those people...thousands would be reasonable guess I think.. Simultaneous phone use and driving is a cocktail of activities with a high potential for killing someone...commonsense is all one needs really to know that it's really not a good idea. Sometimes, although not necessarily by design, statistics gloss over and minimise the true impact. Converting this apparently trifling little number of 2% into 954 people, I find my perspective changes what it really means. That's the best part of 3 families a day in the USA alone losing someone as a consequence of mobile phones. It's not trivial and above all it's easily preventable...that's the saddest part.

Me boring, just got a picture and resampled it to the appropriate size.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "distracted driving," where the driver's attention is focused on an activity other than the road ahead, is a growing problem. In fact, the proportion of fatalities linked to distracted drivers rose from 10 percent in 2005 to 16 percent in 2009. While the overall number of U.S. traffic deaths is on the wane--from 43,510 in 2005 to 33,808 in 2009--the percentage of fatalities associated with driver distraction is on the rise. Nearly one in five (18 percent) of all fatal distracted-driving crashes last year reportedly involved cell phones as the distraction, according to a new NHTSA study. In those crashes, the phone was either in use at the time of the crash, or was "in the presence of the driver" when the accident occurred. http://www.pcworld.com/article/205795/cell_phonerelated_driving_deaths_on_the_rise_govt_study.html The NHTSA Study the article refers to.

Very illuminating for me Mooey...worth watching.

From what I can tell it's just a series of stills of a subject in motion that are then run in a loop. http://www.instructables.com/id/Create-an-animated-Avatar/step2/Get-the-screenshots/

That sounds like good therapy because this action allows you to initially express the physical element of your distress but the act and goal of splitting it further and more finely with each successive stroke forces you to focus on the job at hand gradually redirecting you from what caused your distressed state in the first place thus causing it to take a backseat in your mind and returning you to a state of calmness.

Like Length is that which is measured by a ruler.
-
You are taking it here a different way and to a higher level to that which I intended. I just meant in simple terms of a space, the volume and position of which can be observer defined; expressed as some co-ordinates ie the observer chooses what the size and position of the space is. I was trying to come up with a simple and broad definition of 'space'. It's good to read your more qualified take on it though because I want to learn and understand the convention.
-
You could define space as: that which is confined within some arbitrary co-ordinates ie it's observer-dependent. If something has the potential to be occupied and therefore measured, it exists. Nothing, by it's very definition, can't be measured as it doesn't exist but it's one of those words that has a meaning very much dependent on context. For the sake of discussive clarity I don't think Space and Nothing should be seen as synonymous...they are two totally different concepts...one exists and the other doesn't. To summarise: Space is that which is not occupied and Nothing is that idea which suggests an absent of all things. IMO.
