    God Game

Similar to Editharan, I took a hit on the Evolutionay question saying that it was true but then I demanded later that the existence of God required proof. As far as I'm concerned, Evolution is to all intents and purposes a fact....it has evidence...God has none.

  3. Sorry if I've offended you but I was viewing the matter with a dispassionate and factual attitude thus my words reflect that.
  4. The UK's SAS aim to hit the Medulla Oblongata, which is the autonomic control centre...this consciously shuts down and physically immobilises the target as quickly as possible presumably bringing a speedy death.
  5. It's best to rescue any data you want and then reinstall everything. Next time round when you've reinstalled your system learn and get into the habit of making images of your system then you won't have to go through the hassle of reinstalling your whole system again. I use Macrium Reflect...here's a link to a tutorial about it and download link for it. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/7363/macrium-reflect-is-a-free-and-easy-to-use-backup-utility/
  6. Playing in front of a mirror can be a good aid for self-correction...helps objectivity. Apart from the obvious like posture , picking/fretting technique and overcoming self-conciousness if you watch your hands in the mirror instead of directly, after a while one should be able to play 'blind' better when you take the mirror away...seems to encourage me to rely on feel (muscle memory) more rather than sight somehow. Don't read into this that I know much about playing because I don't but I do think a fair bit about learning methods.
  7. When I learnt of that saying, which is not attributable to me, I took slight umbrage as much as one or two have here (I'm self-taught in a few things) but the more I thought about it I realised how true it is. With respect to musical instruments one must be careful not to learn and practice mistakes which a teacher would help one avoid...if you are mindful of this idea you can avoid that pitfall when you teach yourself. The full quote as it turns out which is by Benjamin Franklin: " Learn of the skilful; he who teaches himself has a fool for a master."

  9. You maybe right. How do we know that women are not already adequately represented given their present level of interest as a group? By that I mean Science and Tech may be naturally a minority interest amongst the female population....it doesn't follow necessarily that distribution of career aspirations amongst women should mirror that of men. My hunch is that people like Mooey and Xitten et al here are not as common in the general female population as their type are in the male population...the distribution of intellectual capability may be on a par between the sexes but the types of interest prevalent in each may not be, in this case Science and Tech.
  10. The sonic transformation does indeed seem miraculous when it's sorted...if the system fan is going full speed trying to compensate for the restricted airflow an uneven obstruction of lint and dust can knock the fan blade off balance and make it sound like it needs replacing when it doesn't. I've learnt the hard way to always buy a laptop where the fan/heatsink asssembly is accessible from the back and not from the top which can take ages and much cursing moving other components out of the way!. Given that laptops are placed anywhere, including linty and dusty surfaces, like clothes, being able to clean the fan assembly easily is important IMO.
  11. A flat stiff board of wood or plastic should suffice....you should just need a clear space under the laptop like that when you leave it on a table top to allow air intake....does it overheat on a table? If it does your fan and heatsink probably want cleaning of dust and/or reseating with new thermal paste.
  12. In fairness to the BBT show, the female nerds are depicted in the same spirit as the the male characters... as equally odd!
  13. Whether something gives one goosebumps or not is dependent on whether you can identify with the concept or emotion being relayed in that particular form....if one doesn't feel it it doesn't mean one' ears are dead it just means one is not 'in tune' with it for whatever reason. You come across as a snob as well and don't 'get' it in spite of your 'long experience'. There is no absolute frame of reference or criteria by which music can be judged qualitatively...it is unique to each individual given the many different paths we each tread through life what touches us musically. Vive la difference? Discussions on music certainly brings out the elitist in some people.
  14. Why should richness and complexity be held as the benchmark by which all music should be judged? There are other styles that have simple melodies and carefully chosen periods of silence that can be equally rewarding and aesthetic...less can be more sometimes. Bignose was not pushing this point that you have misinterpreted but I will! The Wall was a popular album in terms of sales but in terms of sheer ubiquity (air play and persistence in charts, polls etc), general reverence and mass consumption over the years Dark Side blows it away. Dark Side also appears, on reflection, to have a timeless quality that The Wall lacks (as a whole piece) which will ensure it's existence into the future. I can see Dark Side still being played and appreciated a hundred years from now but not The Wall because it's layout and presentation ties it to it's era but Dark Side's does not because the sonic quality and concepts embodied within it will still respectively excite and be relevant to any future generation that hears it...the human condition will always be a source of angst and interest which it portrays so well. I'm trying to be critically objective here but I adore both of those albums. Dark Side deserves the accolade of 'truly popular' because of its consistent continued existence within the public conciousness against which it has few peers.
  15. Marat I used to have the same closed minded exclusive mentality as you when i was teenager in the Seventies but towards Pink Floyd, Genesis...Rock reached it's zenith in terms of large amounts of complexity then. The beauty of music is not only measured by its complexity...there is joy to be found in simplicity and judicious repetition as well...it can excite the visceral side of ones nature. Music can be enjoyed on so many levels..it's a shame to chase just one aspect.
  16. I Googled: SMS GMAIL ALERTS FILTERS. Here's two results: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-setup-free-sms-alerts-for-urgent-emails-in-gmail/ http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2412700/gmail_sms_alerts_free.html I'm on gmail and am notified to my phone but I get it via internet with it being a Blackberry Curve. I might have a play with the filters and sms side of it later. Post back if you suss it.

  20. I suspect that when the revenue stream for a particular product reaches a plateau, or is in sight, a dominant company like MS artificially creates a state of obsolescence by bringing out a new format that is partly or completely incompatible with the older one. Companies, it seems to me, aren't interested in steady streams...they want continual growth hence the need to keep creating demand albeit artificially. It all boils down to maintaining investment potential for speculators/shareholders so any projected share price (i.e. up) looks viable enough for them to invest or to continue doing so. A crap financial model really because it creates boom/bust cycles in the bigger picture of the national/global economy due to excessive speculator mobility causing extreme market fluctuations. Maximising revenue for the shortest possible shelf-life are the watchwords unfortunately not steady streams and durability. From this example one can see how the microcosm affects the macrocosm when it's replicated in sufficient numbers....multiply this mindset across the globe and you have a primary contributor to the state of the current global economy IMO.

  22. The value of reflective beads for road safety is well understood it would seem and has been around since the 30's. I've seen a reflective coating manufacture (glass beads in it) suggest using it on black surfaces for artistic purposes but not on the road so far. I found this quite educative with good close up photos: http://www.virginiadot.org/business/resources/Materials/MCS_Study_Guides/bu-mat-PaveMarkCh2.pdf Currently, the way they try and deal with visibility of the lines in wet conditions is to make the beads big enough to protrude above the water line but they are prone to snowplough damage if made too big.
  23. How about using a black formulation of the white road paint with the reflective bits in it...that might negate the glare? What you would get then is a broken up glossy surface.
  24. Barbiturates can have the same lethal withdrawal consequences as alcohol if not done carefully with a heavy user.
  25. Yes, I read that as well. True originality is a rare beast it would seem.
