  1. What this paper is trying to do is add extra time dimensions to quantum theory. It is similar to M-Theory adding 7-dimensions to space. I don't think that it is as easy to add time dimensions as it is to add space dimensions though. I would wait some time to see if this is actually just as revolutionary as M-Theory though or if it just crazy. Remember, string theory was initially laughed at, but right now I don't buy into extra time dimensions.
  2. A more powerful calculator could easily evaluate such expressions exactly. Try using an HP-49g+ or use the free computer algebra system Maxima. I have used Maxima to evaluate things as large as 128^65536. Unfortunately, I do not think there is a fast method to evaluate random exponents of random numbers manually.
  3. I know this is the classical physics forum, but you can never know how far you are from the mirror. The uncertainty principle will allow you to accurately measure how far you are from the mirror, but you would not know it's velocity so it could be moving away from you causing relativistic length dilation. Also, in alternate histories the mirror could be different lengths away from you.
  4. True, but either way the anchor is still not exerting any power due to the abscence of work.
  5. According to the Wikipedia solder has a melting point of about 450 C and is made of mostly tin and lead . Tin mealts at 239.93 C. Lead mealts at 327.461 C.
  6. It is the set that is represented as {0,1}. It is just a simple set with two elements.
  7. In the event one would want a fancy CAS that can do 3d graphing and symbolic manipulation, Maxima is a good free alternative to Mathematica. There is also a nice graphical frontend called WxMaxima .
  8. A law is something that is axiomatic and assumed to be true. A theorem is something that is deductively derived from a law or group of laws. For example, the Pythagorean theorem is critically dependant on Euclid's Fifth Axiom (the parallel postulate), which is an example of a law. A law is not necessarily always unchallengable. When Euclid's Fifth Axiom is negated, hyperbolic and eliptic geometries can exist.
  9. The first task which must be done is to integrate the power with respect to time so that the situation can be analysed at a single point in time. This means that work is dealt with instead of power. The current does work on the boat. The boat is not moved because the coefficent of friction (mu, dimensionless) times the weight (mass times gravitational acceleration) of the boat is greater than the amount of force the water exerts. The current does exert a force against the boat. The bottom of the river also exerts an equal force in the opposite dirrection through friction. Because both forces cancel the boat is not moved and no work is done becuase there is no change in linear displacement (dx). In the absence of friction, the boat would move down the river regardless of the anchor. In conclusion the anchor causes a force to be exerted in the opposite dirrection of the current, but does not do work or have power (dW/dt).
