Thorium oxidation through an oxidated metal
RyanJ replied to sungmintd8's topic in Inorganic Chemistry
Yes I think it would be hotter. Good luck containing this stuff - most metals and most solids will melt at those temperatures. I've seen thus suff (Iron(III) thermite) melth through a half foot steel block with little effort, thats only about 2500 degrees centigrade, you'll be talking about 3000+ for yours I'd think Very dangrous, not reccomended unless you are shure you can contain this stuff and are shure you know what you are doing and can verify the purity of the reactants as once the reaction starts you will not be able to stop it... Cheers, Ryan Jones PS:@jdurg thanks for the information -
Equations for the theories - Where to find them? Hi there everyone! Does anyone happen to know where I can find the equations used in theories like string theory? These will probably have to use what so ever too me (I do not yet understand them but someday I may ) - I'd just like to look at them fopr now and use them later. If anyone knows any internet sites that have them or any books that have them then please let me know Cheers, Ryan Jones

Its kind of hard to explain, I'm not the best explainer and I'm no expert on anything anyway but I'll give it my best shot You know any particle can exist as a wave or a particle, the wave-particle duality well forces can also be thought of as particles called carrier particles. So, a specific vibration pattern on a string creates the carrier particle for gravity and thats how it explains gravity and the same applies for all the other forces - the only difference is that they are a different vidration on a string Although I am not shure how they know what frequency donates a type of particle and why there are so many different frequencies and why there seem to be so few particles. there are theories about this and some should be testable by the Large Hadron Collider once it is finished - they hope to create some barge and unusual particles through the collisions. This is a vast topic and I don't have a lot of the answers as I don't know all that much about this topic. I have some links that I have read and have provided some insight into this subject; I'll post them and see if you can make any use of them too http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/String_theory http://www.superstringtheory.com/ http://www.sukidog.com/jpierre/strings/ http://www.nuclecu.unam.mx/~alberto/physics/string.html Cheers, Ryan Jones

Trace Elements / Minerals - What are they used for?
RyanJ replied to RyanJ's topic in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Ah... right. So some are used as parts of enzymes (Probably part of the active sites) and also in neurological signals? Right Ok so then do you have a description of why exess of these can be toxic. I'm surprised Selenium is there because its actually quite toxic! Cheers, Ryan Jones -
Some in this thread require only minimal chemistry knowledge and basic materials to produce Hydrochloric acid. You are probably better off buying this stuff yourself though - its not too expensive and quite easy to get hold off A search of the forum should return more results for you also Cheers, Ryan Jones

Sounds right, in the same way as big things like to become smaler and more stable (Thats why large, unstable nucleii decay into smller and more stable ones) Cheers, Ryan Jones

I'd say it is the part of the mind thats always working in the background, it analyzes what you are doing, comparing it to things you have done in the past etc. It looks for dangers and tells you thinks that you may not otherwise notice. things of that nature. Its sort of like that little voice in your mind that check what you are doing. You could even say that your memory and any part of your brain that is not active if your subonsious because its doing things that you may not actually be aware of. Certainly can. I watched a show about a fireman who went into a building with an uneasy feeling, he quickly called his team out and soon after the building collapsed. it turns out he has seen something like it before and his brain had told him (by giving him the ueasy feeling) that he should get out fast. I'd say thats one of the examples where your subconsious mind acts to help you. You could say all thoughts reside in your subconsious untill you actually start thinking about them. I;ve had numerous experiences where I have been working on a problem, left it for a while and came back with the right answer. This suggests that my mind was working in the background all the rest of the time trying to work out the problem. So you could say it stays in the subconsious untill its called for like a program in a computers memory. This one is a bit more complicated. According to psycology there are three "parts" of your mind, the ID, the Ego and the Super Ego - all are constantly arguing with each other and eventually come to a desicion about whats right and whats not. You could say the subconsious influences your actions by helping you to aviod danger and in other instances help you to solve problems but as for actually taking control if your mind I would not think so because its basically only working in the background so your brain dooes not overload with all the information its working on - like an input fiter then Cheers & Hope that helps, Ryan Jones

I did say that Organic peroxides would probably be formed leading to a boom... Looks like you guys already removed it - I would have removed it if I had been here to do so Cheers (I meant no harm really...) Ryan Jones

Hi everyone. I have an idea that may be interesting - an articles section. People would write an article and post it for everyone else too see and use. Say for example you could post an article on using trigonometry or the making of Copper Oxide (Only an example). These would obviously have to be validated and made shure they are safe to post first by a member of staff but this could be a useful idea. Does anyone have any oppinions on this to share? Cheers, ryan Jones

Hi everyone! I've read on numerous occasions about all these trace minerals and elements required to keep you healthy but my questions is what are they all used for? there are things like Iron that are used to make the haem group in haemoglobyn - the part that carries the Oxygen in red blood cells. What about all those other ones? Does anyone have a list of the trace elements rerquired and what they are used for in the body? Note: This is out of interest and is not part of my school work Cheers, Ryan Jones

There are other ways I think but from what I hear they are quite dangerous, Hydrogen Peroxide in high concentrations is explosive anyway. Heres one I found: Like it says DO NOT try it though... the results could be nasty is some organis peroxides are formed, its really not worth the risk A quck search of google returned some good results - here are a few I've looked at: http://www.sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?fid=5&tid=1325 http://old.4hv.org/index.php?board=6;action=display;threadid=22996 If all else fails you can buy Hydrogen peroxide at higher concentrations over the internet Cheers & good luck, Ryan Jones

I'd like to see an oxidation agent strong enough to be able to oxadise Helium and thus allow compounds of Helium to be made - does anyone happen to know if one does exist? I guess not ebcase there are no Helium compounds... Cheers, Ryan Jones

Thorium oxidation through an oxidated metal
RyanJ replied to sungmintd8's topic in Inorganic Chemistry
Isn't that dangerous (Vapour metal) does not seem like a nice thing to have arround Can a thermite reaction occur between a lot of things? I know Aluminium and Iron(III) Oxide react like this but are there others? Cheers, Ryan Jones -
True but don't they see in the end they are stopping peoples chances at surviving so now is that moral? Cheers, Ryan Jones

I'd say it took about 3 exposures to the bleach... it took that long to make the correct effect in the clothes Cheers, Ryan Jones

Do latex gloves stop Mercury from getting through?

Well then either this bleach was super concentrated or something was wrong with the clothes originally (Both I know are possible but were not the case). The clothes did start to rot (breackdown) and the clothes did become useless in a few days... Pieces were falling off them and the like. This only occured where the bleack came into contact with the clothes so if you can explain this then I'd like to hear it... maybe there was something in this bleack brand that did it but I don't know... Cheers, Ryan Jones

Well bleach can be quie damaging to organic materials... just put your hand in it and see... JOKING, do not do that Realy I'm not shure what it will do but I know that this stuff can be dangerous to organic materials. E.G. you bleach a cotton shirt and this shirt will then deteriorate and eventaully rot due to the bleach... Cheers, Ryan Jones
