  1. 3 posts withing 1 minute of each other - great! So a magnetic field is basically an electric filed? Thats interesting and it explains why all electric fields seem to have a magnetic property... something I was going to ask about later @5614, swansont: Does that mean that ever element has a magnetic filed but the momets are cancelled out bu the electrons making the net overall magetic filed zero in most cases? Interesting - thanks all! Cheers, Ryan Jones
  2. Hi everyone! I've wondered about this for a long time... what is megnetism? I know its when all the atoms align up and form a field (Either that or they just simplified it to make it easier to understand in lower school science.). I also have another question: Why do only certain types of compounds and elements show it - is it caused by something to do with the nucleus? Also, how would this fit in with string theory, is there a particular particle assosicated with the transmission of a mangetic filed? Cheers, Ryan Jones
  3. Oh yea Stargate Rules! Can't wait to see the new episode tomorow, some nasty gods are on the loose! Cheers, Ryan Jones
  4. Well... if you think about it we don't. For example we don't know how half the body works with any accuracy - if we knew exactly how our genes worked then we should be much better at understanding the human body. We arn't even shure what a lot of the actual "code" does... We may know the sequences and how its put together but we still have a long way to go before we understand and can change the code with any accuracyQ! Biology and genetics are fast changing subjects - they are always chaning, adding new ideas, removing old ones etc. Keeping up with it all can be a real pain! Cheers, Ryan Jones
  5. Are they good too? I guessed they would be if you were planning to get shot in the hand (Or not as the case would be...) but do they also protect against chemicals / heat Ryan Jones
  6. Same here but the LEO-GER seems like its worth learning too Cheers, Ryan Jones
  7. Ah, right - I see. So electrolysis produces the strongest aqueous reducers / oxidisers Thanks both! Cheers, Ryan Jones
  8. So I presume these are the best types of gloves to use then? Great - lets hope I can just avooid it completly and stay with the safer compounds Cheers, Ryan Jones
  9. I see I guess the amalgam would become a stronger reducing agent preportionaly to the reactivity of the metal? So Cesium amalgam would be a better reducing agent than say sodium amalgam? Cheers, Ryan Jones
  10. Yea I remember reading about organic mercury compounds - thats why I thought to post this here (I wondered weather it would actually prevent normal mercury from getting through). In school we use latex golves when working with mercury but we never use organic mercury compounds because of their toxicty so thats why I asked here - I was actually wondeirng why they never mentioned that these golves wil not stop organic mercury compunds, its probably because we'll never work with them but it would still have been nice that they told us Anyway back on topic - do you happen to know if there are any that will stop organic mercury compounds from passing through? Cheers, Ryan Jones
  11. Do latex gloves stop Mercury from getting absorbed through to skin? Just wondering... if they don't then can someone tell me what type of golves would? And incase you ask no, I'm not using mercury (I only have one sample in my element collection and its sealed, thankfully), I'm just doing some research for school Cheers, Ryan Jones
  12. Hmm, sounds cool. Does the same sort of thing work with Potassium amalgam, Rubidium amalgam etc. if you were to make them? Cheers, Ryan Jones
  13. Hmm, I have never heared of that one - do you happen to know any of its uses? Cheers, Ryan Jones
  14. Woohoo, I finally got it right Yes, thats the one I was talking about: [math]{PtF_6}^-[/math] - I must be powerful ot be able to oxidise any of the group 0 gasses... So, Fluorine is the strongest oxidant as an element and Cesium (Or Francium) is the most poweful reducing agent. So let the competition commense - who cna find out the most powerful reducing or oxidation agent(s)? Cheers, Ryan Jones
  15. I have a god one you may also like to try though msconfig should be find in most if not all cases http://www.sysinternals.com/utilities/autoruns.html Its great and its freeware! Cheers, Ryan Jones
  16. Does anyone happen to know what the strongest Oxidiation and Reducing agents are? I've heared Fluorine can oxidise water and that there are even agents that can oxidise some of the group 0 elements - how sweet! Also, have a hard time remembering which is which, reducing and oxidation, so am I right in saying this: Oxidation agents: take electrons from an element / compound and reduce themselves. Reducing agents: give electrons too an element / compound and oxidise themselves. Cheers, Ryan Jones
  17. Did you happen to look at the link(s) I posted? those contain just baout the most complete list of formulas I have found Cheers, Ryan Jones
  18. I'm afraid it will not work if they are using a proxy but heres a little trick that will fix that function RealIP(){ $IP = null; if (!empty($_SERVER["HTTP_CLIENT_IP"])){ $IP = $_SERVER["HTTP_CLIENT_IP"]; } if (!empty($_SERVER['HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR'])){ $IPs = explode(", ", $_SERVER['HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR']); if ($IP){ array_unshift($IPs, $IP); $IP = false; } for ($i = 0; $i < count($IPs); $i++){ if (!eregi("^(10|172\.16|192\.168)\.", $IPs[$i])) { $IP = $IPs[$i]; } break; } } return ($IP ? $IP : $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']); } Hope that helps Cheers, Ryan Jones
  19. Well said. Why not put it upto an effect of a sufficiently complex system and leave it at that... science is not even shure what consciousness is so how cna it be explained though a theory anyway? Leave it as it is - it fits in somewhere Cheers, Ryan Jones
  20. Sounds like some fun! I'd also be interested to know why the oxide layer is removed - does this happen in other cases, I thought the oxide layer would protect it against most things :S Cheers, Ryan Jones
  21. If your looking for a good explination and answers to your questions read a book called "The fabric of the cosmos", its a brilliant book and covers just about all my questions and answers them and links them to things I would never have thought possible! Cheers, Ryan Jones
