You are right too. In fact both 'analogies' don't even act as analogies. Neither offers any plausible mechanism to explain attraction. It appears that any such explanation cannot do without postulating some kind of mechanism to convert the spacial direction of repulsive forces, which seem simply explained by the 3rd Law (Action/reaction)

The speeds are so low that there is no relativistic correction worth doing either.

This is a very readable criticism of SRT. Einstein was such a kludger.

To try to understand motion and acceleration and measurement of speed, and how 'time' elapses in Special Relativity Theory (SRT), it really helps to first have a bit of a background in Newtonian Mechanics first. There are two reasons for this: (1) SRT reduces to Newtonian Mechanics for large relatively slow moving objects. (2) Many of the modified concepts required must first be learned in their unmodified forms through Newtonian Mechanics, to have a real understanding of what is going on. Essential Background In the real world, all ordinary measurements of an object's movement, velocity, and direction are done relative to some other object. This other object (the ground, the observer etc.) becomes the 'frame of reference' for all the measurements. A car or train is given a 'speed' relative to the ground, or a fixed radar trap. Anything not moving compared to this starting point is said to be in the same 'frame of reference'. The motion and direction of all these objects (trees, parked cars etc.) will be ZERO with respect to each other and the frame of reference we have chosen to measure from. Not All Frames of Reference are Equal Physicists would like all the laws of motion to take a standard form, a simple form, regardless of the 'frame of reference' chosen (A true case of Relativity of Motion). However, it turns out that this is not the case. There actually is a special set of reference frames in which the laws of motion are indeed simple: In Newtonian Mechanics, these turn out to be the Frame of Absolute Rest (relative to Absolute Space), and all frames moving at a constant speed in any direction relative to this same Frame of Absolute Rest. In all these frames of reference, the Laws of Motion turn out to be rather simple in form and easy to use. Appearance of Forces For instance, if we are travelling at a constant speed in a single absolute direction, then when we observe other (non-accelerating) objects in motion, they will appear to obey a simple set of laws that seem to support the Law of Conservation of Momentum. Objects which are NOT moving at constant speeds or directions from the observer's point of view (accelerating) will NOT appear to be following these laws, and so we assume that forces are acting upon them causing them to behave as if they had a life of their own. Preferred Frames We prefer the set of reference Frames which explains motion and forces in the simplest manner. If we try to make measurements and calculations of forces from a reference frame that is itself 'accelerating' relative to Absolute Rest or a frame of Constant Speed, all kinds of things seem to behave weirdly. We have to propose all kinds of 'phantom' forces to explain behaviour that would in another frame of reference appear simple and need no extra forces. Constant Speed versus Acceleration As it turns out, in BOTH theories, (Newtonian Mechanics and Special Relativity) you have preferred frames in which motion is more simply described, and other frames (accelerated frames) in which motion is complex and difficult to describe simply. Whats Special about Special Relativity? However, in SRT, you have an added level of complexity and diifficulty, since in this theory it is proposed that all objects will obey physical laws that resemble Maxwell's Equations for Electromagnetic Waves, modified by the Lorentz Transforms. Here, in some interpretations of SRT at least, time itself is not an 'absolute' dimension of a linear Cartesian type, but rather a 'local' variable that can only be measured and defined locally and relatively. In Einstein's original interpretation, time is said to be stretched or compressed as needed by the Lorentz Transform, and the object or particle experiences 'time' to slow down or speed up as necessary. Other Interpretations of SRT Other interpretations propose that it is only 'measured' time which is changed. That is, clocks slow down, (including atomic clocks and quantum interactions) but Proper Time itself remains a kind of involute dimensional frame. Since all time is measured locally and relatively, SRT merely predicts clock behaviour and mechanics under acceleration, rather than 'Time' distortion.

Not quite: Think about it: (1) In the boomerang case, you have gravity, air, 3-dimensionality, and spin all working miraculously through effects like precession, lift, and complex exchanges with time over a large volume of spacetime to get the 'lucky' effect pictured. Thus the analogy creates more questions than it solves, replacing a simple particle 'exchange' with a complex interaction requiring intermediary 'fields', extra time, and relatively large volumes of space as well as matter/energy to work against, in order to create the effect of a complex 'virtual machine' that can change the spacial direction of forces. (2) The boomerang case fails as an actual experiment, since real boomerangs can't be set up to do this. At best the trajectory will be a tilted parabolic shape, directing the energy sideways rather than reversing the direction of a simple ball toss between floating boats. That is, to exchange boomerangs, they have to be thrown at a right angle to the direction between the boats. While one might get 'lucky' in having a complex fluid motion of air that enables the successful toss (perhaps in the eye of a hurricane!) it is too strained an example. (3) Better would be the analogy of firing a bullet in the opposite direction, with enough force to circle the earth in an orbit, striking the man in the other boat from the opposite side, like the Bugs Bunny cartoon where he throws a baseball around the earth to prove it is round. Note that this idea while physically possible, requires the Earth nearby, acting as a conversion engine for the direction of the trajectory.

No. And no that is not the meaning of the superposition principle either. Everett's 'Many worlds' interpretation of QM was never popular or accepted. It is now discredited. Try the Transactional Interpretation of QM.

Thank you! There is no point in building a fusion bomb to destroy a city. The people you destroy would not be the enemy who attacked you. It is an immoral and ineffective way to stop a political party or military group. The enemy would not be deterred by the threat if they have already launched an attack. By simple logic, any paramilitary group willing to launch a WMD on any city will be in their own mind unreachable or irrelevant targets and not have enough concern for any other city to care if you make such a threat as a deterrant. "I have become destroyer of my own conscience and humanity." (what Oppenheimer should have said.)

Don't necessarily give up on a perpetual motion device: All you really have to do is keep it in motion perpetually, and you win! Examples of real perpetual motion devices: 5th planet from Sun (destroyed, but it would have been one). The Universe (Is anyone going to accuse God of failing to build one?)

Don't let Flyboy on the list. He knows a little German. (biblically?)

Was he born that way, or was there an accident?

purpose implies awareness. I know I am conscious, aware, and sentient. I assume you are too. Therefore there will be many purposes, some crossed.

How much for just the frame?

Interestingly, there does seem to be a difference between index.htm and, index.html, At least if you have two files in the directory/folder, either the server or the browser loads one and not the other. (I forget which). This can mess you up if you are just trying to upload a new version of your default page to a directory.

...and yet you neglected to deny your appearance in the video...
-
What about the pillary of bare-bum? Can we post a pic of Flyboy as the Disney version of Hunchback?

Sadly, I saw the entire video at Zoo-Beast.com. Although entertaining, I am glad I wasn't actually in the room. Once you've had Brazilian sex, you never come back...to mere humanity!

I agree. I posted comprehensive links to all possibilities however for the sake of others, and since we don't know what he has. I was the first to recommend he see a doctor (twice). If you think gargling salt-water is painful, rather than just about the only relief from a sore throat, you've never done it. Not only recommended by doctors, but others here have corrected you. Do a search and read the literature. By the way there are tons of nitrates in bacon and ham products. Cats and Pregnancy Warnings more warnings pregnant cat owners cats and eating meat Govt Health warnings again more warnings It was for historical background, to show that people weren't always this stupid. Where to begin? People *do* get infections from oral sex. End of story. Strep is easily passed from person to person in close contact, from not washing hands, food prep etc.. What is your point? There isn't one worth noting. 'resources'? The only quote I gave came from the last link I posted. Read it. ---------------------------------------------------------- Thank you! I am glad someone has a clue. I felt important medical facts overrode decorum in this case. Exactly. Thank you again for providing corroboration on this. Thanks again! This is scientific fact. Yes. And thanks again for confirmation of scientific fact.--------------------------------------------------------- Yes, sadly, 'normal', or rather common in North America due to piss-poor eating habits and bad hygene. 'Normal'? Only for meat-eaters. Would you want to kiss one in this condition, and share the benefits? ....(blech.)60% of teenage girls smoke. Is that normal? Or is it just another ripoff, victimizing a vulnerable group by taking advantage of ignorance using high pressure sales tactics?

This has the appearance of reasonableness. Vegetables are the best source for Everything However, there is nothing in meat you can't get in a better, more potent, fresher, more easily absorbed and safer form through a vegetable/fruit/grain diet. On the other hand, there are plenty of critical vitamins and essential oils and minerals which you don't get an adequate amount of on a high-meat diet. So as an argument against being a vegetarian, its a flop. While a change of diet can be a bit of an adventure, changing to a vegetarian diet does no harm. You cannot say the same thing in the reverse direction. In this case, he is already sick, so improving his diet can only help. 90% of Food Poisoning is from Meat Note also that most cases of food poisoning, including toxins (seafoods, including 5000 cases a year of poisoning for shellfish alone), botulism (chicken and beef), parasites (pork & wild-meat), deadly nerve diseases like Mad Cow (beef, pork, lamb) and heavy bacterial infections causing ulcers (hamburger) are directly because of MEAT diets. Other Cases of Food Poisoning Tracable to Meat The only time people get food poisoning from plants is due to mis-identification, contamination due to pesticide or herbicide sprays, failure to wash or cook foods, handling by dirty people who eat meat, and obviously contamination of vegetables by contact with surfaces and utensils used to prepare MEAT. This also has the look of good advice, however: (1) I never suggested he should *not* consult a doctor. (2) What matters with medical advice is not the *source*, but whether the facts can be corroborated by independant information sources, like the library, health centres, and services. Better advice would be: Consult as many sources as possible, and sources which are as up-to-date and reliable as possible. (3) Doctors are not always available, either in an emergency or for economic reasons, or location. (4) Doctors are not always reliable sources for information. In fact studies show that doctors tend not to properly inform patients and resent giving accurate and reliable advice concerning *causes* of illness, avoiding criticisms of patient's lifestyles, and sticking to treatment of symptoms. (5) In actual medical practice, nurses are more informed, more aware, better trained, and have more experience in recognizing and treating illnesses and prescribing medication than doctors, and make less mistakes.

I just spent four hours designing one, and now I notice you were being sarcastic. My bad. I guess this battery that runs on garbage is also a dumb idea.

Exactly! ...I mean... I also would defend the right of Severian to promulgate his radical scientific notions, even if many a good Mormon or Scientologist found his faith shattered, and he was forced to seek spiritual guidance with some sexual cult instead. Regarding MetaFrizzics as a dangerous 'nutter', he could in fact be 'unarmed'. He contracted elephantiasis once, but I believe those things may have been removed...

You have an infection of the tonsils. That is what they are supposed to do, your lymphatic system is drawing poisons and bacteria/viruses to a central spot where your body can kill them. You DO need your tonsils. Although it has been practise in the past to remove the tonsils, this weakens your immune system by giving you one less set of such glands with which to defend your body. In this case, you only have three more pairs besides those, your adnoids, the pair of glands in the front of your neck (where most people get mumps) and two in the back of your neck. These organs protect your head and neck area from infections, which is the most vulnerable place in your body normally. You need to gargle salt (at least a tablespoon in hot water) regularly several times a day. This will prevent more infections and reduce inflammation of the tonsils, relieving pain. Next you could go on antibiotics. I strongly suggest you don't let anyone remove your tonsils. Finally, you need to address the reason why you have a chronic throat infection: You are probably a meat-eater. You should stop eating meat. You probably don't practise safe hygene, which involves gargling with a germ-killing mouthwash like listerine for at least two minutes several times a day. If you have filthy pets, like dogs or cats in your home, you need to get rid of them, or you will keep getting re-infected from the germs these dirty animals have. You need to understand some basics here. Every farmer knows that every animal has a unique ideal diet. And if you stray from that diet, the animal gets sick and eventually dies. The farther you stray from an ideal diet, the more quickly you become sick and weak, and the more illnesses you will suffer. Human beings are no different! Man has an ideal diet, consisting of vegetables, fruits, and grains, legumes, potatoes, nuts, peas, corn etc. If you replace these essential things with other things, like meat, you will become sick, and eventually die. As well, such (non-)'foods' act as vectors for disease, like 'mad-cow' disease, and parasites. While in North America manufacturers of 'meat' products are supposed to have parasites and diseases under control, this is largely a myth. Impregnating pork and bacon for instance with heavy doses of NITRITES is supposed to kill parasites like trichonosis. The cure is worse than the disease, since nitrites are strong carcenogens, and result in body cancers, including stomach, intestinal, and prostate. Don't eat meat, and don't eat pork, and especially don't eat bacon. Don't eat animal fat at all. Actually, man's ideal diet was known from ancient times, but emergency situations, such as drought or famine, or seasonal lack of food sources has resulted in man having to 'break' the food laws for survival purposes temporarily again and again. In the bible the food laws were a requirement for holiness and health. Some examples are of course Samson, who kept a Nazarite vow of holiness which excluded all drugs and strong drinks (alcoholic beverages) as well, and Daniel, who refused the Emperor of Iraq's 'meat' and proved that eating only vegetables was a superior diet. Other dangerous practises that people do to cause throat infections are pat animals without washing hands and prepare food afterwards, or allow animals to lick and kiss them. As well, swapping spit (by kissing) with other people who don't understand hygene or keep the food laws will also make you vulnerable to the same diseases unclean people have. I don't want to mention it, but for completeness I must since it is a medical issue: engaging in oral sex with persons who have urinary infections (many North Americans do), or kissing someone's anus, these will very likely lead to serious throat infections, like "THRUSH" and/or tonsilitis of various kinds. I will also mention the practise of eating one's own sperm or drinking urine. These will also give you severe throat infections. The only way to engage in these practices 'safely' would be to practise them at least with a person who was 'clean' in the first place, that is, a person who was a vegetarian themselves and practised meticulous hygene and stayed away from dirty people or animals. THRUSH infection Tonsilitis Yeast Infections Kissing Infections STREP THROAT Possible Symptoms of Strep Throat / Streptococcus Symptoms of strep throat include fever of over 101 degrees; sudden and severe sore throat pain without coughing or sneezing; pus or white spots on either or both the tonsils; swollen lymph nodes; and swollen tonsils. Strep throat does not occur with cold-like symptoms, such as coughing, runny nose, sneezing and stuffiness. Strep is concentrated in the throat only. If a rash appears over the body in addition to strep throat symptoms, scarlet fever is likely. Allergies, Infection, Diet Possible Lifestyle Changes for Strep Throat / Streptococcus The best way to prevent strep throat is to avoid contact with anyone who has the illness. Wash hands frequently when around people with cold or flu symptoms, and do not share toothbrushes or eating utensils with anyone who may be infected. Get plenty of sleep, eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise to enhance general good health. If strep throat is suspected, see a doctor as soon as possible. If given antibiotics, be sure to take all of the doses to ensure the bacteria does not return. Drink extra fluids, take over-the-counter pain relievers and get plenty of sleep. Avoid close contact with others during the illness.

I have a theory I call the IQ Equivalence Principle: Briefly stated, Stupidity = Entropy. This is an identity, and so as a consequence, every activity increases the net stupidity of the Universe, in both closed or open systems. - my Special Theory of Equivalence Principle (STEP) Some say I have already proven it! Error = motion x (clumsiness)^2 [math]E = mc^2 [/math] No counter-example has yet been found. ...or is he?

I guess I wouldn't say the case is black and white. Presumably on a Physics Forum we are mainly discussing physics. I suppose if there really is a problem then a person's actions could be discussed. At least that would be better than labelling the person. (i.e., remind someone of guidelines, as opposed to attacking them directly and branding them.) Actually I probably agree with this. The difference is, he is proposing to judge others on some standard (his own?), whereas I am not suggesting we brand anyone without establishing an ethical foundation first at the very least. In some sense I am 'judging': judging that a 'Hall of Shame' would be a bad idea. In places of employment and schools, such activity has led to emotional attacks by disgruntled employees and horrific incidents of juvenile violent crime. The internet is not a 'safe' place to engage in an UNSAFE and stupid practice. Quite right. But my point relies rather not on the technicality of 'branding', but in merit of praise over criticism and attack. My original point should have made clear that people are put down ten times as often as they are encouraged, and this has a horrific cost upon us all.

Newton's Sphere Theorem: Review & Analysis
MetaFrizzics replied to MetaFrizzics's topic in Classical Physics
If people enjoyed this thread, I could continue with an analysis of the Centre of Mass, and tie them all together.
