  1. The human body is composed of 65% Oxygen and only 18% Carbon. Other essential elements are: Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Calcium, Phosphoros, Potassium, Sodium, Magnesium, Copper and alike metals, etc. They probably asked why Carbon because Carbon is most easily found and it can bond up to 4 bonds.
  2. dang it I need to learn how to post stuff. =(
  3. BAD: hydrochoric acid, concentrated NaOCl (bleach!!), ammonia, hexane/toulene. butyl seleno-mercaptan from SKUNKS and man-made ethyl mercaptan are equally horrible. But in my opinion, nothing beats METHANE(g), especially when it has just escaped a human, hahahaha. =) GOOD: umm, can't think of one right now. But
  4. Thanks, silkworm!
  5. Go to ODU! http://www.odu.edu ODU admission is tough on GPA, so you're well off in that department. As long as you get >2200 on SAT you should be in, too. We have a GREAT Chemistry & Biochemistry department. =)
  6. Not with the eternal question of nature vs. nurture, again! I say to hell with it. Gay people are cool and we should just accept them instead of trying to analyze how they came about. Nobody ever asks YOU stupid questions like, "was it nature or nurture that you became such a bastard?" Yah, if you're a bastard, you just are. No explanations needed. Likewise for gays/lesbians. They just are. So live with it!!
  7. My name BeYeu05...=) Did I mention that I cannot speak English? Repeat! My name IS BeYeu05...=)
  8. It's all about the C-H's, baby. I'm pretty sure hydrocarbons make up about 60% of our body.
  9. Or, as my professor would say call it, "BULLLLLLLLLLSHITTTT!!!" =D
  10. You have a 5-Carbon chain, so the base would be penta- Double C=C bond gets first priority, so there are dienes at 1,4 There is a ketone at Carbon 3 , so we have 3-one There is an ester (??!!). We'll call it 1,5-oxy. And finally, there is a methyl on carbon #5. So it should be: 4-hydroxy-5-methyl-1,5-oxy-3(penta-1,4-dieneone).
  11. Biochemistry is, in short, a study of the chemistry of life. Anything to do with the biotic world and all the cool-chems which are involved - that's our specialty. Are you thinking of going beyond Biochemistry? To say...medical school? Then bravo for you, because Biochemistry is the PERFECT major for pre-med undergraduate. Forget Biology, Chemistry, double majoring, etc. Just go Biochem and you're in for a smooth ride. I mean...IF you find it enjoyable like the rest of us nerds. =)
  12. Bluenoise may have been a little mistaken there with the word "respire". If that alone means gas exchange, then we are fine. But if you meant actual respiration, you'd need a mitochondria, which plants don't have. Plants simply exchange gas during photosynthesis. Breathing is a complete different story.
  13. I Scholar Googled "DNA Sequencing" and landed upon the following page: http://users.rcn.com/jkimball.ma.ultranet/BiologyPages/D/DNAsequencing.html
  14. Question: How much of each compound is needed to make 0.5 g of 80%/20% (mole %) mixture of cinnamic acid and urea acid? So far, I have the molar mass of individual compound: cinnamic acid =148.16 g urea = 60.062 g i tried to do 80% of 0.5 g which gave 0.4 g of cinnamic acid, but i am sure that is wrong because the % is not mass/weight % but rather MOLE%, which i do not know how to do. please help?
