Have you experienced something science could not explain?
dr.syntax replied to John Phoenix's topic in Speculations
from you. Your opinion means nothing other than that to me anymore. Why can you not allow other people to discuss anyting without some wiseass response unless they are one of your suck up buddies of course ? ...ds Merged post follows: Consecutive posts merged insult me? Up until now I have resisted responding in the same manner. Stick that Refsmmat where the sun don`t shine old salt along with your folksy wittisisms. ..ds Merged post follows: Consecutive posts mergedSECTION. So why some of these know it all so called scientists see fit to read these postings just to ridicule them says a lot to me as to what sort of people they are. Some of these names have become familiar to me. They appear to have an insatiable need to belittle others. Why else would they seek out this section of the forum of all places to offer up thier smarmy replies to the postings offered here ? ...Dr.Syntax -
Well as far as antivirals go,BHT: butylated hydroxytoluene, ranks on top in my opinion. Much has been written about it. It certainly does not cost much. As you no doubt know, few if any antibiotics work against viral infections. Read the literature and make what you will of it. ...Dr.Syntax

I think it`s a great question. I would go back to a month or so before I was born. I would do so to make sure my birth went right. I was born Caesarian under extreme duress to my mother and me. And from then on I would avoid all the harmful to myself decisions I made and take advantage of all the missed opprotunities and such. Things like that. ...Dr.Syntax

The gaseous alkanes and many of the liquid ones such as gasoline, kerosine and such readily combine with oxygen and under the right conditions explosively. It is very dangerous to expose such alkanes to an ignition source other than those systems such as a furnace, automoble engine, gas stove, etc., designed to utilize them safely. Always use caution when handling these highly flammable compounds. ...ds

Have you experienced something science could not explain?
dr.syntax replied to John Phoenix's topic in Speculations
Hello John Phoenix, I recall this incident where I had been returning from work for 2 or 3 days and my girlfriend at that time kept telling me about how she had looked in a full length mirror in our bedroom and at times would see this other woman there. This frightened and upset her. I never discounted it outright, but thought she might be having some sort of hallucinations. Anyway, we both got up and were eating cornflakes or something like that for breakfast as I was getting ready to go work. The amazing thing was that this regular sized bowl we were using as a sugar bowl that was at least a half full of sugar began moving about the table in a rapid manner. Changing directions in all sorts of ways. Reversing directions, turning at rght angles, going in circles. I was a bit amazed. I wiped the table to ensure it was dry. These movements were always some cosiderable distance. A foot or more at a time and rapid. There were no subways or trains or any other source of vibrations. Also, it was only the sugar bowl that moved. Not the bowl I was eating from, the spoons or anything else on the table. She said something to the effect of: see, I told you there was a ghost in the apartment. I saw no reason to argue with her and went off to work. I always remembered that incident and have never come up with any scientific reason for it. I am not a religious person nor was she. I don`t know what to make of it to this day. ...Dr.Syntax -

There is always a certain amount of uncertainty regarding the effectiveness of any vaccine. Many diseases are capable of rapid mutation and adaptation. Adaptation to survive the anti-bodies produced by the vaccine for instance. Also, many people can be carriers of a disease but have been born with the neccessary defense mechanisms to prevent the disease from expressing itself in those people. They still carry the disease and therefore can infect other people including vaccinated people. Vaccinations do not contain the complete DNA/RNA structures of the disease where as the carrier does with possible portions of which can have evolved a resistance to a vaccine. That`s as much as I can come up with at this time. ...Dr.Syntax

Risks of eating raw Alaskan wild-caught Keta salmon?
dr.syntax replied to Green Xenon's topic in Microbiology and Immunology
Well, if you actually believe anyone could know what new and old microrganisms exist out there and where the fish were caught,by whom and if they were properly refrigerated and such go ahead and eat them raw. You have a lot more faith in humanity than I do. Do you really believe people anymore. Oh yes, the FDA is making sure all is A-OK as to food and such. Have a good life, I REALLY hope you do, ...ds -
That is why I no longer eat animals. ...ds

Risks of eating raw Alaskan wild-caught Keta salmon?
dr.syntax replied to Green Xenon's topic in Microbiology and Immunology
Who could possibly know with any certainty ? Why not think in terms of protecting yourself from such risks. If you are going to eat it cook it first. ...ds -
I agree with much of what you said. Caring for and helping each other has real benefits for our species and others. Wolves, lions, bison, prairie dogs, certain birds, beavers, baboons and so many others form co-operative behaviors that help in the survival of thier species. But unlike those species, our technology now allows for the survival of those with severely debilitating traits that under the usual conditions of natural selection would never reproduce. ...ds

In my opinion, our gene pool is being degraded. Many unwholesome genes are entering the gene pool and getting passed on. Your understanding of the fundementals of natural selection are correct in my opinion. No amount of rationalization is going to change that. Natural selection simply does not care about any of us people or any other organism. One of those facts of life in this indifferent Universe. That does not mean that I don`t care or am indfferent to the suffering of others. I do care and help others when I feel like it. ...Dr.Syntax

Does our brain work like a CPU?
dr.syntax replied to cameron marical's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
In my opinion it is important to discuss the hypothalamus and thalamus when considering how the brain functions. These two structures are anatomically and functionally directly linked together. These structures have sensory and motor functions. Almost all sensory input enters these structures. Much like a switchboard these organs decide which information to send and where to send it for further processing. They are connected to the cortex where much of our conscious thought processing occurs and also to lower brain structures that control vital functions and midbrain structures that are more involved with emotions. So, at least in my opinion, the brain structure most like the Cental Processing Unit of a computer is the hypothalamus/thalamus. Thier fucntions are so closely connected and dependant upon each other I choose not to seperate them for this discussion. They are seperate sections of the brain. For detailed discussions of brain function they need to be considered and discussed as seperate sections of the brain and there are many seperate and important aspects of each that warrant such discussion. The hypothalamus is mostly involved in maintaining vital functions and the thalamus is more involved in recieving and routing information throughout the brain to maintain those vital functions in conjunction with and the help of the hypothalamus. ...Dr.Syntax -

physical pain is a signal from the source of the pain that damage has/is occuring and the normal response is quickly move the injured body part away from the source of the pain. An example would be jerking one`s hand away from a hot stove if you unknowingly placed it on the hot stove. ...ds

Are Poincare and Lorentz the originators of relativity...
dr.syntax replied to dr.syntax's topic in The Lounge
NO mention of Poincare. Maxwell-Hertz were probably dead and gone. Lorentz he had to mention. By the way Einstein got his equatios wrong about 5 or 6 times over many years regarding that 1905 paper. See http://discovermagazine.com/2008/sep/01-einstein.s-23-biggest-mistakes regarding that. It is a very short read. ...ds Merged post follows: Consecutive posts mergedHere is that link listing Einstein`s 23 biggest mistakes. By the way 7 of them are his attempts to correct those eloquent equations leading to E=mc2.The 7th of which was in 1946,41 years after the great paper was published. Anyway here it is : http://discovermagazine.com/2008/sep/01-einstein.s-23-biggest-mistakes . Take Care,...Dr.Syntax Merged post follows: Consecutive posts merged Merged post follows: Consecutive posts mergedSo according to you both of these people arrived at the correct complex equation through lucky mistakes ? It took Einstein 41 years to get his supposedly eloquent equations to actually derive E=MC2. Explain that one. 7 different attempts and failures by the great one. He was using thier equation but could not figure out how to derive it. Whatever, ...ds -

23 serious scientific blunders to be found at: http://discovermagazine.com/2008/sep/01-einstein.s-23-biggest-mistakes . Tolver and DePretto`s works were rejected by some here because of thier belief in the old aether concept. Somehow or other everything they were correct about such as E=mc2 was invalidated because they were mistaken about this aether concept. More importantly Einstein rejected quantum mechanics from 1927 until his death. I have had it with you smug selfrighteous so called scientists. I spoke ill of the allmighty Einstein. The man was anything but an admirable person in spite of what you were taught in Sunday school. ...ds -
Are Poincare and Lorentz the originators of relativity...
dr.syntax replied to dr.syntax's topic in The Lounge
proposition is to provide reliable references to the history of this issue. Statements by people who were alive and involved at that time. People who knew the people involved and corresponded with them. The historical record from the different academic institutions. That`s why I posted it in the GENERAL section of the forum. It has to do with science in a historical way. I`m not attempting to present some theory or new scientific inovation. I guess that link was a good one as to making my point with good references and such. Now you want me to contrive some sort of scientific theory and apply the scientific method and such. You don`t get the answers you want so change the rules. Whatever, ...Dr.Syntax- 37 replies

Are Poincare and Lorentz the originators of relativity...
dr.syntax replied to dr.syntax's topic in The Lounge
S.T.Preston and Olinto DePresto, both of whom had derived E=mc2 and had published works stating such prior to Einstein. Tolver did so using English units of measure which worked out as E=mc2 before Einstein was even born. DePresto used E=mc2 exactly and about 2 years prior to Einstein. He actually published his work a second time about 1 year prior to Einstein. How hard does a guy have to try to get some deserved respect. There are quite a few other notable contrbuters from that era. -
Are Poincare and Lorentz the originators of relativity...
dr.syntax replied to dr.syntax's topic in The Lounge
He mentions Maxwell-Hertz and Lorentz. There is no mention of Poincare. None. There are a few others who deserved to be referenced. I do not know thier names off the top of my head. Maybe some of you who do can help me out here. Anyway, the omission of Poincare is inexcusable. ...ds PS Two others are S.Tolver Preston and Olinto DePresto both of who deduced E=mc2 prior to Einstein. Tolver did so using English units that were the equivilant before Einstein was ever born and DePresto 2 years prior using E=mc2. There are others who warranted creditation.- 37 replies

Are Poincare and Lorentz the originators of relativity...
dr.syntax replied to dr.syntax's topic in The Lounge
who have influenced ,helped with, previously stated principles and such you present before the scientific community for consideration. In his 1907 paper, Einstein spelled out his views on plagarism : " It appears to me that it is the nature of the business that what follows has already been partly solved by other authors. Despite that fact, since the issues of concern are here addressed from a new point of view, I am entitled to leave out a thoroughly pendantic survey of the literature. " Imagine how you might feel if work you had published a few years back was completely ignored and credit for years of hard work on your part was somehow attribitted to some upstart who decided it was unnecessary and pedantic for him to credit predecessors in current and cutting edge scientific thought and discovery. People such as Henri Poincare who is now the acknowledged originator of: the Theory of Special Relativity by me and and many others. How would would you feel if someone managed to steal credit for some great idea you worked out and had published and such ? Also, you discredit S.Tolver Preston and others for something about the ether. Why are you so willing to overlook Einstein`s 30 years of stubborn resistance to quantum mechanics ? All the physics greats of that era were working out the different aspects of quantum mechanics and THE GREAT ONE stubborningly resisted for over 30 years of amazing advances in that important field of physics. Answer that one . ... Dr.Syntax -
