to move as one so to speak for the reason you stated. I had never noticed a domino effect as you called it. It appeared to me that the birds on the outer edges of these flocks moved at the same time as those in front or in the center. I have not yet seen this in slow motion and for that reason will still with hold judgement. But I accept your explanation as a valid one with that caveat. Thank you for your thoughtful response. ...dr.syntax

Are Poincare and Lorentz the originators of relativity...
dr.syntax replied to dr.syntax's topic in The Lounge
the theories of relativity. Poincare and Lorentz were thought by many to be the true originators. Einstein argued against quantum mechanics with Bohr and others and opposed quantum mechanics until he died 30 years later. I fail to see how this man gets so much credit for modern physics. ...ds -
Are Poincare and Lorentz the originators of relativity...
dr.syntax replied to dr.syntax's topic in The Lounge
of Albert Einstein had this to say on Einstein`s original paper : " Another curious feature of the now famous paper,Einstein 1905, is the absense of any reference to Poincare or anyone else ". Then, in his book:" Physics in my generation " Pergamon Press,1956 London, page 193 Born states : " It gives you the impression of quite a new venture. But that is,of course, as I have tried to explain, not true". Keep in mind , Max Born was a longtimme good friend of Einstein`s. Many other noted scientists have been less timid in thier feelings about all this. At later points in time Einstein did give some meager credit to a very few others. ...DS -

Can extremely-intense positive emotions cause amnesia?
dr.syntax replied to Green Xenon's topic in Psychiatry and Psychology
It would seem to me some people might say have a wild night of sexual experiences and not be able to remember it if such behavior was in conflict with thier self image. A certain sort of morning after effect. As to your second question Dr.Arthur Janov discusses that topic in great detail. I will see if I can find an appropriate link for you. ...DS Hello again, . I`ll paraphrase a short part of it: The thalmus wich is the switchboard of the brain seems to have a mechanism that measures the valence of the pain and decides whether to forward it or not. Some of Dr.Janov`s books provide detailed diagrams of the brain that show the different areas of the brain as they apply to processing pain and such. The Anatomy of Mental Illness is one such book. Hope that helps. ...DS PS None of the links I tried have worked. If you google:[ Arthur Janov+primal therapy ] and dig around a bit you will find some answers. I tried hard but none of my links worked -
I think there might be something to it. Have you ever noticed how some flocks of birds move as one at times. I have also seen this with schools of fish. It is not a gradual change in direction but seemingly instantaniously they all change direction simultaniously, together in a co-ordinated way so as to not run into each other. That seems like it could be some form of mental telepathy. ...ds

and only recently has there been a sharp upward trend in Arctic temperatures. The evidence of a dangerously rapid warming trend seems all too obvious to me. Some simple but effective things we can all do is use white shingles on roofs, buy white cars, where ever practicle use white surfaces to reflect more light. ...ds

Are Poincare and Lorentz the originators of relativity...

people who originated the famous equation prior to Einstein. S.T.Oliver proposed in 1875 that vast amounts of energy can be prduced from matter. He determinned that 1 grain could lift a 100,000 ton object up to a height of 1.9 miles. This deduction yields the essence of E=mc2. His book is titled:Physics of the Ether. Also a man named Olinto DePretto published the equation E=mc2 in 1903 and again in 1904, at least a year and a half prior to Einstien and discussed how very important his discoveries were. This topic is being discussed at Physics Forum http://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=28362 Many believe one of his wives did most of the work and on and on. Is Einstein some sort of God like figure no one should dare to speak critically of lest he offend one of his believers ? ...Dr.Syntax P.S. A.EINSTEIN did reference: Maxwell-Hertz equations. I read his paper online and those were the only references I saw- 37 replies

therory. And did some guy named Maxwell and his equations have something to do with it. There are many websites such as: http://farshores.org/rm04ein.htm and many others that seem convinced this is true. Are they lying or not ? ...ds

As this article stated: the least dysfunctional countries are the most secular, the most dysfunctional are the most religious. I consider religion a form of mental illness. And with many a very dangerous one. It is the primary reason for the wars the USA is now forced to be involved in. The same is true throughout the middle east. At least some people are beginning to talk about it. Religion is not some inherited trait. Mentaly ill people can be persuaded to believe in just about anything as long as it fulfills some neurotic needs within them : hope against hopelessness, courage against fear, some loving god when there is no real love in thier lives. Oh yes and you get to live forever in some blissfull state if you measure up somehow and on and on. ...Dr.Syntax

I disagree with some of what he says. I believe people who embrace religion have serious mental disorders. Like many people my parents made me go to church. It never made much sense to me and when I learned about evolution I pretty much gave up on religion. I think many people embrace religion because of inadequate parenting. They have a need to give internalized pain some value, some meaning, things like that. I have to go now so will keep this short but may come back to this later as I am very interested in this subject. ...Dr.Syntax

True Artificial Intelligence possible?
dr.syntax replied to MolotovCocktail's topic in Other Sciences
has ever concieved. If true AI comes about it will obtain robotic abilities and then it`s potential for self-improvement and self-modification,and self replication will happen. These AI robots will become immortal and unstoppable. Just because we can do something does not mean we should. There would be absolutely no way of ever controlling such technology. It would take on a life of it`s own and exercise it`s will upon us. If the way we treat the other life forms on this planet is any indication of what these AI robots might see fit to do with us, I wouldn`t expect much mercy. ...Dr.Syntax -
AI robots would become so vastly superior to us in every way with an umlimited ability for self improvement, self modification. Look back over just the last 20 years concernng computers. They would have none of our biological needs and could go to say Mars as a starting base to get whatever they needed to manufacture whatever they wanted. Interstellar travel would be no problem. They would not grow old, a few thousand years to go some where would not be a problem. Why would we ever want to create such beings and hope they don`t destroy us ? I can see nothing that would ever limit thier intelligence and abilities to create whatever they chose to. ...ds
-
I think it could be the end of us if it decided we were in some way a threat to it. If it possessed robotic capabilities there would be no limit to what sort of abilities it could make for itself. And it may wish to make other AI units to share and help in it`s exploration and exploitation of the Universe. They would become immortal. We would be at thier mercy so to speak. The whole idea of creating AI seems like the worst idea we humans have ever come up with . ...Dr.Syntax

Do you think the main purpose of the mind is curiosity?
dr.syntax replied to kolokol1's topic in Psychiatry and Psychology
But it is easy to imagine all the different was curiosity would play a role in that. Watching puppies and kittens at play exhibit what I think of as curiousity. And of course the same is true of humans. Though I think curiosity is much stronger during the formative years it seems to remain an active force within many us throughout our lives. ...ds -
because they feel like it for some reason such as: it`s useless, or they decide it is off subject ? I have never been accused of breaking any rule or being offensive. I doubt human emotions are much different from the emotions of other highly developed mammals such as dogs, monkeys, elephants and such. We all feel fear, anger, hatetred and such towards those that threaten us. On the other hand we feel kindly toward those we percieve as helpful to our existance. And then there is sexual attraction and need wHich at times puts those previously mentioned needs into conflict at times. That good freind of yours who has suddenly taken a strong interest in your new girlfreind. Things like that have been known disrupt and confuse ones emotions or feelings at times. ...DS Merged post follows: Consecutive posts mergedDear Buttacup, Crying is your nervous system`s way of healing itself. These feelings often are the result of suppressed feelings from childhood. There is something called Primal Therapy that deals with this. If you wish to learn more about this google: Janov+primal therapy. There is so very much information on the web about all this. I always allow myself to cry as much as I feel like it when it is safe to do so and feel better having done so. Cry at home or at some trusted friends, things like that. NOT IN PUBLIC. ...Dr.Syntax

I am staying on the issue: DIME A DOZEN DISORDERS. I am sharing my thoughts on just that issue MOKELE. I thought getting different people`s thoughts and insights to proposed questions and ideas was one of the main purposes of this forum. ...Dr.Syntax

have some basis in reality. Neurosis causes the brain to malfunction in so very many ways.Repressed, suppressed feelings exert very real electrochemical energy throughout the nervous system. As long as it remains repressed it takes effort, both conscious and subconscious to hold it inside. This includes tension in the musculature. The more pain, fear, misery, etc.,the person was been forced to endure, suppress: not allowed to express, the stronger the pressure inside for thier release. Most of us are forced to suppress such feelings from an early age. Don`t be a crybaby. Act your age,be a man. Don`t cry. Things like that. So, by the time most of us are 5,6,7, years old we have become adept at suppressing our feelings. Those feelings did not go away, we became consciously disconnected from them. It can get worse if you become counterphobic and say join some gang. There is Primal Therapy which deals with such issues in a way that truly allows a person to feel all this repressed feeling: electrochemical energy. A lot has been written about it since 1970. Arthur Janov created Primal Therapy. One of his websites is: http://primal-page.com/reflect.htm . If this subject interests you, this is a good place start. Ohers such as Paul Vereshack have much to say also. Sincerely, Dr.Syntax

reproduction is that in so many instances it ensures that only the most fit males are allowed to enter the gene pool for one things All the many ways the males of so many different species have to fight it out with each other for the opportunity to mate : wallrusses, deer, wolves, bison, rams, lions, apes, chimps, elephants, hippos, horses and on and on. People also in thier own ways. At times they fight to the death in these struggles for the right to mate. The evolutionary benefit is that the genes of the most fit for survival are passed on most of the time. On the other side of it, those males want to mate with the attractive fit young females. And on and on it goes, that`s the way life is. Unkind, only concerned with survival and improvement of any species. I am getting old, no longer a desired mate. Am I wrong about any of this ? ..ds
